Marcos State University Graduate School, October 2015. AVAILABILITY AND EXTENT
OF USE OF PHYSICS LABORATORY ROOM, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OF
SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ILOCOS NORTE.
Adviser: Dr. Vida V. Antonio

This study primarily aimed to assess the availability and extent of use of Physics laboratory

room, materials and equipment of selected secondary schools in Ilocos Norte. This study made use

of the descriptive design in order to assess the availability and extent of use Physics laboratory

room, materials and equipment in selected secondary schools of Ilocos Norte. The researchers

employed the stratified random sampling technique wherein they endeavored to proportionally

represent the population by getting respondents from the selected secondary schools offering

Special Science Class and Regular Class. A researcher-prepared questionnaire internally validated

by Science teachers was used in order to gather data. The materials and equipment were classified

according to what division of Physics they belong namely: Mechanics, Optics, Electromagnetism,

Modern Physics and Thermodynamics. Data gathered in the study were analyzed using frequency

distribution and percentage to describe the availability and extent of use of Physics laboratory

room, materials and equipment.

There is an allotted room but there is no separate room for laboratory and lecture in Physics.

It turned out to be a classroom due to the dearth of classrooms in certain schools. Likewise, Physics

teacher manages the Physics laboratory room. In addition, most of the schools, especially the

custodian of the Physics laboratory room, do not have an annual inventory of the materials and

equipment. The result revealed that most schools do not have annual procurement plan for

materials and equipment needed for Physics laboratory. The result also showed that most of the
selected secondary schools have a conducive Physics laboratory room. Likewise, most of the

teachers in charge of the Physics laboratory room did not attend seminars or trainings regarding

managing Physics laboratory room, materials and equipment. Furthermore, the results showed that

the number of materials and equipment for mechanics has the highest percentage index of

availability followed by electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics and the least modern physics.

It is further recommended by the researchers to have an adequate provision of laboratory

materials, equipment and facilities. The secondary schools should be provided with standard

laboratory in which improvised and other concrete materials and equipment could be stored for

the purpose of Physics teaching. Non-governmental organizations should take interest and bold

steps in enhancing the quality of school science laboratories. International donor organizations to

assist in equipping school science laboratories. Inspections should be routinely carried out on

schools laboratories and worn out equipment replaced with new ones.

High priority should be placed on good management techniques of the science laboratories

in order to appraise the technology of science instruction in the schools which enables us to develop

within the limits of our human and material resources, a system that enhances understanding,

thinking, production and problem solving. Teachers should be taught on how to improvise on

certain laboratory materials as well as help the schools to discover ways of improvising the

laboratory equipment from locally and available materials. Teachers should be encouraged to

attend regular workshops and seminars on improvisation and laboratory techniques.

It is therefore recommended that the study be carried out on other science subjects such as

biology, chemistry and earth science in order to know the problems associated with teaching the

subjects with the view to improving the students academic achievement.
