Andrew Sprang
Superintendent
It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone.
Then I took a step back to look at all that was accomplished and I wanted to take some time to share.
Over the course of the year I received numerous compliments on the appearance of our buildings. Our custodial and maintenance staff do an excellent job
keeping things clean and getting things set up for events. Many guests who visited this year commented to me just how surprising it is that the buildings are as old
as they are with the way they have been maintained.
Here are some numbers that simply surprised me with the total number. Each day we transported an average of 845 students to 13 buildings in 5 cities
averaging 1064 miles (186,200 miles for the year). We also transported students an extra 24,000 miles for field trips and athletic competitions. This is through high
wind, heavy rain, snow, fog, whatever else mother -nature wants to throw at us. Student safety is always at the forefront for all our drivers each and every day.
This year our food service department served over 291,000 meals to our students. They also support the summer rec program and summer school, which
allows our students to get meals over the summer. Another accomplishment for this group is forming a partnership with Wesley pre-school to provide lunch for
their students. What a great way to demonstrate the commitment to community!
We all know that the true leaders of our district are our secretarial staff. Without these individuals we would never know when we are supposed to be where,
who is needing to meet with us, and just wants to talk because they are upset about something. They also demonstrate compassion for the playground bumps and
bruises along with the belly aches.
In the classroom we saw many accomplishments for our students and our staff. Probably the best way to approach this is to start at the beginning and work up.
At all of our elementary buildings the Leader in Me way of life has truly taken hold. Our students, at an early age, are able to define a purpose for their education,
their lives, and their future. How powerful is that? Our district was the showcase for Ohio as all three elementary buildings were selected (out of 5) as sites
for fellow educators and school staff to visit as part of the Empowering Leadership and Student Success Summit that was organized by Franklin Covey at Tiffin
University. Longfellow staff presented a breakout session at the conference. It is time to recognize that there is interest in Fostoria because great things truly do
happen here. At the Intermediate building we can celebrate the students and staff receiving the Momentum Award for receiving all As on the Local Report Card
in the area of Value-Added. For those of you who may not understand value-added I am going to summarize that it is having students grow an equivalent of one
year for one years worth of instruction. What many do not know is in order to get an A in the various categories you have to achieve almost two years worth of
growth with these students! At the JSHS the Class of 2017 is the largest graduating class in recent history. We also had students in our DECA program qualify for
national competition. We saw improvements in all athletic teams this year. Our band went on the road and performed in the Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago, as
well as more recently being invited to perform at Cedar Point for the Lions Club State Convention. Redmen Pride was truly on display across the Midwest this past
year. At our Junior High Awards night we saw almost 40% of our students at the 7th and 8th grade level earn academic honors for earning a GPA of over 3.0.
The 2017-18 school year, I am sure, will present a number of unique opportunities. The Leader in Me program is going into year three at all of the elementary
buildings. There will also be an expansion into LEAD at the JSHS as this building will start its journey towards becoming a Lighthouse school.
The building project will become more visible as construction will begin later this summer. New social studies materials will be delivered to the district, and our
curriculum focus will shift to science for the next school year.
Enjoy your summer and the many adventures and opportunities it will bring! The first day of the 2017-2018 school year is August 21st. See you then!

Riley and Longfellow Come Together for Field Day:

Each year, Riley students and staff come to Longfellow for a
joint field day experience. Mr. Haupert, physical education teacher
for both Riley and Longfellow, plans developmentally appropriate
activities for students pk-2 which focus on gross motor skills, team
work and most importantly, fun. For the past two years, staff from
each building participated in a tug-o-war challenge. Longfellow
pulled for a victory for the 2nd year in a row! A travelling trophy
was awarded to the winner.

The Class of 2029

The kindergarten class showcased their talents for friends, family and teachers on May 18,
2017. A slide show and video presentation were shown before students sang and danced
under the direction of Music Teacher, David Roth. Afterwards, families were invited to visit
with their classroom teacher and have ice cream in the high school cafeteria.

Parents, community members and teachers from all over northwest were able to witness
the greatness at Longfellow over 3 different days in May. Students modeled the 7 Habits and
exhibited their talents as visitors spent time in classrooms. Area schools who are interested
in investing the the Leader in Me came to see the process in action while learning about the
possibilities of infusing leadership into everyday school life.

on our Circle of Control. We all worry about things that we have
zero-control over, like the many changes in our lives.
From the Desk of Mrs. Bernal Summer brings needed rest from worries after a busy school year.
It is hard to believe the 2016-2017 school year is now behind us! Thank you for all of your support So, try to Be Mindful this summer. Being mindful is to pay attention,

Getting Ready for Summer

~The ABCs of Improved Reading ~

Access to books. Its critical that kids have access to a wide variety
of books over the summer months, but we know that access alone
doesnt make a strong impact. Books that match readers ability levels
and interests. For young peoples reading skills to improve, they
need to read books that align with their own reading levels. Reading
books that are too easy or too hard wont help! Comprehension,
as monitored and guided by an adult, teacher or parent. The most
important piece to making summer reading effective is the help of
an adult who can ask questions and guide kids to better understand
what they are reading. With these three ingredients, your summer
reading program will soar! - The National Educational Association
Parents we have had a great school year and the students have
made a lot of growth. Help your child this summer by reading or
getting involved in a program at the local library. Please call 419-
435-2813 to register your child for the Kaubisch Library summer
reading program.

by. Each year I am humbled by the opportunities I continue to be
blessed with as I witness the growth and achievements of the
students of Fostoria each and every one amazing in their own
way!

For me, the years end always brings with it a mix of emotions.
The strongest this year is a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
As I reflect upon the year, I am overwhelmed with pride in
all that the staff and students of Fostoria Intermediate have
accomplished. From Family Nights, Spelling Bees, Classroom
Presentations, and Action Teams to Leadership Days, State
Testing, & Year End Awards our students have been involved
in an extraordinary number of activities. Of course, we cannot
forget the tremendous amount of growth and learning that has
taken place during the year. Throughout all of these activities
our students and staff have demonstrated great leadership and
continue to make FIES proud!

On behalf of the FIES staff, I would like to take this opportunity

to wish you all a safe and happy summer.
