B. INHALATION
1. Cough up as much sputum as possible
2. Shake the aerosol before use
3. Hold the aerosol as indicated in the manufacturers instruction (this is
usually upside down)
4. Exhale slowly, emptying the lungs as much air as possible
5. Place the lips, tightly around the mouthpiece
6. Take a deep breath though the mouth and at the same time squeeze
the bulb of the aerosol
7. Hold breath for 10 to 15 seconds at full inspiration
8. Exhale slowly through the nose

C. NOSE DROPS
1. Have paper tissue available.
2. Nasal passages should be cleared before nose drops are instilled.
3. Have patient tilt head over the side of the bed, or place a support
under neck so that it is hyperextended.
4. Insert dropper about 1/3 of an inch into the nares and instill the drops.
5. Avoid touching the external nares with the dropper since this may
cause sneezing
6. Instruct patient to maintain position for 1 to 2 minutes until the
medication is absorbed
7. Rinse the dropper with boilled water.

D. EYE DROPS
1. Instruct the patient to lie down or sit with head tilted back.
2. Have a separate paper tissue available for each eye.
3. Wipe the lids and eyelashes clean prior to instillation.
4. Draw only the amount of solution needed for administration into eye
dropper.
5. Hold the dropper close to the eye but do not touch eyelids or lashes
with the dropper so that the patient will not be startled
6. Expose the lower conjunctiva sac.
7. Allow the prescribed number of drops to fall into the center of the
exposed sac. Avoid having drops fall on cornea; this is unpleasant for
patient and may cause tissue damage.
8. Close eyes approximately 1 minute after instillation to let the
medication absorbed

E. EAR DROPS
1. Warm drops to body temperature.
2. Have the patient lie on side with the ear to be treated facing up.
3. For instillation in adults: pull the cartilaginous part of the pinna (the
external part of the ear) back and up. Point the dropper in the
direction of the eardrum, and allow the drops to fall in the direction
of the external canal
4. For installation of drops in children under 3 years of age, pull the
pinna back and down. Point the dropper in the direction of the
eardrum and allow the drops to fall on the external canal.
5. Have the patient remain on side for a few minutes after instillation to
allow medication to reach eardrum and be absorbed.

F. RECTAL ADMINISTRATION
1. Preparation :
As a rule, suppository should be refrigerated since it is soften at room
temperature.
2. Advise the patient to go to the toilet to empty his bowels if it is
necessary
3. Use gloves to protect the hand used for insertion (index finger for
adults, fourth finger for infants).
4. With help
Instruct the patient to lie on left side and to breathe through mouth to
relax the sphincter.
5. Remove any wrapping from the suppository
6. Gently insert the suppository beyond the internal sphincter
7. Have patient remain on side for 20 minutes after insertion of
suppository.
1. Without help
Wash hands before inserting the suppository
2. Remove any wrapping from the suppository
3. Either squat or lie on side with one leg straight and the other bent.
4. Gently but firmly push the suppository into the rectum. Push far
enough so that it does not slip out.
5. Close legs and sit still for a few minutes. Avoid emptying the bowels
for at least one hour, unless its a laxative.
6. Wash hands again
