Unit 57 LO3 Planning Booklet

You must show detailed evidence of your planning and research. Outline the
purpose of the brief you have chosen here:

Find two example of similar work and

explain their strengths and
weaknesses.

The first photographer that has inspired

me in what I want to create is Charlotte
Patmore a music photographer who is
known for building relationships with
those she works with and learning what
kind of aesthetic they like.
You can see how shes built relationships
with those she works with in her work as each
one of the photogs she produces reveal the
model/artists personality in a new way.
Its almost like she is telling you things about
them without using any words.
I think charlottes main strength is having that
level of closeness with her employers that she
reveals new parts of personality in each
photograph by knowing what they like
whereas a lot photographer in music
photography are employed to take very
generic well lit photographs that are
complementary but not necessarily anything
new or special.

The only weakness that I would say charlotte

has in her work is that you wouldnt really
understand the photos without context.
As she photographs bands and artists you
would have to be aware/listen to the artist she
is photographing to appreciate
and understand the
photograph.
The second photographer that
inspires my idea is Simon
Annand who wrote the book
The Half the half is a book of
photographs that are all taken
half an hour before a theatre
production goes live.
Annand captured each
actor/actress backstage as a
way of capturing the
preparation process that the performers go through and the vibe that is
created backstage of a production.

The only weakness I would say Annand features in his work is that his photos
generally lack context. If you were to see one of these photos without knowing the
aim of them or what they were representing, they wouldnt really look like
anything out of the ordinary its one once you have analysed and made yourself
educated on Annands vision and idea that you would understand the photos.

Outline your ideas for the brief including sketches and mind maps. Use your
work on applications and contexts to identify your client and audience.
In this project I really wanted to capture the not so generic in a lot of
photography in magazines and in generally society the only photos that are
captured of general beauty standards.
Not to say I am just capturing those who arent generally classed as beautiful but
those who have something different about them weather that is in what they wear
or the way they express themselves.

My plan was to go backstage similarly to Simon Annand before the show starts
and capture them getting ready but also similarly to charlotte Patmore aim to get
to know them and capture their personalities in the photographs.
At the end of the project I want it to be visible that I am trying to capture the
weird and the wonderful.

I dont think my clientele would have an age range as such more a mind-set.
I think this will appeal to a wide range of open-minded music lovers whom
embrace unique characters.

Consider potential constraints and contexts, e.g. is your idea effective,

realistic and achievable? You must get feedback from your classmates
and client e.g survey/focus group.
My plan is to go to the magic garden In Battersea to photography Smiling Ivy
when they play, I contacted the band and they said theyre more than happy for
me to tag along before during and after the show to take photographs. The only
restraint I may have is with transport so I will have to thoroughly plan out my
journey in order to make sure I get there on time.
A main constraint for me is time as I am working to a deadline and this shoot was
arrange very last minute.
Another would be my own lack of experience as this was my first ever music
photography shoot so I will ensure that I check my photos in the view finder as I go
along to see my progress.

Are there health and safety considerations? Provide a risk assessment.

Travelling in London can be dangerous so I will make sure I am prepared
when travelling and am aware of any possible dangers around me.
Being out late at night also bring caution so I will make sure I am with a
friend at all times and have my phone on me.
