PUP SYSTEM

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) is a government

educational institution governed by Republic Act Number 8292 known as the Higher
Education Modernization Act of 1997, and its Implementing Rules and Regulations
contained in the Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Circular No. 4,
series 1997. PUP is one of the country's highly competent educational institutions.
The PUP Community is composed of the Board of Regents, University Officials,
Administrative and Academic Personnel, Students, various Organizations, and the
Alumni.

PUP is a public, non-sectarian, non-profit institution of higher learning

primarily tasked with harnessing the tremendous human resources potential of the
nation by improving the physical, intellectual and material well-being of the individual
through higher occupational, technical and professional instruction and training in the
applied arts and sciences related to the fields of commerce, business administration,
and technology.

The University promotes applied research, advanced studies and progressive

leadership in the stated fields. We also offer ladder-type higher vocational, distance
learning (Open University system), technical and professional programs in the area
of business and distributive arts, education and the social sciences related to the
fields of commerce, business administration and other polytechnic areas.
Furthermore, the University takes steps to enrich the academic program in other
fields of study and adopts a polytechnic program of education designed to provide
the individual with employable skills and managerial know-how in order to make
them creative, productive and self-reliant.

PUP operates year-round with two semesters and a summer. Summer

sessions depend on the course and on the campus. The University employs 1,483
full-time and part-time faculty members with a few of the full-time faculty holding
administrative positions. There are 707 regular and casual administrative employees
who provide support services to the University population. The faculty spends two-
thirds of their time in teaching and one-third in research and extension activities.
One of the major functions of the University is research, a key component of
scholarship and teaching. During the years under review, PUP received and allotted
government and private funding to research.

With more than twenty campuses serving more than 70,000 students, the
Polytechnic University of the Philippines is the largest university in terms of student
population. The main campus is named after a national hero, Apolinario Mabini, and
is located in Sta. Mesa, Manila - in the middle of a busy metropolitan. But despite of
this, the environment within its perimeter is a place conducive of learning.

Majority of the students belong to the economically challenged level of

society. It is the University's commitment to give qualified and talented students
access to quality and responsive education to aid them in the achievement of their
dreams and improve their lives. Being a well-educated and skilled individual, they will
not only become job seekers but job creators as well, a force of knowledge workers
and entrepreneurs.

Scholars of the Nation (Iskolar ng Bayan), that is what we call our students
because the Philippine Government and other non-government institutions subsidize
their tuition and other fees. More than a hundred of the student populations are
foreigners from China, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Tanzania,
Nigeria, and Ghana. They are enrolled in business, language, statistics,
communication, and education courses in the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Students from Korea regularly visit PUP in summer to take up Intensive English
courses.

The commitment of its leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends has
formed the cornerstone of this University that has exceeded expectations with every
generation of the graduates it has produced since its establishment.

Today, PUP is relishing its successes and its students are enjoying
unprecedented academic opportunities, an enhanced campus environment,
upgraded colleges, state-of-the-art technology, and nationally and internationally
recognized programs. With the combined effort, PUP will continue to be a partner in
nation-building and in poverty alleviation for the marginalized sector of society with
quality, responsive, and relevant education as a tool.

RATIONALE OF OJT EXPERIENCE

On the Job Training (OJT) or practicum training is a method used for

broadening students skills and develops their productivity in the working area. It is a
learning opportunity for students to gain hands on experience through their exposure
to industry. This program provides opportunity for student to go through actual
methodologies of specific job using real tools, equipment and documents.

OJT are part of college curriculum that aims to train and orient students about
the work and their future career. It is very important not only to teach students their
chosen career but to show students the reality about working. It helps us show the
realities of working that maylead to a stable and fulfilling career.

The rationale of on the job training increases the skill and ability of the
students to perform specific tasks. Training develop and improve certain phases of
an individuals personality, discipline, behavior or knowledge to make a student more
effective on his job and more qualified for his future job.

According to Jones(2005), Students can consider their OJT experience as

their guide in their first days at work, especially if their ojt and current work are
related. They can use their experience and observation as an trainee to their current
job if they still have issues on adjustments. Having a good performance during
training is very important especially now that theres tight competition towards job
seekers and high qualification of companies.

The benefits of On the Job Training according to Williams (2004) Students

learn discipline, organization and people skills while they train out in the workforce.
Since the training is supervised by real employees in real life work situations,
anything can happen and students must learn on their own feet
II. Application

Experience when applying ojt

My experience when applying On The Job Training was not that easy. At first,
you would thought that it was easy to look for an ojt that the company you applied
would hire you easily but it wasnt. There were companies that would reject or ignore
of you. It was because I applied very late and there are companies that dont just
hire and have already enough ojt students. Since I applied late, I joined my
classmates in look for OJT in Maguyam, Silang, Cavite. Luckily, one of my
classmates has known the HR Assistant in Total Power box Solution Inc. and we
went to HR office to submit our resume, interviewed quickly and then accepted.
Finally we were hired. It was a relief that I was accepted that quickly and dont need
to search for but I was having doubts for accepting and continuing there because my
parents dont like the area since it was far from our home and it wasnt convenient for
me. I tried applying on other company but I wasnt accepted so I end up completing
all the requirements needed before I start working. I was like applying for a real job
because of the requirements I need to comply. The requirements for Total Power
box are:

-2pcs 2x2 and 1x1 ID picture

-NBI Clearance

-Police Clearance

-Barangay Clearance

-Copy of Grades

-Photocopy of NSO Birth Certificate

-SSS ID No.

-Medical Result from ON TOP Medical

-Recommendation or Endorsement letter

-Memorandum of Agreement
-Waiver Signed by School and Parents

Besides the requirements needed for Power box we also have requirements for ojt
needed by school to complete:

-Recommendation letter

-Resume

-Waiver

-Memorandum of Agreement

I completed all the requirements needed before I started my On the Job

DESCRIPTION OF DEPARTMENT

Human Resource Management is where the process of recruitment and

selecting employee, providing orientation and induction, training and development,
assessment of employee (performance of appraisal), providing compensation and
benefits, motivating, maintaining proper relations with employees and with trade
unions, maintaining employees safety, welfare and healthy measures in compliance
with labor laws of the land.

Human: refers to the skilled workforce in the organization.

Resource: refers to limited availability or scarceness.

Management: refers on how to optimize and make the best use of such limited and
a scarce resource so as to meet the ordination goals and objectives.

Altogether, human resource management is the process of proper and

maximize utilization of available limited skilled workforce. The core purpose of the
human resource management is to make efficient use of existing human resource in
the organization.

Every organizations desire is to have skilled and competent people to make

their organization more effective than their competitors. Humans are very important
assets for the organization rather than land and buildings, without employees no
activity in the organization can be done. Machines are meant to produce more goods
with good quality but they should get operated by the human only.

For any organization to function effectively, it must have resource of men

(Human Resource), money, materials and machinery. The resources by themselves
cannot fulfill the objectives of an organization, they need to be collected, coordinated
and utilized through human resources. And, the effective management of human
resources is also vital.

Hence, Human Resource Management (HRM) has emerged as a major

function in organizations. Human Resource Management is the organizational
function that deals with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring,
performance management, organization development, safety, wellness, benefits,
employee motivation, communication, administration, and training. It is the
administrative discipline of hiring and developing employees so that they become
more valuable to the organization.

Objectives of HRM

Societal objective-To be socially responsible to the needs and challenges of

society while minimizing the negative impact of such demands upon the
organization. The failure of organizations to use their resources for society's
benefit may result in restrictions. For example, societies may pass laws that
limit human resource decisions.
Organizational objective -To recognize that HRM exists to contribute to
organizational effectiveness. HRM is not an end in itself; it is only a means to
assist the organization with its primary objectives. Simply stated, the
department exists to serve the rest of the organization.
Functional objective-To maintain the department's contribution at a level
appropriate to the organisation's needs. Resources are wasted when HRM is
more or less sophisticated than the organisation demands. A department's
level of service must be appropriate for the organisation it serves.
Personal objective-To assist employees in achieving their personal goals, at
least insofar as these goals enhance the individual's contribution to the
organisation. Personal objectives of employees must be met if workers are to
be maintained, retained and motivated. Otherwise, employee performance
and satisfaction may decline, and employees may leave the organisation.

Nature of Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management involves management functions like planning,

organizing, directing and controlling. It involves procurement, development,
maintenance of human resource. It helps to achieve individual, organizational and
social objectives

Human Resource Management is a multidisciplinary subject. It includes the study of

management, psychology, communication, economics and sociology. It involves
team spirit and team work and it is a continuous process of learning.

V. LESSON LEARNED

PRINCIPLE APPLIED

5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five

Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke

Seiri means Sort is the first step in 5S, it refers to the sorting of the clutter
from the other items within the work area that are actually needed. This stage
requires the team to remove all items that clearly do not belong in the working
area and only leave those that are required for the processes in question.

Seiton means Straighten is the process of taking the required items that are
remaining after the removal of clutter and arranging them in an efficient
manner through the use of ergonomic principles and ensuring that every item
has a place and that everything is in its place.

Seiso means Sweep is the thorough cleaning of the area, tools, machines
and other equipment to ensure that everything is returned to a nearly new
status. This will ensure that any non-conformity stands out.

Seiketsu is the fourth step of the 5S method. It means "standardized

cleanup". It is the process of ensuring that what we have done within the first
three stages of 5S become standardized; that is we ensure that we have
common standards and ways of working.

Shitsuke is the fifth and final step of the 5S method. It means "sustain" or
"sustained discipline". It is a Japanese word that carries a wealth of cultural
meaning: Discipline and training imposed upon a person. Ensuring that the
company continue to continually improve using the previous stages of 5S,
maintain housekeeping, and conduct audits and so forth. 5S should become
part of the culture of the business and the responsibility of everyone in the
organization.
SKILLS DEVELOPED/ ENHANCE

I improve my communication skills when dealing with employees

matter every day.
I also improve my social skills and gain more confidence.
I increase my knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel because I often
use it in the office. I learned that it is essential to be good in it for it can
help you to make your work a lot easier.
I enhance my knowledge about production. My exposure in the
production plant helps me to learn more with the actual process and
system.

WORK ETHNICS

Integrity: I create trusting relationship with clients, co-workers and

supervisors.
Sense of Responsibility: I am more responsible for my job
performance and put my best effort and completes projects to the best
of my ability.
Emphasis on Quality: I am committed to do my best to produce great
work.
Discipline: I stay more focused on my goals and is determined to
complete my assign tasks.
Punctuality: I am more punctual and shows up on time.
Sense of Teamwork: I am able to work with co-workers with a high
sense of teamwork to meet our goal and deliver good quality of work.
There is a sense of respect and understanding that make
collaborations go smoother.
VI. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The problems I encountered is the safety of the employees. I observe

that inside the production the workers only wear their uniform t-shirts, casual
pants and safety shoes. They dont wear safety gloves or helmets.
Most of the employees are prone to accidents usually were minor accidents.
There were injured workers who went to the Hr office for first aid due to minor
cuts from sharp metal and falling objects.

I also observed that they encouraged overtime to employees and OJT

students which is not safe and healthy for them. Since the area is far from
commercial area and from their home.

I recommend that they should enhance the safeness of the production

plant. They should improve their proper attire like wearing safety gloves and
helmet to avoid injuries and improve their ventilation although there are fans it
is still hot inside. I think it is much more convenient if they add more fans.
They should not encourage OJT students to work overtime since it is not
counted in number of working hours they have completed.
