Standard Performance Indicator

There are five NETS-A Standards. In each standard the focus is used to guide instructional

technology practices. The first standard is visionary leadership. As stated from NETS-A, the first

indicator is that educational leaders facilitate the shared development by all stakeholders of a vision

for technology use and widely communicate that vision.

This is a very important standard. Without this standard, it would be difficult for the other

standards to follow suite. The other standards are digital age learning culture, excellence in

professional practice, systematic improvement, and digital citizenship.

I did my research at Pleasant Hill Elementary School. Pleasant Hill Elementary School

(PHES) is located in a rural area in Georgetown County. This school has a strong school-

community relations program. Communication with students, parents, faculty and staff, district

office, media has grown in tremendous ways through technology.

Methods of Understanding

The method I used to gain research for this standard was to look at the teachers pages, talk

with the teachers, and look at our school report card. Since I am working with some teachers this

summer at Pleasant Hill Elementary School, I was able to talk with them casually about what they

did this past school year in their classroom. Many teachers were using the same strategies with

their students this summer.

Every teacher in the school has their own school webpage. Every teachers webpage is

individualized to the needs in their classroom. Some options may include, but are not limited to,

general information, education, experience, contact information, assignments, links, and forms.

This website is available for the public to view.

Many teachers also use the Remind application to keep parents informed on what is

happening in their classrooms. In addition, the principal and some teachers have a podcast that

they add to their webpage. In the classroom, students have access to desktops, laptops, and

Chromebooks.

Educational leaders implement, maintain, and monitor systematic technology in their class.

There are two main technology programs used in school. Those two programs are Moby Max and

ALEKS. With those programs, students are given initial placement from diagnostic tests. Over the

period of the school year, the educational leader is able to monitor the progress of their students.

Moby Max is a program that targets math, reading, social studies, and science. ALEKS is a

program that focus on math skills.

Data/Evidences

At PHES, Moby Max is used in grades two through five. Some educational leaders use it

more in their classroom than others. One teacher in third grade particular used it in rotations with

her students since the beginning of the school year. She shared with me that at the beginning of

the program each child took the diagnostic test to place each child. Some students scores were in

second grade level still and others were placed at the beginning of the grade. The teacher monitored

their growth and worked individually and collectively with students to assist with moving students

to grade level.

A teacher in fourth grade used the ALEKS program with her students. She shared that the

program worked very similar to Moby Max; however, it only focuses on math. She shared with

me that many of her students mastered the fourth grade standards. In addition, she shared that five

of her students finished at the sixth grade level. Those students were taking lessons and mastering

sixth grade skills.

There were many advantages in both programs. The programs allowed individualized

learning and students were able to move at their own pace. The teacher was able to meet each

childs need by working with them individually. The weekly reports were able to be printed for

parents and students to view.

I believe our school is making great strides informing stakeholders on the importance of

implementing technology at home and at school. Our educational leaders are receiving more

training and resources to use technology in the classroom.
