Marks
Question 1 (13 marks)

The Solvay process is used to produce sodium carbonate.

a) Write an overall reaction for the Solvay process. 1

b) If 2.45 tonnes of sodium chloride are used, what is the theoretical 2
maximum yield of sodium carbonate?

c) Write TWO balanced chemical equations for the two reactions that occur 2
in the Solvay Tower.

d) Sodium carbonate is produced by heating sodium hydrogen carbonate. 3

Write a chemical equation showing this reaction and explain what effect
the removal of carbon dioxide would have on this equilibrium.

e) Discuss the environmental issues associated with the Solvay Process and 5
explain how these issues are addressed.

Question 2 (6 marks)

A chemical manufacturing company wants to build a new industrial plant to produce sodium
carbonate. The map shows three sites, labelled A, B and C, being considered for the location
of the industrial plants.

Assess the suitability of the three sites for locating the industrial plant and identify which site
is the most suitable for the location of a Solvay plant.
