Marbles , Minerals , The Parthenon Temple , The Ancient Greek Civilization and
the New Museum of Akropolis , Athens , Greece (Hellas)
Last year , Saturday , 31 May 2008 , the President of the Hellenic Republic inaugurated the magnificent
Museum of Marble Crafts at Pyrgos , Tinos Island , Aegean Sea , Greece.
In the Editorial of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS , Vol. 23 , No136 , July-August 2008 , on the
presentation of The Museum of Marble Crafts in Tinos Island , we had written , among others that There is
no doubt that the Ancient Greek Civilization , was , is and will be a pananthropic Civilization. The only
thing we wish to cite in the prologue of this issue is the contribution of the Marble in the creation of
Artworks - Symbols : A feeling of wonderment dominate to anyone facing the Parthenon Temple , the
Statue of Hermes of Praxitelis , the Statue of Aphrodite of Milos . Many modern buildings have been
built based on the Architecture of Ancient Greeks , while marble remains an inextricable constructional
material in many buildings today. The Marble , this blessed rock , which is a metamorphosed
limestone , is directly related with the most integrated Civilization of Humanity , the Ancient Greek
Civilization ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA - NEWS ON MINERALS give the chance to their readers in
Hellas and 25 Countries around the World to know on this Museum in the Center of the Hellenic
Territory. This Museum , in the blessed island of Tinos in the Aegean Sea , an island with tradition in the
Art of Marble , will become known very soon all over the World and it will become a universal Marble
Museum , as Universal was and is the Ancient Greek Civilization which belongs to all the Humanity.
We always should keep in mind that the Marble is an unbreakable piece of this Pananthropic
Ancient Greek Civilization .
-One year later , another magnificent Museum was completed and inaugurated on Saturday , 20 June
2009 by the President of the Hellenic Republic , the New Museum of Akropolis. Though huge , it is full of
Statues and art crafts made of marble , metals , terracotta pottery , while there is prediction to host in their
homeland , the numerous Marbles of Parthenon Temple , which were taken out of Greece. We talk about The
Elgin Marbles , marble sculptures from the Parthenon that were brought to Britain by the Earl of Elgin and now
are on display in the British Museum. Other also findings during Archaeological excavations are standing -by
to be on display in this Museum. - All these exhibits of the Ancient Greek Art are symbols and connected with
the Greek History which is lost in the antiquity.
- People say one photograph equals one thousand words ,so this article is essentially a photohistory showing
highlights from the New Museum of Akropolis based on a visit 2 days after the official opening ceremony of the
Museum. Wandering inside the Museum just by the Akropolis Hill and looking the Parthenon Temple you feel
you live in Ancient Greece. All you have to do is just to visit the New Museum of Akropolis and confirm one
more time how Marble and Metals can write History which has survived through the centuries and passed
from generation to generation till nowadays.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND HIS EXPEDITION FROM HELLAS TO THE LAND
OF LAPIS LAZULI
There is no need to make an introduction on the Alexander the Great. Numerous books and the History have recorded his
achievements. Alexander the Great during his expedition from Hellas to Far East , went through the land of Lazurite (Lapis
Lazuli) where now is the greater area of Afghanistan Pakistan and India.
Lazurite (Lapis Lazuli) is a rare mineral , found along with other mineral and is commonly called Lapis lazuli which is the
commercial name of the mineral lazurite. Lazurite is a complex sodium , calcium , aluminium silicate sulphate , in which part
of the silicon atoms (Si) are substituted for sulphur atoms (S) in the form of sulphur anions. The rich blue color is due to the
sulphur inherent in the structure of lazurite. It is usually described as having an intense blue to a gray - blue color. The
greater the amount of sulphur anions , the more intense is the blue color of lazurite. In its vivid dark blue variety the content
of sulphur reached 0,7 %.
- Small crystals of pyrite (FeS2) are always present in lapis and their presence distinguishes lapis from its similar in
appearance- mineral ,sodalite. Lazurite has been mined for centuries from the same location is mined today , in the
mountainous valley of Kokcha, Afghanistan. First mined about 6000 years ago and the rock was transported to Egypt and
later to Europe where it was used in jewellery and as paint pigment. Although now there are other sources of lapis , the
mine in Afghanistan still produces the finest quality material. For more than 4000 years , lazurite has been mined at Shar-
Shakh in Badakhshan , Afghanistan. Where is the mountainous valley of Kokcha ? Where are these lapis mines in
Afghanistan ? Where the Alexander the Great started his eastward expedition and how far did he got there ? Lazurite mines
in Afghanistan are located near the Russian borders and Tajikistan.
- The route to the mines by horseback leads east from Balkh by Kunduz (in the Kunduz river valley) into the
Badakhshan, south up to Kokcha river past Faizabad to the mine-site. This was the only ancient source of lapis Lazuli ,
high up in the valley of Kokcha river in the Hindu Kush mountains. In ancient Seistan (adjacent to the mines) fragments of
Lapis lazuli seem to have been used as currency exchange. The lapis miners classified the qualities of lapis from finest to
lower qualities: Neeli , or indigo color ; asmani , or light blue color ; and finally susvi or green color. It is said that the richest
colored lapis was found in the darkest rocks and near the river , the purest stones were found. Lapis was exported all the
way to Egypt. This mine was the source of all Egyptian Lapis , according to Egyptians. No other source was known in the
ancient world. It was not easy to carry Lapis to Egypt at that time. The Egyptians loved lapis .They used it in jewellery and
art work. They used to buy it from a town known as Tefrer. Tefrer has been identified by Egyptiologists as the Ancient city of
Sippar in Mesopotamia. The lapis sold at Sippar came from Baktria where the Afghanistan mines occurred. It was shipped
all the way downstream the estuary of river Indus and then to the estuaries of Tigris and Euphrates rivers and then upriver
stream to Sippar. The boats lapis was loaded might had been the ancient Mesopotamian wooden barges which were
buoyed up by dozens of inflated goatskins. The other routes from Baktria were all overland loaded on donkeys over
mountains and across deserts. Among other historical data it is reported that West Punjab was named as the Country of
Yonana (Yonana=Yonan=Yunan=Ionia=Land of Ancient Greece in Asia Minor) , because in the time of Menander , the

Hellenized Members of the local aristocracy and the descendants of the Greekmacedonian men of Alexander the Great
were the ruling members of the slave owing society. The high Society used the Greek language. According to testimony of
Philostratos , the King of Taxila spoke Greek fluently.
- As Strabon states , the message of Indus King Por to the Roman Emperor Augustus (27 BC 14 AD) was written in
Greek. Some scholars hold that Greek was fostered as a living dialect at the Court of the Saka Rulers in NW area ,what is
called today Pakistan.
-When someone enters the Hellenic Territory by airplane he/she will be impressed by the blue and white colors of the
landscape , blue sky , lovely blue waters and light , abundant of light due to the Sun. It is not random that the Hellenic Flag
has two colors , the Royal Deep blue color and the white.
- The only natural rock having the deep blue color of the Hellenic Flag is Lazurite. Another mineral , Azurite -
Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 - has also a deep blue color ,as well as some other blue minerals , but from practical point of view
azurite cannot been cut and polished in big tiles enough to make handicrafts.
- One of the main historical interesting things of Chitral Valley in Northwest Frontier of Pakistan and Afghanistan is the
Kalash Valley , the home of Kafir-Kalash Tribe or the Wearers of the Black Robes.
- The legend says that five soldiers of the legions of the Alexander the Great settled in Chitral and these soldiers are the
progenitors of the Kafir-Kalash. -It is worth to mention that the Hellenic Daily Newspaper APOGEVMATINI , No 15946 ,
page 7 , Tuesday 28 January 2003 issue , reported that the Great Seal of the Bank of Afghanistan stamped in new
currency notes of 2 and 50 Afghani (the new official currency Notes after the Taliban period) has a synthesis of two horns of
Amaltheia in the base where coins coming out the horns and two warriors of the Alexander the Great , while there is in
Greek the phrase or possibly . It is known
that Amaltheia (in Greek : ), was a goat in the Mountain of Ide (Idi) in Kriti Island (or Crete Island) which gave her
milk to Nymphes Adrasteia and Ide (Idi) in order to feed the God Zeus. The horn of Amaltheia is the symbol of wealth and
prosperity. Eukratides was Greek King of Baktriani (2nd century BC) who took over the dynasty of Eufthydemos A , Greek
King of Baktriani. Eukratides fighted against Sogdians , Arahots and Indians and installed a special currency system in
the area , while Eufthydemos had created a powerful Kingdom with the support of native people there . This was the
reason why the Bank of Afghanistan honoring Eukratides printed his name in 2 and 50 Afghani Notes.

LAPIDARY JOURNAL 1983 , . 1779 -1780.
-On the occasion of the presentation on the New Museum of Akropolis with marble-mainly-exhibits of the
Ancient Greek Civilization , our article on the MARBLES OF GREECE is cited below. This article had been published
in the LAPIDARY JOURNAL , January 1983 issue , p. 1779-1780)

SOME NOTES ON THE MARBLES OF GREECE

By D.G.Minatidis , 70 Queen Sophia Avenue , Piraeus T.T.6 , Greece

- In an article entitled Greek Geostamps and Philamineral Items , which appeared in the October 1982 issue of
the Lapidary Journal, there was a stamp depicting Greek Marbles which represent one of the main Greek Exports.
Now I would like to say something more on the Greek Marbles. There are more than 80 varieties of Greek
Marbles on the market and if we include travertine and alabaster varieties , we have a variety of 90 plus
raw materials for building and ornamental purposes. Probably some of you visiting Greece or shows on stones
will have come across some kinds of Greek Marbles. The story of some of the marble quarries is lost in the
antiquity. Many varieties of Greek marbles come from the same deposits where the Ancient Greeks used marbles to
build famous temples such as the Parthenon (in the Acropolis of Athens) , the Temple of Neptune at Cape Sounion ,
Delphi and numerous others. They also built theaters throughout Greece. Greek marbles were used as raw material
for sculpture ; statues such as the Aphrodite of Milos (now in the Louvre Museum , Paris , France) and the
Hermes of Praxitelis are made of Greek marbles. The marble of Paros is extremely white and is deeply penetrated
by light. It is this light penetration which gives a magnificent look to the statues of Aphrodite and Hermes. The
Ancient Greeks used mostly white or semi-white marbles , mainly from Dionyssos, an extremely beautiful suburb
north of Athens, Penteli and the islands of Paros and Thassos. Beside the active marble quarries in Greece , there
are many ancient abandoned quarries where one can see traces of work done by the Ancient Greeks. Even tools
have been found in some of them. In quite a few places the marble deposits currently mined are extensions of the
ancient deposits. To return to our days ,as I mentioned before , more than 80 varieties of Greek marbles exists on
the market. New deposits are discovered from time to time. The experience of visiting a marble quarry in Greece
is very enjoyable , because apart from collecting all kinds of marbles , you may find traces and even tools , if you
are lucky, of ancient times. In many marble localities in Greece where the rocks have not suffered extensive
metamorphism you may find different fossils (ammonites and others). The Romans used mainly the marble of the
island of Skyros which is white or semiwhite marble with reddish brown irregular patterns. On Tinos Island you can
find the famous green marble verde antico. The columns in the Catholic Church of St. Dionyssos in Athens are
made of this green marble.
- A classification of the greek marbles would consist of : white ; white-semi-white ; black; gray ; beige-cream;
red; green; other colors ; travertine and onyx-alabaster. Among the white-semi-white we have : white Dionyssos-
Penteli ; white Penteli ; white-semi-white Verria ; white-semi-white Tranovaltos Kozani ; white Lava Kozani ;
white-semi-white Drama area ; white Thassos (crystalline); white Limnia Kavala ; white Paggaion Kavala; white-
semi-white Nikissiani Kavala ; white-semi-white Naxos (crystalline) ; white-semi-white Serres ; white-semiwhite
Parnon ; white-semiwhite Ikaria ; semi-white Argalasti Volos and semi-white Kanalia Volos. Among the black
marbles , there are : black Vytina ; black St. Petros Parnon ; black Tripolis ; black Mikrothebes ; black Levadia ;
black Farsala ; black Volos ; black Melissochori Thessaloniki ; black Grevena ; black Taxiarches Drama ; black
Dragasia Kozani ; black Valtetsiniko Gortynia ; black Kilkis; and black Kastoria. The gray marbles include : gray
Aliveri Euboia ; gray Distos ; gray Kissabos ; gray Asteroussia Iraklion and gray Santa Marina Marathon. The beige-
cream marbles consist of : beige Ioannina (in different varieties); beige Rhodos ; beige Iria Nafplion ; beige
Dombraine ; beige Dragasia Kozani ; beige Karnazeika Argolida ; beige Aliartos ; beige Agia , Larissa ; beige Driopi ;
beige Ligourio and beige Mykaenes. Red marbles include : red Amarynthos Euboia ; red Eretria ; red Epidavros ;
red Ermioni ; red Thebes ; red Chios ; red Cantia Argolida ; red Santa Galini Kriti; red Aliartos; red Edessa ; red
Kozani and red Santa Thessaloniki. Among the green marbles , there are green Naoussa ; green Cipollino (Porto-
Lafia , Nea Styra , Euboia); green Tinos (verde antico) ; green Nesson Larissa ; green Fytia Verroia.
- Other colors include , brown Troizinia ; rose Candia ; beige-red Mykaenes ; brown-gray Pyrgos Orhomenos and
many others. Some good quality travertine include Porous-stone Korinthos ; travertine Aridea ; Alfastone , Kriti.
The onyx-alabaster (white-brown) of Kriti Island is extensively used for decorative ornaments.
- Every two years there is a show in Thessaloniki , Greece, which is called MARMIN (from the initials of the words
mar-ble and min-eral). The show is entirely devoted to the marble business in Greece. In this show (and there are
numerous similar shows in the rest of Europe) , the visitor has the chance to see what is new in Greece and in
Southeast Europe. Beside the marbles (domestic and imported) , all kinds of machinery involved in the marble
industry from Greece and abroad are on display. News ideas and new varieties of marbles come to light during this
show. Some of the greek marbles, and I will mention as an example the cipollina in Porto Lafia , exhibit all kinds of
folds (inclined , recumbent etc) and fractures in macro and micro scale. Students in Structural Geology would find
a rock formation designed from Nature for them. Passing by the marble factories near Nea Styra , the visitor can
see cut blocks of cipollino exhibiting these structures all along their side surface.
Washstands , bookstands, statues , tables , ashtrays , building overcoat and others are some of the uses of the
Greek Marbles. The use of the raw material depends only on the creative ability of the people to enlarge the
spectrum of uses of the marbles.

The word marble - in Greek (marmaro) comes from the Ancient Greek word
(shine , sparkle , flash). Beside Natural marble we have also artificial marble where marble dust can be
combined with cement or synthetic resins to make reconstituted or cultured marble. What is marble ?
Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from regional metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks,
either limestone or dolomite rock, or metamorphism of older marble .If the original limestone is pure
then the derived marble is white. Marbles in some areas (e.g. Afghanistan , Pakistan , Vietnam and
elsewhere can host super crystals of ruby , spinel , pagasite , lazurite and other minerals)

MOLDAVITES (Natural glass)

By
Anthony de Goutire GG
#7, 4771 Cordova Bay Road, Victoria BC , V8Y 2J7 , Canada .Tel. 250 658 8566 -Email: pen.ton@shaw.ca
(Introductory note by the Editor of ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS)

Note by the Editor : There are many kinds of tektites such as australites (in Australia) , Indochinites
(in Southeast Asia) , Chinites (China) , Ivorites (in Ivory Coast , Africa) , Georgiaites (in USA , Georgia) .
The tektites found in Czech Republic in Europe are known as Moldavites as they are located in central
Bohemia traversed by the Moldau river. Tektites from Egypt and Libya are called Libyan glass, have
a yellow to yellow-green color , weigh up to 5 kilos and are considered as gem rough material suitable
for faceting stones. Tektites is the scientific name of these stones , while the other names are
baptized with names of the areas they were found.
The name Tektites comes from the Greek word (smelt , melt) and are considered to be natural
glass rocks up to a few centimeters in size possibly formed by the impact (hence impactites) of large
meteorites on Earth's surface. Tektites are typically black or olive-green, and their shape varies from
rounded to irregular . Moldavites are green and have irregular shape . It is worth to mention some
physical and technical characteristics of tektites: Color : green , brown-green, black-green , olive
green, black ; sometimes yellow , white; rarely multicolored Diaphaneity : transparent to opaque
Luster: glossy Fracture : conchoidal Cleavage : none , Hardness : 5,5 6,5, brittle Streak : white
specific gravity : 2,21-2,96 Refractive index : N -1,470-1,540 Birefringence: none Dispersion: none
Pleochroism: none Luminescence : none Chemistry : trace amounts of Al , Fe , Ca , Na , K , Mg , Ti
Special features : distinct fluid texture , craterlike surface pitting , fluid and gaseous inclusions
Treatment : surface often etched in dilute acids.

Moldavites especially are believed to be particles that were thrown into the atmosphere by a massive
meteorite impact in south western Germany about fourteen million years ago. These particles, called
tektites, were scattered in what are known as strewn fields in southern formerly Czechoslovakia ( now
Czech Republic and Slovakia) , and are named after Moldavia where they were first found.
Tektites are found in strewn fields in various parts of the world but the Moldavites are found only in
formerly Czechoslovakia and some parts of Austria.
Moldavites are characterized by their olive green colour and intricate shapes with very sharp points
protruding in all directions. Fig. 1 & 7. . The more delicately shaped pieces are often mounted in
jewellery. Moldavites are also cut and facetted in various shapes and sizes. Fig 2.
- The larger of the two facetted gemstones in Fig. 2 has some very interesting inclusions in the form of
numerous gas bubbles and tendril-like inclusions called lechatelirites or schlieren. Figs 3. 4. & 5. The
lechatelirites are composed of a hard silica quartz.
Moldavite is highly stressed and, under crossed polarizers and a 1st order red compensating filter,
interference colours are displayed. The interference colours become attractive back drops for the
inclusions, add interest to the smaller facetted gem, Fig.6, and the mountain scenes, Figs. 8 & 9. The
mountain scenes were taken from the specimen in Fig. 7.
Moldavite specimens are readily available on various websites but beware of low prices because there
are imitations out there. Also look for pieces that havent been damaged.

100 %.
As can be seen in the above photographs , the energy pillow is separated in 16 chambers ,each one of
which contains quartz tumbled crystals . The cloth is 100% cotton.
-
.
Mineralogy in cooperation with Textile Industry has created pillows and blankets with tourmaline.

What makes tourmaline products good for health ? When tourmaline is in motion ,i.e. when undergoes
pressure or change in temperature due to its piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties , it releases negative
ions which are considered as the vitamin of the air. The topic is extensive and there are many Users
Testimonials on improvement of their health while they used tourmaline products.
Testimonial on the piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties of tourmaline is the following example : When
you look at the display of mineral specimens in a rock shop , you will notice that tourmaline crystals have
more dust covering its crystal .This is explicable because variation in temperature within 24 hours a day ,
results in development of pyroelectricity in tourmaline crystals and hence attract the dust particles of the air,
as dust particles are electrically charged particles.
Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. . They are created in nature as air
molecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation, and moving air and water.
Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain
environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are
believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to
alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.
ourmaline sheets or tourmaline pillows helps to improve blood circulation when seated for long hours ,
e.g. Bank Employees , Personnel working many hours with P/C , Drivers etc
