INTRODUCTION

Plastics are considered as one of the breakthroughs which has remarkably been useful in
our daily lives. But the utilization of plastic has been increasing these days. Until now, plastic
has become one of the problems of Environment because of the wrong habit of using and
disposing it properly and its time for everyone to think about this in the present scenario. Since
Plastic is a non-decomposable material, the necessity for recycling or reusing it, is also
increasing thereby reducing its wastage. Utilizing this Plastic waste for a positive purpose assists
in reducing its effect on environment also.

Stabilization was coined as to make anything in a stable condition which itself is a

challenging task. Various researches are going on for incorporating the waste to the soil and
stabilizing it so that it can be utilized for different purposes. Thus, using plastic as stabilizer will
help in two ways, in addressing the problem of disposing the plastic waste and also using the
most available black cotton soils wherever possible.

Here, in this project, soil stabilization has been done with the help of randomly
distributed polypropylene fibers obtained from waste materials. The improvement in the shear
strength parameters has been stressed upon and comparative studies have been carried out using
different methods of shear resistance measurement.

River bank erosion is the single most common problem at river which flows on alluvial
plain although the plain usually exists at lowland area. The erosion causes a lot of damage. That
can be seen from existence of meandering symptom at the river. The erosion will result in the
loss of land, or property, thus endangering people who live near the river. Factors responsible for
erosion are climate, topography, soil, Landover, landuse and management practices. Preventing
or controlling soil erosion relies on selecting appropriate strategies for soil conservation, which
requires a thorough understanding of the process of erosion. Many strategies for erosion control
have been applied such as crop and vegetation management and soil management. However the
plant cover and the presence or absences of conservation measures influence very much the rate
of erosion.

Soil erosion not only reduces soil depth, but also reduces the capacities of soil such as
water holding capacity, and decreased plant nutrient. In the long term, soil productivity will be
decreased. Furthermore it can cause offsite effects including pollution in water, downstream
sediment in river bank and reservoirs. It is necessary to understand erosion and sedimentation
process for soil conservation planning.

Soil stabilisation means the improvement of stability or bearing capacity of the soil by the
use of controlled compaction, proportioning and/or the addition of suitable admixture or
stabilisers. Soil stabilisation using raw plastic bottles is an alternative method for the
improvement of sub grade soil of pavement. It can significantly enhance the properties of the soil
used in the construction of road infrastructure. Results include a better and longer lasting road
with increased loading capacity and reduced soil permeability.

The objective of this study is to improve

the characteristics at site and make soil
capable of carrying load and to increase the
shear strength by decrease the
compressibility of the soil.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to answer the following problems:

1. Will plastic bottles be an effective soil stabilizer?

2. Will the plastic bottles can improve the shear strength of the soil to prevent the erosion in
riverbanks?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study hopes to establish learning not only for the people of Brngy Maasim San Ildefonso
Bulacan but also in all bulakenyos.

BARANGGAY CAPTAIN/ BARANGGAY MAASIM. The ideas and information presented or

shown in this study may be used by the baranggay as a reference guide to them on how they can
recycle all the disposable plastic bottle and used as a stabilizer on their riverbanks.

STUDENTS. This study may help them on how they can help their community to lessen the
problem in the plastic bottles. it also can help them to innovate different ideas on how they can
use disposable bottles in different ways.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. this study can help them to innovate or to motivate them to improve
other ways on how to use or recycle disposable bottles (plastic) in more useful way.
