When we learned about the big
changes coming this summer to
U.S. Highway 1 in Tequesta, we
knew we had to learn more. This
major change eliminating two
of the six lanes will result in
slower traffic along almost two
miles from the county line south
to the bridge.
Slower traffic: Is this really what
we need? I learned the impor-
tance of driving the speed limit
through Tequesta back in 1994.
My wife was pregnant at the time
with my first daughter when we
were pulled over for speeding.
I remember telling the officer a
small untruth that we were rush-
ing to the doctors office, since
my wife was not feeling well.
The nice officer let us off with A
warning. Since then Ive been an
obedient driver in this area,
at least.
Not everyone had to learn this
way, but then again not everyone
needs to. This road is a major thoroughfare and the best alternative to Interstate 95, which is
seven miles west. To take a perfectly good road and funnel traffic to just a few lanes seems
like a bad idea.
Read Suzanne Wentleys article on the project on page 22. She spoke with the Tequesta
Mayor Abby Brennan to get the towns view on the project as well as hearing from some of
the locals. It will be interesting to see if the town can win residents, including me, over with
the new project.
In this issue, we also asked our neighbors to tell us of a mentor from when they were
younger. I enjoyed the emotional responses on page 9.
It got me thinking of my mentor: Mr. Roger Shapiro. He was the one responsible for inspiring
me to apply to college. He was my sophomore year homeroom teacher, and he caught me
skipping class the month before my graduation. He asked me, What are your plans for after
graduation? It made me do some deep thinking. My response to him was utterly lackluster,
and I knew I had to do better. He stayed persistent with me and helped guide me through the
application process. Im grateful for his interest in my future. I mean, look at where I am today
lying to police and speeding down U.S. Highway 1! Dont worry, Mr. Shapiro, Ill do better.
