Introduction

This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding

of construction and application from prior projects. Emphasis in producing related
manual construction drawing detail and specification. Technical knowledge is viewed
as something separate from design. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop
an awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between these two
areas of study. Critical success of any design project relies on a designers ability to
address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and
the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are
part of the design process. This assignment will enable you to develop and
demonstrate some knowledge of construction, materials and structural theory in a
small scale design project.

Objectives of Assignment

To develop an understanding of the structural elements in construction and its

application in the construction industry.
To apply suitable construction elements, material and detail/joint solutions
suitable for a specific design.
To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of
buildability.
To demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to
practical considerations.
To demonstrate certain levels of manual drawing and sketching skills.
To allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of
construction, material and technology.
To encourage students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing
relating to construction.

Learning Outcomes

Select suitable structural elements for the architectural design.

Design and apply a structural element for the architectural design.

Tasks - Methodology

Explore, Apply, Document and Explain.

This second assignment emphasizes on proposing details for certain sections of a

building, both structural and architectural detailing.

Your task is to find and analyse the construction of a 2-storey or 3-storey residential
building where you need to identify and propose only two (2) construction details for
the selected elements of the building:

- Wall
- Door
- Window
- Slab
- Staircase
- Roof

The construction method must consist use of either timber, steel, concrete or
composite material shown in the section and details of the drawings.

You are to strictly draw the building manually and NO computer aided drawings
will be accepted. Your drawings must include the appropriate specifications,
symbols, dimensions and the proposed materials clearly.

Particularly, you should be able to show and apply your knowledge in construction
drawing that you provide and reflect your understanding of the construction itself.

During tutorial sessions, please bring the following:-

Your proposed residential design-sketches or drawings.

Not more than one (1) typewritten A4 page summarising your research into
your proposed material(s) for the superstructure, roof and other relevant
construction system. This will include a description of the building
components, specified sizes and any additional relevant technical information
Page 2 of 4
which may be useful for the purpose of this exercise. Please provide the
appropriate detailed references for the sources of all your information in your
typewritten submission.

ALL OF THE ABOVE MUST BE IN HARDCOPY.

Drawings (Visual images, Annotated Sketches and drawings)

Construction process, methods and materials.

Documentation can also be in the form of pictures, sketches, drawings

Analyse and Explain

Specification of material used in construction

Dimensions and sizes of components
Standards of descriptions
Procedures of constructing the components

Submission Requirement

A2 presentation sheet in a clear cover containing the following:

1. Floor Plan
2. Section
3. Two (2) construction details of selected building elements
The drawings need to be scaled (1:50 or suitable scale) and manually
illustrated.
Building specifications.
Project 2 tutorial log sheet.
Drawing and sketches are meant to provide visual documentation and
communication. Hence they are required to be neat, clear and annotated.
Assumptions can be made through reference from book/drawings (DO NOT
PLAGIARISE).
Method of construction must be according to the local climatic condition.

Assessment criteria

The assessment for this assignment will be based on your:-

understanding of the brief

quality of the documentation of drawings and detailing of the construction
elements.
appropriate use of drawing standards e.g symbols, dimensions and
specifications.
quality and clarity of your drawings.
