Cultural Diversity Assessment

1. What is your definition of diversity?

Diversity is having a varied quality or quantity of an object, living being, or abstraction. As it

pertains to my educational profession, diversity would be found in the backgrounds, abilities,
and characteristics of my students.

2. Do the scholars in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds?

Yes. Even in schools where the students may have similar backgrounds, students each have
their own unique experiences and interpretations of those experiences.

3. What are my perceptions of students from different racial or ethnic groups?

Their experiences, cultures, and, most of all, identities need to be taken into account when
creating a lesson. This is essential for helping students make connections between current
learning and background knowledge.

4. What are my perceptions of scholars with different dialects or special needs?

As a teacher, I will need to be resilient and up for the challenges presented when working with
students with English abilities and content abilities that are dissimilar from my own.

5. How do I respond to my scholars based on these perceptions?

Scaffolding the information and using big picture ideas will be helpful. When learning the
content knowledge, students will benefit from learning in a cultural context that is either
generated directly from the students themselves or by the teacher utilizing students background
knowledge that was obtained by some other means.

6. Have I experienced other people make assumptions about me based on my specific

culture? How did that make me feel?

Yes. People assume I am white. Then they find out my last name and assume I know Spanish.
Then they find out I dont know Spanish and I feel white again. It bothers me that I dont know
Spanish.

7. What steps do I need to take to make my instructional program responsive to diverse

needs?

At the beginning of the year, I will need to create and administer an assessment that obtains
useful information about the students background, personality, school philosophy, and learning
style preference. Then I need to act on that knowledge by using it as the context in which I
present concepts and structure student interactions.
8. What information, skills, and resources do I need to effectively teach from a
multi-cultural perspective?

I need to know students background, personality, school philosophy, and learning style
preference. I will need the experience and knowledge of best practices in order to materialize
students contextual knowledge in a meaningful way and I will need other teachers, staff, and
parents in order to improve utilization and delivery of material.

9. In what ways am I collaborative when addressing the needs of all my scholars?

I gather data from student surveys and work with other teachers, staff, and parents in order to
improve utilization and delivery of material.
