Career/Occupation # 1: General Manager


Job Description:
A general manager is responsible for creating and maintaining policies in a specific
department. They direct, coordinate and manage any activities as well. General
managers are also responsible for creating schedules with deadlines, assigning work,
and ensuring a project is completed. Essentially, this occupation is all about managing
different tasks and conducting daily operations in a workplace department. They often
report to the chief executive officer of the company as well.

Earnings:
The average salary of a general manager in Canada is $70,766 per year.
Working Conditions:
General managers work in comfortable offices near the department that they direct.
They also travel frequently to confer with other managers from different divisions.

Required Education/Training:
A university degree, preferably, in business administration, hospital administration,
finance or other discipline related to the occupation, will most likely be required.

Essential Skills Required:


Communication Skills: General managers must be able to communicate clearly and
concisely when speaking to employees about different projects. They must also be able
to communicate persuasively and effectively when negotiating deals.

Leadership Skills: General managers must be able to lead a specific department


successfully with minimum errors.

Time-Management Skills: A general manager must be able to handle many tasks in


their own time effectively. They must ensure to complete all their work exceptionally and
meet their goals.

Decision-Making Skills: As a general manager, there are many decisions to be made


when managing a department, and creating policies. They must assess the different
options in a situation and solve it in the best way possible.

Management Skills: General managers must organize, direct and supervise many
activities in their particular department.

Career/Occupation # 2: Chief Executive Officer


Job Description:
A Chief Executive Officer (CEO) career may seem like a job where the CEO can do
whatever they like. While they do have freedom with many things, some cannot be
delegated. A CEO must set strategies and a vision for a particular plan. The senior
management team and investors do help, but ultimately the CEO has the final say. They
also must allocate the members of the senior executive team for the company, leading
other leaders ultimately. But essentially, all success and failure falls on the CEOs
shoulders. They must handle operations, marketing, strategy, financing, creation of
company culture, human resources, hiring, firing, compliance with safety regulations,
sales, PR, etc. A CEO is the face of a company and therefore must act accordingly.
Earnings:
The average CEO makes about $145,900 per year. Depending on what field you are in,
this estimate may vary.

Working Conditions:
Normally, a CEO is found in his/her office but ultimately a CEO works in a variety of
places. They also tend to travel quite a lot for business reasons and are therefore
moving around even more.

Required Education/Training:
To become a CEO, a bachelor degree of a related field is generally required. Although,
a preference is given to candidates of an MBA. Extensive experience in business is also
very helpful.

Essential Skills Required:


Critical Thinking Skills: There are plenty of problems that come up when being a
CEO. A successful CEO must be able to think critically and swiftly so that they can
effectively solve problems in their company.

Management Skills: One of the main responsibilities of a CEO is to manage its


company. They must have strong management skills to have an effective company.

Organizational Skills: As CEOs, there are many things to balance in their career. They
must be able to stay organised even through pressured periods.

Leadership Skills: A CEO must be able to lead essentially everyone in their company
efficiently and effectively.

Determination: Without determination, a CEO will have no real drive behind their
actions. Therefore they must have determination to achieve all the goals of the
company.

Future Prospects:
This career is shrinking unfortunately. There is an estimated 1.2% drop in employment
of CEOs. From 2014-2024, there will be around 1,480 available employments for CEOs.

Career/Occupation # 3: Chief Financial Officer


Job Description:
A CFOs responsibility is to oversee any financial operations in a workplace. They
manage the budgeting processes, monitor strategic business plans, assist in company
decisions and also manage the capital request. The CFO will report to the CEO while
also assisting him/her. CFOs also work closely with the management team, oversee
companys transactions, manage financial issues with third parties, and lastly, report
financial results to the board of directors. They are involved with all financial-related
activities.
Earnings:
The average salary of a CFO is $123,000. This average may alter according to specific
job fields.

Working Conditions:
A CFO will work in an office environment however, extensive travel is necessary for
different business reasons.

Required Education/Training:
A minimum of a bachelor degree in Accounting, business or finance is generally
required. However, it is preferred to have a masters degree in accounting or business
administration. Extensive business experience is also very useful.

Essential Skills Required:


Math Skills: CFOs work with numbers ultimately all the time. They must have strong
math skills to be able to work with numbers for a long period of time.

Management Skills: A CFO must oversee workers as they do any financial-related


activities. Therefore, you must be able to manage your team and lead them in the right
direction.

Critical Thinking Skills: CFOs must be able to effectively make decisions and solve
problems guiding the company to success.

Analytical Skills: A CFO may assist executives with decisions that affect the company,
and therefore they must possess great analytical skills.

Detail Oriented: When preparing financial reports and statements, a CFO must pay
close attention to detail so that there are no errors.

Future Prospects:
This career has a very high outlook. It is projected to grow 9% from 2014-2024. CFOs
play an essential role in maintaining financial health in businesses. Therefore, with our
economy growing with more businesses, there are more vacancies for this career.

A similar trend that you may see above, is that all my interested occupations involve
management. It is a huge interest of mine to be in a managing position and to obtain a
business management degree in university as well. Therefore, the three occupations
that I have chosen fall under business management.
