ASSIGNMENT: WEEK 4

CONTINUOUS TIME SYSTEMS

1. Coupled Oscillator

A system with input x(t) and output y(t) can be described by

where w(t) is an internal variable.

a. The system function H(s) = Y(s) / X(s) for this system can be written in the form

Determine the numerical values (or closed-form numerical expressions) for the constants c1,
c2, p1, and p2.

b. Draw a block diagram representing the system by just using two-input adders, gains and
integrators. Indicate the internal variable w(t) in the block diagram.

2. Block Diagram

Consider the system represented by the following block diagram.

a. Is it possible to represent this system with a linear dierential equation with constant
coecients? If yes, solve for the dierential equation. If no, briefly explain why not.

b. Determine the poles of this system.

3. Feedback

A system with input w(t) and output y(t) is represented by the dierential equation

This system is placed in a feedback loop as shown below.

Determine a dierential equation that relates the input x(t) and output y(t) of the closed loop
system. Your answer should NOT depend on w(t) or any of its derivatives.
