Project FUndamentals project
In Project Fundamentals II we were able to decide what project we would like to do that involves helping out in
the community. To help and complete this, I would need to get involved/participate in The Hawaiian Wildlife
Fund. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Hawaii's native wildlife through
research, education and conservation. I had the privilege to join and volunteer to help out in this organization.
What does the hawaiian wildlife fund do?
The Hawaiian Wildlife Fund has multiple different programs all over the island. Some of
these programs are:
The Honu Watch takes care of the turtles, counts how many
Hawksbill Turtle Recovery Project arrived at the beach, their health, the weather, day, how
Hawksbill Turtle Watch many visitors came, and answer questions from the public.
This program is located in Hookipa.
Hawksbill Turtle Nest Watch

Turtle Fence Building

Honu Watch

Maui Monk Seal Watch

Makai Watch, and etc.

My experience
I had a great experience at The Hawaii Wildlife Fund. I was able to learn more
about the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and about the Hawaii Wildlife Fund.

First Week: I needed to learn everyones names, where everything is located, how
to approach people, and learn more facts about the turtles.

Second Week: In my second week, I was able to write down data about the turtles.

This data included how many people visited the beach, how many people are at the
beach every 30 minutes, how many turtles arrived at the beach every 30 minutes,
what time they came, what time they leave, whats the weather, hows the turtles
health, and any other reminders.
21st Century Skills
My project involved all of these 21st Century Skills:

1. Civic Literacy and Engagement- This project involved the community and I was able to help make a better environment
for turtles. Also, I was able to join The Hawaii Wildlife Fund which is an organization that always helps with the
community.
2. Communication Skills- I needed to get involved with the community, speaking with the tourists and locals about any questions
they had about the turtles. I was able to improve on keeping a professional conversation with anyone and in different
circumstances. Also, how to deal with rejection and to keep a smile on my face.

3. Global Awareness- I needed to inform the public about these endangered species. Also, these tourists came from different
parts of the world and I needed to understand everyones perspective on the turtles. Also, everyones beliefs, this really helped
me improve on having an open mind.

4. Interpersonal Skills-I always had daily contact with The Hawaii Wildlife Fund. This organization is about group work and
completing the goal. This has really helped me to work well with others and to be positive. This skill is the most important skills
that we will use in our entire lives.
**Thank you Emma
for helping me do
this on Photoshop. :)
Research - My best resources was my
interviews and Hawaii
Wildlife Funds website.
Also, the
naturalists I worked with
helped me to learn more
about interacting with the
community and turtles.
How Can You Help?
There are different ways to help the sea turtles, here are a few:

1. Dont step on the coral reefs. The coral reefs are alive and provide shelter and food
for the turtles.
2. Skip the shampoo. When using the beach showers, dont use shampoo because itll go
back to the beach water.
3. Keep your distance from the turtles. Its important that these turtles get their rest.
4. Whats here on the land will be in the ocean the next day. Its important to recycle
and to try to make sure that what we buy is something we can recycle.
5. Volunteer!
