Julie trained as a potter in Adelaide as a student at the South Australian School of Art under Ben Kypridakis and
Jeff Mincham. On moving to Melbourne she worked at the Carlton Arts Centre and continued her education
through the many visiting potters and in the work-shops run by the Victorian Ceramic Group. Her exhibitions
included participation in 'Future Functions' at the Manly Art Gallery (2004); at 'Impressed' in New Delhi
(2006);'Alchemy in Clay' at the Kazari Gallery in Melbourne (2006);'Connecting Identities' at the Australian Wool
Museum (2008); and at Habitat Gallery with a group of Victorian potters following a residency at Sanskriti Kendra,
Delhi (2010). She was the recipient of many ceramics awards, including at the Sydney Tea Pot show (2006) and
the Art of Tea, Bendigo (2006).
She leaves behind a considerable body of ceramic and other work. Her teapots and other vessels, often glazed a
vibrant turquoise blue, reflected her love of the natural world. The use of black bamboo and wax and other
embellishments from the sea made each work unique. She made vessels of all kinds, including for use in the
Mountain to the Mouth festival. But she was not just a potter. She worked with glass, with mosaic and with kelp
that she dragged from the beach. Continued page 9

After a bite of lunch, 14 members and friends embarked on a Food Forum. This was sponsored by CoGG. We
looked at the topics of growing, consuming and disposing of foods.
Carmel Smith talked about the enjoyment of gardening, and about spin-offs like friendships, sharing excess, and
visits to gardens both at home and abroad. Trish Clayton talked about food consumption, particularly in relation to
her recent Vietnam trip and the freshness of locally produced food. No Coles or Woolies there! The 3rd speaker was
Darby Munroe, from CoGG, who spoke about the green waste management and the reduction of plastic
contaminants in the product.
Then followed a brain storming on all kinds of ideas. Chairman John McIntosh helped us distil the array of
ideas down to a manageable can do list:
1) Develop a seed-saving bank
2) Run workshops on basic gardening skills a couple of times per year
3) Hold composting and worm farm workshops.
4) Develop a food swap system through the internet/Facebook
5) Look at the already-successful communal gardening that is happening in Wattlebird Ave.

'Executive skills', also known as 'life skills' are vital for our children to succeed in the futures they design for themselves. Executive skills are often learnt later on in life on the job by trial and error. They help individuals
to be adaptable or to 'read the play'. Executive skills are the people skills that enable us human beings to be able to socialise, communicate and interact with each other in harmony. They can include gratitude,
empathy, communication, imagination, organisation, self-awareness, resilience and so forth. By linking the teaching of executive skills at home together as a family, it is hoped that you will all connect together as a
close unit, so if your child experiences stress or anxiety, they will be able to talk to you as a parent.
Growth mindset can be defined as one's ability of believing in themselves to grow and develop through dedication and hard work. Some people may have experienced something or been told something in their past
and then take this into their future. They may start to create a future that is determined by their past. For example, I remember from a young age that I was always good at maths so I took this belief and made it fit my
future. On the other hand, I remember believing that I was not a very good reader at school. I have a memory of reading with an older child in school named Michael. From that day on, I believed that I was not good at
reading. I took my past and made it my future. However, with growth mindset, it is said that people can change this view. I can't remember consciously changing my view of my reading skill through dedication and
hard work, but I now know that I'm not a bad reader, whatever that means anyway. Some say that adding the word 'yet' to the end of the sentence could change the whole meaning. For example, I'm not very good at
tennis, could create a future where there is little or no possibility of growth. I'm not very good at tennis yet, implies that improvement is not only possible, but probable in the future.
I met my wife Sandi in London. At the time, she was working various jobs earning enough money to get by. We cycled together around Europe, worked some more in London and then travelled back to Australia via
the Trans-Siberian railway. When we returned, Sandi studied tourism. During her studies, she worked various jobs including managing an art-house cinema in Melbourne. As time went by, Sandi returned to study.
This time she undertook an Arts Degree, which she had always wanted to complete. We moved to Tasmania for some time which interrupted her studies while she worked in tourism. We moved back to the mainland
where Sandi continued her studies in Bendigo before gaining her degree with honours. She also graduated with a teaching degree. After doing some part-time relief teaching, Sandi gained employment with the
Geelong Regional Library Corporation working in various libraries around Geelong. Once again, Sandi returned to study this time a Master's Degree in Information Services, which would give her professional
qualifications as a librarian. Sandi currently works as a Children's and Youth Librarian at one of the branches in Geelong. I can't imagine the day when Sandi is not learning.

Entering the tranquil environs of the Thirteenth Beach Golf Club on a
cold Sunday in July begins to set the mood. Walk into the beautiful
clubhouse and the mood is all around you. You are welcomed by a
buzz of voices as people get re-acquainted and look out onto the
glorious views of one of Victoria's finest golf courses. This was the
setting for our third (or perhaps fourth?) Jazz in July, and quite
possibly it was the best.
Music was provided by Sandra Talty's quartet. They provided a fine mixture of
traditional and swing jazz. Vocals by Sandra and Michael McQuaid were smooth
and expressive, and the balance of reeds, guitar, bass and drums was much
enjoyed. The band played two generous sets over the course of the afternoon, and
the crowd showed their warm appreciation. There was a small but heavily used
dancing space in one corner.
The catering team at Thirteenth had set up the room elegantly, and all of the
capacity crowd of 120 were able to see and hear very well, while enjoying the
stunning view. There were many favourable comments on the meal for its variety
and quality, and the table service was unobtrusive and efficient.
The success of this event assures that it will return in future years. Sadly, it may be
without the talents of Michael McQuaid, who is off on an extended musical
adventure in London. We wish this fine musician every success on his travels.
Events like this do not just happen. The whole BHFMS Committee pitched in, and in
particular Natale Lewington orchestrated and made everything come neatly
together.
Our next monthly concert is on Sunday August 13 at 2.30pm at All Saints Church,
and will feature baritone Ian Cousins and pianist Katherine Capewell. Then on
September 3, the Barwon Heads Chorale will present a concert in the BH Hall,
where the highlight will be a wonderful medley from Les Miserables. AND you are
all advised to save the date for a very special event on Saturday February 24th
2018. All I can say about this event at this stage is that it will again be at Thirteenth
Beach, outdoors under the stars, and will feature a nationally and internationally
known performer. WATCH THIS SPACE!
I was asked yesterday why one would join the BHFMS. The annual fee for a couple

around $70. Even attending half the concerts would make you a saving of at least
$15. And you would be helping to keep an important village organisation in a
position to offer events such as this one! You can get information about joining on
our Website, or by attending any concert.

PAUL EVANS
A PLACE SO

SOLO EXHIBITION
12-31 AUGUST

Email:seaviewgallery@eftel.net.au
This is an exciting month at Seaview with an Exhibition from an outstanding artist Paul Evans.
A Place So Real Paul Evans 12 31 August
Seaview is looking forward to this extraordinary artist's exhibition. Paul Evan's work is visually dynamic, beautifully balanced and immensely evocative. Paul captures not only
the scene but the atmosphere. He creates a beautiful composition by skillfully and patiently building up his works by careful observation and colour, tone and form. He works
in acrylic. The composition combined with the faithful rendition of colour and shape results in truly outstanding works. He is represented in numerous private collections in
Australia and overseas. New works from Carole Foster and Di King have also arrived for August.
Wine Tasting Baie Wines.
We will also be featuring a wine tasting of the latest release wines from Baie Wines. A small batch winery on the Bellarine Peninsula that produces award winning wines from
their Curlewis Vineyard. Join us for a glass of Baie wine and meet the artist on Saturday 12 August 2-4pm.

Metropolis Gallery ~ 11 26 August - Art for Books: Adrian Lockhart + Jedda Robaard
While Adrian Lockhart and Jedda Robaard are two distinctly contrasting artists, Metropolis Gallery has brought them together for an upcoming exhibition Art for Books to be
launched by Patti Manolis, CEO Geelong Library on Friday 11 August. The artists share a love of books and the exhibition presents a wonderful selection of each artist's works
featured in a number of their published books, which will also be available for purchase during the exhibition.
Jedda Robaard is a local children's book illustrator and author whose work is well known nationally and internationally, having been published in many languages. Book
illustration is an opportunity for Jedda to create little worlds where characters can play, unhindered by society's
restrictions. This exhibition represents her journey creating those worlds, from her initial book Rabbit's Year through
to the ongoing Little Creatures Series. Her exhibition happily coincides with Children's Book Week and Jedda will
present an Artist's Talk at 10.30am Saturday 19 August. Jedda says 'The majority of these pieces have been
created simply with pencil and watercolour. They are just puddles of colour if you like. Puddles manipulated into tiny
beings with feelings, obligations and agendas'.
Adrian Lockhart's love of the line in printmaking and Adrian Lockhart Ghosts 2017 woodbock print
drawing is well represented in Art for Books, but his
discovery of the artist book in its various forms is at the
heart. Showing his one-off and limited edition books
alongside related paintings, drawings, woodblocks,
etchings and monotypes demonstrates how the union of
the 'book' and the 'mark' has formed a significant direction
in his already substantial and established life's work.
Books have always fascinated Lockhart: 'I like the
excitement, discovery and tactility of page turning. As can
be seen in this show, each artist's book is quite individual
and can vary considerably. There are unique books and
books in limited editions'.
Meet the artists on Opening Night 6pm Friday 11 August
when Patti Manolis, CEO Geelong Library will launch the
exhibitions all welcome! Jedda Robaard will present an
artist's talk at 10.30am Saturday 19 August. The shows
run until 26 August. METROPOLIS GALLERY - 64 Ryrie
