advancements are also being made in the district through the
replacement of outdated devices, new classroom carts of laptops
being purchased, and we are working to include more application of
technology skills in our lessons on a daily basis.

The building project has entered the design phase with an early site
package set to start within the next month. The total project for the
district is $48 million and will build a new 7-12 JSHS, along with an
addition and remodeling to our existing 3-6 Intermediate school which
will become a PK-6 elementary building. The goal of the project is to
create a system of 21st century learning environments that incorporate
life skills such as project-based learning, collaboration, creativity, as

embark on a new school year, it is my challenge to all students, staff,

Schools! It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I write this
letter to introduce myself to you as the newly hired Curriculum
Director. I am excited to have the opportunity to utilize my skills
as an educational leader, knowledge of curriculum and instruction,
and staff development to continue to move Fostoria City Schools
down the path to greatness! My goal is to serve as a resource
and support for staff, students, and families alike to be a true
partner in education to ensure every childs success.
As curriculum director, there will be several areas that I will
be working on and supporting staff and students in. First and
foremost, I will be focusing on consistent implementation of
instructional strategies to increase student achievement across
the district and utilizing data to drive our instruction. Other areas
that I will be focusing on will be grant writing, coordination of
State Testing for the district, facilitation of a review of the districts
science curriculum and potential new curriculum adoption, and
providing structure for our new teacher mentorship program. I will
also continue supporting our three elementary schools as they
move into Year 3 as Leader in Me Schools and provide support
and direction for our Junior Senior High School as they enter their
first year implementing LEAD.
As Curriculum Director, my door is always open, and I welcome
your comments or questions. Please continue to check the district
website regularly - My goal is to have helpful links, educational
resources, new information, upcoming events, and additional
information to help support you and your child.

First, I would like to say how excited I am to become part of the
FIES family and reconnect with all of the students! I just realized
that the 6th grade class was the first class I had when I took over
as principal at Riley. I cannot wait to see how much all of the
students have grown and matured. Throughout the school year,
we will continue to focus on the Leader in Me, with a major focus
on goal setting and the steps needed to achieve their goals. Our
role as the adult is to allow students to see their full potential
in order for each child to achieve their goals and dreams. In
order for this to be successful, it is important that communication
between home and school is consistent. Throughout the year,
important information will be sent home via newsletters, letters,
placed on our Facebook page, )RVWRULD,QWHUPHGLDWH6FKRRO

or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your childs teacher or
myself. I can be reached at kbernal@fostoriaschools.org or by

will be information shared that highlights important information
regarding FIES and third grade, a chance to tour the building, meet
staff, as well as have a class meeting with your childs teacher
and fellow families and students. Students are encouraged to
bring their school supplies on this night as well. Dinner will be
provided. We hope to see you at this event and look forward to

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I write this letter of introduction as the new Assistant Principal/ Dean of Students of our
PK-6 buildings. I am truly honored to accept this new role within our district and look forward to collaborating further with Mrs. Bernal,
Mrs. Bauman and the rest of our staff within all three buildings. Working together, I am confident that we will continue to provide our
students with a truly challenging and enriching school experience.
The mission of Fostoria City Schools is to Inspire. Succeed. Leave a Legacy. As an educator and instructional leader, I believe in
creating quality relationships that inspire all stakeholders to succeed. Approaching all situations with a student-centered, team focus will
allow for success. Doing what is best for children enables them to grow and excel in all areas. As we continue through the school year,
I hope to add value to the administrative team through integrating a deep understanding of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People into
many of our practices.
In the future, I am looking forward to working closely with parents, community members and staff to create an environment at Fostoria
City Schools that promotes an intense focus on leadership. I am dedicated to promoting a positive learning environment for all students
and am excited to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that student leadership is our main focus for success. Please feel free to
stop in and say hello, as my door is always open. If there is anything I can assist you with, please let me know.

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! It is our mission at
Fostoria Junior/Senior High School to create, nurture and sustain
a community where every young person feels valued. We are
dedicated to the academic and social development of the students
of Fostoria City Schools and we look forward to working with families
and community members to ensure the success of our students.

This year FJSHS will be joining

the districts elementary buildings
in their partnership with Franklin-
Covey and the Leader In Me, as
a LEAD school. Each new school
year brings opportunities for
academic growth and growth in all
areas of development. Although
children must be knowledgeable
when they graduate, they must also
be healthy, engaged, responsible,
and caring people. LEAD strives to provide our student with the
vision and language to lead the school in a way that addresses all
areas of development. As each child discovers and develops his or
her unique gifts and talents, they are given opportunities to lead. As
leaders, they become active, engaged partners in their own education
and their self-confidence, responsibility, and initiative grows. The
children quickly understand the benefits of different gifts and talents;
they learn to listen to new ideas, work together to achieve results,
and motivate one another to be the best. Together, we will watch
each and every child grow throughout the year.
If you are interested in supporting our schools leadership initiative
we suggest you start by using the 7 Habits language at home. As the
school year unfolds, the children will be learning the language and
meaning of the 7 Habits. By hearing the same language at home
and at school, you send your student a strong message of what you

believe is important and that we are all on the same teamthe team
that wants to help succeed. When parents and schools support one
another, the sky is the limit! Below is a summary of each of the habits:
Habit 1: Be Proactive (Youre in Charge)
3HUIRUPLQJ$UWV&HQWHU
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind (Have a Plan)
Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win)
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood ( Listen
Before You Talk) Habit 6: Synergize (Together Is Better)
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best)
Please plan on attending the annual Fostoria City Schools Back to
School Bash on Thursday, August 10th, from 5:30 7:30 at Fostoria
Intermediate School. Also, the Fostoria Junior/Senior High School
Open House will be held on Wednesday, August 16th, from 5:00
7:00. Students will be able to pick up their schedules, find their
classrooms and meet their teachers, locate their lockers and start
preparing for their return to school on Monday, August 21st.. If you
are not able to attend on the 16th, schedules will be available for
pick up from 8:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. in the counselors office starting
Monday, August 14th.

Finally, we would like to inform parents, guardians, and students

that the North parking lot will not be accessible due to the new
building project. The South doors to the school will be the only
usable entrance for students to access the building. Student
parking will be restricted to the South parking lot only. The school
day will start promptly at 7:35 a.m. and students will be released
from their classes at 2:25 p.m.
We look forward to an exciting year filled with academic challenges
and lasting memories that our students, parents and community
members will take great pride in.
