United Way of Salem County Agency Report

United Way has been serving communities for over 70 years and has different branches

all over the world. United Way was created to help communities thrive and have everlasting

effects on the communities they assist. The United Way branch focuses on Health, Education,

and Financial Stability and has created programs to assist in each of those departments. As

stated before, United Way has many different locations all over the world, but the United Way I

will be interning at is the United Way of Salem County.

Mission

United Way of Salem County (UWSC) has been making efforts to make improvements to

the community they serve. UWSC has joined forces with surrounding businesses, programs, and

schools that also has the same goal as United Way, which is to impact the community that

theyre stationed in. UWSC focuses on bringing resources to Salem County, which are very well

much needed. Even though its not an easy task, UWSC has brought some effective programs

and services to the area of Salem County and they will not stop until its duties are fulfilled.

United Way of Salem County strives to fulfill Salem County's needs by focusing on Education,

Financial Stability, Health, and Youth Development.

UWSCs mission is to engage the caring power of the community via Giving,

Advocacy, and Volunteering to advance the access to critical resources in Education, Income

Stability, Health, and Youth Development (United Way of Salem, 2017). Along with this

statement, UWSC has goals that they set for each of their focus points. For education, UWSC

has stated that they will build a strong foundation of early education, promote increased high

school graduation with the transition to and through a post- secondary education and/or career

development (United Way of Salem, 2017). UWSCs financial stability goal is to help people

gain the income and financial tools to thrive (United Way of Salem, 2017). Their health goal is

to improve child and adult health by promoting healthy behaviors (United Way of Salem, 2017).

Lastly, UWSCs youth development goal is to create a cohesive coalition to address gaps in

service throughout Salem County and provide positive developmental resources for youth

(United Way of Salem, 2017).

Demographics

United Way of Salem County serves the county as a whole. They have programs that

serve all ages, race, gender, and religions; therefore, you would consider the organization to be

very diverse. Due to the wide range of demographics, UWSC doesnt have a specific targeted

population, but on the other hand, they do have some programs that may be for certain age

groups. UWSC has the Early Learning Academy that helps with child development in an

intellectual manner. The Early Learning Academy program is also integrated with the head start

and is for the children who are too young to enroll in school. UWSC has summer programs that

they offer for youth and their targeted population is the ages 13-17 years of age. These two

programs are the only programs that have certain demographic restrictions.

Policies and Procedures

UWSC has a group of board of executives who establishes the policies and procedures.

If any changes are to be made, they all must be made in writing, just so everything is

documented. The executive director has complete responsibility of the administration policies

and will consult with the committee when if needed. Just like most companies/organizations, the

employees are given handbooks during orientation, which are used as reference guides for the

employees. UWSC has a chain of command, but all employees report to the executive director,

who works closely with the committee and the board of directors.

Governance and Structure

United Way of Salem County is a non-profit organization which makes them exempt

from federal and state income taxes. UWSC has with structured leadership that is designed as a

hierarchy. At the top of the hierarchy you have the President and Chief Executive Officer

Monique Chadband and then the Board of Directors. Next in order is the governance leadership,

for the different departments within the organization, which consist of seven people. First on the

Funding and Partnerships

UWSC is a non-profit organization and they are funded by receiving donations and

charities. The donations that are received by UWSC are to be solely received as gifts. The

donations must be given without the contributor looking for anything in return. UWSC has

many contributors/partnerships with many different companies, which helps them towards

finances; in addition, UWSC has other sources of income such as their gym and fitness club

memberships, child care services, and they rent out space for occasions and meetings. The top

donors that bless the UWSC are businesses that have been contributing to the county/community

for years, and those companies are PSEG Nuclear Plant, Mannington Mills, DuPont Chambers

Works and Atlantic City Electric. That is just a short list of the partnerships that UWSC has,

they have many more agencies that help with contributions. Such as:

Memorial Hospital of Salem County

Franklin Bank
TD Bank
Wal-Mart
Chemours
Faith Works Council
Salem Main Street
Food Bank of South Jersey
Live Healthy Salem County

The agencies listed above are agencies that help with shelter, food, religion, financial assistance,

and clothing. These companies contribute to UWSC in many ways that benefits families and

individuals. Although the UWSC had accomplished a lot on their own, these contributions help

them accomplish even more.

Strengths, Trends, and Challenges

People face challenges on a daily basis and that does not make businesses and

organizations an exception. UWSC faces challenges just like any other organization. Due to

UWSC's location is placed in a county/community that is very small and low-income; it makes it

hard to achieve a lot of their goals and accomplishments. A lot of the programs that they create

dont always generate the outcomes that they wish to have and it doesnt make the program

successful. Along with the challenges, UWSC has some strengths as well. United Way
Agency Report 8

Organizations alone has been successfully serving communities for over 70 years and hasnt

stopped yet. They also have locations all of over the world that services communities. UWSC

has introduced financial stability and basic needs, healthy programs, different education

programs, youth development programs, and community support programs; and all of these

programs are successful and still growing. As far as a trend, the current trend that UWSC is

focusing on is Youth Development. UWSC is always focusing on trying to change the mindset

of youth and teach them to think outside of the box. Each year UWSC creates innovating

programs for the youth to learn creative skills that they do not learn in school. Not only does

these programs challenge the youth, they provide one in a lifetime experiences.

Internship Role

During this summer internship of 2017, at UWSC, my role as an intern is a program

coordinator. The outcome of the internship is for me to create and assist with creating programs

to stimulate the minds of the youth. During this time, I will be researching ideas, creating

activities, researching funding, creating grants, and being part of a change. I plan on getting as

much experience as possible from this internship. I will also be working closely with the Site

Supervisor and other Program Coordinators to fulfill this experience. To keep track of this

experience, I will be keeping journal logs and creating visual presentations throughout the

internship.

United Way is an organization that has been helping families across the world for over 70

years. United Way of Salem County is striving to make changes in a small county and has

shown that they're passionate about what they do. UWSC has a mission that they are dedicated

to and that mission is to "engage the caring power of the community via Giving, Advocacy, and

Volunteering to advance the access to critical resources in Education, Income Stability, Health,

and Youth Development (United Way of Salem, 2017). I myself have a passion for helping

people, especially the youth, our future leaders. I feel like this is the perfect organization for me

and I cannot wait to apply my knowledge and lend a helping hand to the United Way of Salem

County.
