Course The purpose of PET 379 Teaching 3-5 Physical Education is to prepare pre-service teachers to plan,
Goal deliver, and assess developmentally appropriate physical education lesson content for children in
grades 3-5. Teacher candidates (TC) will learn and apply physical education content knowledge in
lecture and practicum based learning experiences. TCs will be provided opportunities to observe
teachers, peer teach, and interact with 3-5 grade children in field-placement settings. All field
placements will be supervised by public school teachers, university supervisors, and/or course
instructor.

Required Course A) In and Out of Class (IOC) Assignments. Teacher candidates will demonstrate effective teaching
Activities practices of 3-5 PE content in a peer-instruction context. In class application assignments will
include, but are not limited to:
a) Deconstruct sports and movement activities by skill and performance concept, and generate
developmentally appropriate task extensions and challenges for 3-5th graders.
b) Design and deliver low-organized activities & lead up games appropriate for 3-5 PE to peers;
c) Utilize authentic motor and skill-related assessments that are aligned with NASPE grade level
benchmarks and indicators; and
Assignments will account for 15%of your overall course grade. These assignments are designed to address the following
professional standards: NASPE: 1.2, 1.5, 2.1, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3; WVPTS: 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F,3D, 3E; WVETS: 1.1,

B) Clinical Teaching Experience. During 4 weeks of this course TCs will plan and deliver 3-5
Physical Education to children in Monongalia Public Schools. In some instances, TCs will
participate in partner and single teaching formats. TCs will utilize the SPARK Curriculum to build
and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans and assessments. TCs will adapt
lessons to meet the needs of all students in assigned teaching classes. TCs will teach 40-45
minute lessons to groups of 20+students.

During the teaching practicum, teachers will be videotaped and then complete a systematic
analysis of instruction to provide instructional/pedagogical feedback. The teacher reflective cycle
will be used and reinforced within this experience (plan, deliver, reflect, modify, plan, deliver,
etc.).
This clinical experience will account for 50%of your overall course grade. This assignment is designed to address the
following professional standards: NASPE: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 4.2, 4.3, 4.5, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3; WVPTS: 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E,
2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F,3D, 3E; WVETS: 1.1, 2.2, 2.4; WVU CF: 1a, 1b, 1d, 4a, 4b, 4c

C) Curriculum Justification Paper (Letter to Parents). TCs will develop a justification

paper that communicates their understanding of the historical, developmental,
psychosocial, community, and health-related benefits associated with the contents
inclusion in the K-5 physical education curriculum. The assignment is contextualized
using a scenario in which the TC needs to justify the inclusion of the content to a group of
key stakeholders in schools and communities
The portfolio assignment will account for 25%of your overall course grade. This assignment is designed to
address the following professional standards: NASPE: 1.3, 1.4

D) Professionalism. The faculty of the Physical Education Teacher Education program is committed
to graduating students who will become highly professional teachers that represent WVU and the
profession well. Therefore, in every class TCs will be assessed on their professionalism using the
rubric provided in Attachment 1. If TCs are identified as having problems in any of the areas
listed on the rubric, they will be required to meet with the faculty and develop a
professional development plan to correct the area or areas of weakness. If the TC does not
improve in these areas, they may be removed from the program.
This will account for 10% of your overall course grade. This is designed to address NASPE: 6.1, 6.3, 6.4

Grading Summary 90-100% A Note: Undergraduate workloads are based on the premise that in order to earn an
average grade in a course, a student needs to invest two (2) hours studying
80-89% B
outside-of-class for every one (1) hour spent in class. For example, a student
70-79% C enrolled in a three (3) credit course should expect to spend two (3) hours per
60-69% D week in class and an additional four (5) hours per week studying outside-of-class if
Below 60% F he or she intends to earn an average grade of C

Attendance Policy Consistent with WVU guidelines, students absent from regularly scheduled examinations because of
authorized University activities will have the opportunity to take them at an alternate time.

The material in this class is important. If you are not in class you cannot learn the material. However,
there are times when unforeseen circumstances will not allow you to attend class. There are 18
scheduled class meetings and laboratory time, you will be allowed to miss one (1) class. If you miss
more than once, it will result in lowering your final grade one letter grade (see below). Exceptions to
this policy can be made at the instructors discretion. It is the responsibility of the TC to communicate
with the instructor of the course PRIOR to his/her absence.

PET 379 PE Syllabus

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MISS FIELD EXPERIENCE DAYS.

MISSING ONE OF THESE WILL RESUILT IN FAILING THIS COURSE.

Tardiness is unprofessional behavior and will not be tolerated. Two (2) tardies = One (1) absence

The following scale is used to assign attendance points.

One absence 0 points

Two absences - 1 letter grade
Three absences - 2 letter grades
Four absences - withdraw from class

Make-up Policy Make up exams and late assignments for absences due to any reason will be at the discretion of the
instructor. Each day late equates to a reduction of 10% in assignment grade.

Quizzes and exams can be made up only if the student misses the quiz/exam because of an excusable
absence. The TC must inform the instructor before an absence takes place to receive an opportunity
to make up a quiz, exam, or any other type of educational activity. If the student knows that he/she
will be missing class for an excusable reason they should make arrangements with the instructor to
take the quiz/exam early. If the student misses a quiz/exam because of an unforeseen excused
absence, they may make up the exam within a week of the missed quiz/exam. The instructor will
have the discretion to give an alternate exam, including an oral exam as a make-up. Quizzes/exams
not made up within a week, will be recorded as a 0, unless there are extenuating circumstances
(chronic illness, family emergency, etc) prohibiting the student from making up the quiz/exam. In
this case, the TC should consider arranging to receive an Incomplete in the class.

Procedure prevent the completion of field/clinical course requirements and completion of programs in the
College of Human Resources & Education that require such placements.

The College of Human Resources and Education has developed procedures for assisting our candidates
