Some Things You Should Know
CAUTION! When performing any checks with the engine running in an enclosed space
such as a garage, be sure there is proper ventilation. Never inhale exhaust
CAUTION gases; they contain carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, extremely
dangerous gas which can cause unconsciousness or death.
CAUTION!
Always set the parking brake securely and block the drive wheels before
CAUTION performing any checks or repairs on the vehicle.

This tester is designed for use by trained service personnel only. The tester has been developed for the sole
purpose of diagnosing and repairing automotive electronic systems. Every attempt has been made to provide
complete and accurate technical information based on factory service information available at the time of
publication. However, the right is reserved to make changes at any time without notice.
FCC Compliance
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to
Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses,
and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction
manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a
residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the
interference at his own expense.
KTS Series ESI[tronic] Software Installation

KTS 650
Your KTS 650 comes pre-loaded with ESI[tronic] software modules A, C9, and P1. The pre-loaded software
needs to be updated to the current version, please follow the update instructions below.
NOTE
To perform the following procedures, you may use the touchscreen and on-
screen keyboard or an optional, external USB mouse and keyboard.
NOTE
It is recommended that the KTS 650 be charged for a minimum of 4 hours
prior to updating the software.

5. In upper right corner, confirm language is set to English (or to whatever language your Windows
operating system is set). Use the up and down arrow keys to make your selection.

11. On the Bosch Applications menu, tap Software Installation two times.
12a.The KTS 650 is pre-loaded with ESI[tronic] modules A, C9, and P. If this is the configuration you
ordered, click the radio button Yes, update automatically. Then go to Step 15 on Page 5.
12b.If your purchase includes software modules other than A, C9, and P, go to the following Step 13.
13. Select the radio button No, perform user-defined update, and click Continue.
The Data download update screen appears:
14. To add a module, use your stylus or mouse to drag the module name from the left column into the right
column.
15. Press Continue.
The Start copying window appears.
16. Confirm that the proper components will be installed to the correct drive on your PC by clicking
Continue.
A progress bar appears while the software is being updated.
When the upgrade is completed, a caution message appears reminding you that a release code may be
required for your PC.
If the only DVD you received is the first of the year (marked 200x/1) then
proceed to Obtaining a Release Code on page 8.
Internet
NOTE
You can use this method from any laptop or PC connected to the internet.
You do not have to have a KTS 650 with an internet connection.
CAUTION! You must include the s in https: in the web address. The s signifies that this
is a secure site. Without the s you will not be able to connect to the Bosch
CAUTION
web site.
2. At the top of the Welcome screen click on Language and select English from the drop-down menu.
NOTE If you do not have your packing slip and do not know your customer
number and/or password, contact Vetronix Customer Support at
(800) 321-4889 x4 for assistance.
5. Enter the email address where you wish to receive the release code.
6. Click register in the lower right corner.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to generate a release code.
8. Enter your ID No. which you must get from the computer screen of the KTS 650.
NOTE To obtain the ID number on the KTS 650, open the ESI[tronic] software,
select Settings > Release > Execute, and the ID number appears on
the Release screen. (See Figure 19)
NOTE To access the release code immediately without having to check your E-
mail, click the back button, and the release code appears next to the ID No.
you entered in Step 8.
You may login and change the password to one of your own choosing.
NOTE To obtain the ID number on the KTS 650, open the ESI[tronic] software,
select Settings > Release > Execute, and the ID number appears on
the Release screen. (See Figure 19)

2. Enter the release code in the space provided and click OK.
KTS 550
INTRODUCTION
CAUTION!
Dont forget to enable your anti-virus software after installation and
CAUTION release are complete.
2. Insert the ESI[tronic] DVD 200x/1 (e.g., 2005/1) into the DVD drive of your PC.
3. Double click My Computer on the Desktop.
4. Locate and double click the DVD Drive in the Folders list (typically D).
5. Double click the folder baa.

6. Click Continue.
The Directories window appears.
7. Specify the directories in which the program files and data will be stored. See Figure 29 for
recommended settings.
NOTE
The software will automatically default to the recommended settings as
shown below.
8. Click Continue.
The ESI[tronic] program components window appears.
9. Confirm the appropriate settings are checked, as in Figure 30.
The more than 3000 MB of data in the Archive DVD can be loaded onto
NOTE your hard drive (provided there is space) or accessed directly from the
DVD when needed.
If you do not wish to load the Archive DVD to your hard drive, click on
the item marked Archive in the right-hand column and drag it to the left-
hand column.
ESI[tronic] now begins loading onto your PC. Depending on the speed of your computer and how much
data you are loading, the copying time varies.
The Firmware Update window appears.
NOTE If you did not attach the KTS 550 to your PC as instructed previously, an
error message pops up, stating Error in Firmware Update for KTS 520/
550/650 at COM1/USB. Click Cancel and the software installation
continues.
15. After the software is completely loaded, perform the Firmware Update by clicking on the Windows Start
button.
19c.Click OK.
The ESI[tronic] Info screen appears.
NOTE If your KTS 550 came with an update DVD (it would be marked U 200x/2,
200x/3, or 200x/4), it must be loaded before proceeding. If your KTS 550
did not come with an update DVD, go to Obtaining a Release Code on
page 24.
7. Click Continue.
The Start copying screen appears.
8. Confirm the settings.
9. Click Continue.
The Firmware Update window appears.
If you did not attach the KTS 550 to your PC as instructed previously, an
error message pops up:

Start button.

If you have not yet performed the software release, please proceed to
Obtaining a Release Code.

NOTE To "Lock" in your release code and prevent it from being lost due to
hardware configuration changes (including wireless cards, LAN,
networks, etc.) please proceed to "Locking in a Release Code" on the next
page.
NOTE
Since locking in a release code is a quick process, it is recommended all
users perform these steps.
7. In the Registry Editor window, click Yes to add the information to the registry.
