Message
These are exciting times at the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), a
premier institute of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt.
of India. In the last couple of years we have started many new Centers of Excellence,
including an IIFM-Industry interface with one of the largest paper companies in the
world, and a Center for Geo-informatics.
Our faculty has been part of important national work, including revision of the
National Forest Policy and calculation of the net present value of Indias forests. The
learning we receive from these projects has contributed to the continuous process
of improvement in our flagship Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry Management
(PGDFM). Over the last three decades, IIFM has been recognized as a leading
exponent of sectoral management education in India. We have produced a widely
recognized pool of talented managers that have contributed to the development of
our country and elsewhere.
IIFM has always emphasized innovative methods of teaching and a very diversified
curriculum. Catering to the Forestry, Environment, Development, Conservation and
other relevant sectors, the pool of managerial talent nurtured at IIFM is provided
admission on the basis of a rigorous entrance process and is drawn from a diverse
geo-socio-cultural and disciplinary backgrounds. The students are provided not only
the learning atmosphere and opportunities expected of any national level institute,
but an effort is made to keep them continuously grounded with the field realities.
The intellectual capital available in ten faculty areas in conjunction with an excellent
infrastructure provides the base for students to mature into holistic managers
with a sensitivity and understanding of geographical, social, cultural, economic and
environmental issues of our times along with the necessary problem solving ability.
Summer internship forms an integral part of the delivery of an optimal mix of theory
and practice required for our students to contribute meaningfully to the sectors
that they eventually choose to work with. Given an opportunity to intern at your

The Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), located at Bhopal, is a sectoral
management institute which constantly strives to create knowledge areas of
Development, Environment, Natural Resource Management and allied sectors. It
disseminates such knowledge to its students and clients in ways that promote its
application by individuals and organizations through various educational courses. The
PGDFM program of IIFM has, since the first batch graduated in 1990, been creating
and nurturing managers ready for tomorrow. The course emphasizes knowledge,
leadership and sensitivity to fuel environmentally, economically and socially balanced
growth in whichever sector our graduates choose to work in.
I welcome your organization to the Summer Internship process for the batch of
2015-17. The Summer Internship at IIFM aims to expose the students, over a period
of 10 weeks, to diverse facets of working in organizations. It is an integral part of
the PGDFM program and opportunity to the students to be exposed to real life
situations. Students are attached to various corporate houses, government agencies
and National and International development agencies to work on independent
projects.
The various sectors our students have made their mark in are conservation,
consultancy, corporate social responsibility, development, ecotourism, environment,
forestry, livelihood, microfinance and more. Our ever growing alumni base, spread
over more than a hundred organizations around the country and abroad, is testament
to this fact. In the evolving context of the current economic and development
imperatives, a manager needs to be agile and respond to the diverse challenges being
faced by organizations. We at IIFM acknowledge this, and the hope that with doing a
Summer Internship in your organization, the students would benefit and develop into
well-rounded professionals who can steer organizations through new challenges. Our
teaching aims to build on this training and then further refine the students capacity
to understand concepts and their practical implications through the second year of
classes with emphasis on specialized core courses and electives. I present before you
the batch of 2015-17 who will be ready to undertake Summer Internship from March

 About Established in 1982 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of
Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, IIFM
was conceptualized in response to the recommendations of the National

IIFM Commission on Agriculture. The impetus generated by these recommendations

culminated in an alliance with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad
through which the philosophy and raison dtre of IIFM was evolved. The
Swedish International Development Agency also contributed financially and
technically in establishing the Institute. Since its inception, IIFM has been home
to some of the most brilliant young minds who are constantly raising the bar
of excellence in this dynamic field. Situated in the City of Lakes, the Indian
Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal is uniquely positioned in South Asia in its
endeavor to blend the concepts of environment and development management
with corporate management expertise.

CULTURE
The students, the faculty, the courses, the field visits and the lush green campus all
play a part in forming the dynamic culture of IIFM. The Institute gives independence
to students to run various committees and cells. This builds in the students an ability
to view the world from all perspectives be it economic or environmental, profit or
people. It drives the students in pursuit of knowledge and inculcates the qualities of
leadership and teamwork in them.

SELECTION PROCESS
Every batch is selected through an extremely stringent selection process, consisting
of several filters to get the best minds in the country. The present batch has been
selected from a pool of top scorers in CAT who further appeared for rigorous
screening rounds of a Written Ability Test and Personal Interview.

PRACTICAL EXPOSURE AND INDUSTRY RELATIONS

IIFM believes in the importance of giving its students extensive practical exposure
alongside invaluable academic inputs to ensure their holistic development. This
ensures a perfect mix of business acumen and academic intellect. Such exposure is
provided by means of Summer Internship, field visits, industry visits, guest lectures,
and live projects. A ten week Summer Internship provides an opportunity for
students to apply their academic knowledge to real time management problems.
A 21-day-long field trip in first year and 15-day-long field trip in second year are
conducted during the programme to provide hands-on ground experience. Guest
lectures provide students with a chance to interact with representatives of the
corporate world and learn about the latest management practices.
The Summer Internship and Placements like always, have received tremendous
support from the Industry. The National event COALESCENCE, the guest
lectures, frequent interactions with alumni and other industry experts have attracted
participation from various companies like WWF, TERI, ITC, Ernst and Young, IL & FS,
Citibank to name a few.

TRAINING AND MANAGEMENT
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
(MDPs)
The dynamic nature of society and economy makes
it imperative for managers and administrators to
continuously upgrade their managerial skills to meet new
challenges, conflicts and changes in roles. The institute
since its inception is offering diversified action oriented
MDPs to managers, foresters and policy makers of
various government, non-government and forest-based
industries in India and other Asian countries.
RESEARCH
The thirst for knowledge never ends. The institute
constantly strives to develop frontiers of applied
research in the areas of development, environment,
forestry and natural resource management. Knowledge
transfer is done through classroom sessions and case
studies based on the learnings and findings of the
research.
The research projects are funded by various National
and International organizations like the Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Department
of Science & Technology, Ministry of Textiles (GoI)
State Forest Departments, ITTO, FAO, IDRC, DFID,
Ford Foundation, Ministry of Rural Development (GoI),
UNDP, GIZ and World Bank.
CONSULTANCY
The multi disciplinary expertise of IIFMs faculty makes IIFM ideally suited
to offer consultancy services in the areas of Forestry, Environment and
Natural Resource Management. The consultancy projects cater to a
wide range of clients and spread across areas such as Ecological studies,
Environmental-Economic studies, Socio-Economic studies, Human
Resource, Finance, Sustainable Resource Management and Certifications.
CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE
The Institute has a Regional Centre for National Afforestation &
Eco-development Board (RCNAEB) as a regional support unit for greening
the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. An International
Centre for Community Forestry (ICCF) has been set up at IIFM to
promote Sustainable Forest Management with community participation
through research, training and documentation. IIFM has at present ten
centres dedicated to special focus areas. These centres pursue specific
activities within the broad mandate of the Institute and provide research

IIFM regularly participates in various activities at the international level

INFRASTRUCTURE
CAMPUS
The Institute has a sprawling campus
spread across 230 acres located on a lush
green hill-top surrounded by water-
bodies on three sides. As a campus it is
also famous for its rich flora and fauna
with sighting of various wild mammals
and birds within campus. The building
complex includes the Academic Complex,
Library, Computer Centre, Hostel,

 PEDAGOGY
IIFM provides contemporary classroom learning using methods like case analysis and conceptual discussions,
along with review of literature on various topics given as assignments and presentations. Subjects like Natural
Resource Management in Rural Development (NRD) are taught from conservation as well as development
perspectives so that students can develop a holistic understanding of the critical issues related to natural resource
management and rural development. General Management courses of finance and marketing are taught through
both corporate as well as rural development perspectives. These methods encourage self-study among the
students which enhance interpersonal skills and inculcate the spirit of team work. The curriculum has effectively
expanded the horizon of knowledge and opportunities for the students in the field of sustainable development,
rural development, marketing, research and consultancy, financial services.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP
A ten week summer internship program with
various organizations such as financial institutions,
environmental & development organizations,
international and national NGOs, government
organizations and MNCs provides opportunities for
the students to apply academic knowledge to real
world managerial problems. This is the time when
students get exposed to the professional world.
IIFMites have succeeded consistently in strengthening
the bond between SI organizations and IIFM. This has
resulted in a relationship which extends beyond the
boundaries of internships and campus placements.
CASE STUDY
Classroom sessions are aided through various
methods, most important of which is case analysis.
The case studies used are from elite national
and international publications and cover not only
international cases but also covers the South
Asian perspective. Case studies cut across various
organizations and issues and therefore they are of
crucial in understanding various problems.
RESEARCH AND PRESENTATIONS
To make the learning experience self-motivated and
participatory, professors play the role of facilitators
by providing a foundation for discussion and leaving
the ground open for students research through
self-study and presentations. This method provides
an opportunity to explore the intricacies of a subject
area and ingrains the necessary aspects of time
management and collective thinking. It helps students
to develop good writing, presentation and analytical
skills. Many students have developed upon these
opportunities to publish their own research papers
and articles in journals etc.
VISITS
Two field visits, first after the 2nd semester and
second after the 5th semester are essential part
of the curriculum. These field visits of 15-20 days
help students to understand the various aspects
of sustainable development. This includes visits to
industries, rural and tribal areas, national parks, NGOs,
renewable energy projects, state forest departments,
plantations, eco-tourism sites, warehouses etc
across various states of India. These visits not only
give grassroot level knowledge to the students but
also empower them to take balanced decision in
professional career. Additionally, many other one-day
field visits are undertaken by the students which are
course specific.

CULTURAL CLUB
Cultural Club adds a lot of fun and
enthusiasm to students life by organizing
different festival celebrations (Eid,
Janmaashtami, Ganesh Puja, Dusshera,
etc) and cultural events like Ghazal
Night, Garba, Talent-hunt. In addition,
it organizes Kalpataru-the annual festival
which is a gala event, hosting various
literary, cultural and sports activities
itself, thus rejuvenating every dimension
of creativity of the students.

Activities of the Literary Club like panel
discussions, foreign language classes,
debates to name a few help students
in nurturing their intellectual mettle.
This helps the students expand their
knowledge at macro level and get
benefitted by other minds around them.

Nature Club activities are inclined
towards protecting the environment
and connecting with the society &
communities at large through street
plays, blood donation camps, cleanliness
drives, celebration of childrens day with
kids of an NGO and creating awareness
through events like photography
competition, T-shirt painting and clay
modelling.
SPORTS CLUB
Sports club at IIFM makes every effort
to provide ample opportunities to the
students to partake in their sports
events and games like athletics, cricket,
football, tennis, badminton, basketball,
volleyball, table tennis etc. Facing
competitions, team spirit, hard work,
leadership discipline, achieving goals are
just some of the individual qualities that
sports help develop. The club also gives
them a chance to represent the Institute
at All India Forest Meets.
MOVIE CLUB
Activities and events of the movie club
are not just informative but relaxing as
well. It is responsible for edutainment
of the students. It screens movies and
documentaries on weekends, runs
movie and documentary marathons,
shows open theatre movies and organize
quizzes.
MESS COMMITTEE
With active participation of the
students, the mess committee takes
care of the cuisine at IIFM. Every term
new members replace the old members
and get a chance to learn the intricacies
involved in operating the mess. They are
involved in activities such as deciding the
menu, checking accounts and managing
finances of the mess activities, doing
market research to get idea of the
best available prices for food items and
handling feasts on festive occasions.

COMMITTEE
To interact and remain connected with
the managers that IIFM has created, the
Alumni Network Committee makes
all possible endeavors to gather and
update information of its alumni while
also facilitating the students to take
advantage of this priceless asset by

Surviving in the wild, surmounting

evolve a suitable mental attitude to
face critical situations in life. Students
also get a chance to pragmatically

DRAMATICS CLUB
The Dramatics Club was initiated this
year in order to bring out acting skills
of the students. Performing on stage
enriches students with confidence and
helps them to open up. The dramatics
club exposes students and audience
to literature of playwrights that form
a treasure trove of our culture. Apart
from that, organizing events help
the students to learn management
skills. The club also provides students
exposure at national level where they
compete with other institutes.

ENVIROCONCLAVE
The Climate Change and Environmental
Core Competency Cell (C2EC3)
provides exposure to different aspects
of environment and allied domains.
The annual flagship event of C2EC3 is
the EnviroConclave which is a national
level conference. Professionals are
invited from industries as well as the
academia to share their knowledge and
experience in the respective fields based
on the theme of the year. The event
typically involves sessions by speakers,
panel discussion and workshops on
environment related themes like climate
change and biodiversity and reclamation,
remediation and restoration of
ecosystems. All throughout the year, the
cell also organizes interactive sessions
with people who have carved a niche in
the field of environment.
DAKSH
The Entrepreneurship Development
Cell was inducted in the Students
and Alumni Affairs Council of IIFM in
2009. The mega event of this cell is
an entrepreneurship summit called
Daksh and a national level B-plan
competition to facilitate young minds
towards innovative development

responsibility in corporate governance
and the importance of corporates

Communication Cell hosts an annual
one day national level conclave, CSR
India Conclave. The conclave attracts
participation of CSR heads from PSUs,
representatives from consultancy firms,
MNCs, NGOs, research organizations
and educational institutions. Previous
participants in CSR India Conclave were
E&Y, Mary Stopes International, LIC,
INTEL, TERI, Dr. Reddys Foundation,
Citi Bank, Jindal Steel to name a few.

INTERFACE
IIFM believes in the importance of giving
its students extensive practical exposure
alongside invaluable academic inputs to ensure
their holistic development. This ensures a
perfect mix of business acumen and academic
intellect. Such exposure is provided by means
of Summer Internship, field visits. Industry
visits, guest lectures and live projects. The
ten-week compulsory Summer Internship
provides an opportunity for students to
apply their academic knowledge to real
time management problems. A 21-day-long
field trip in first year and 15-day-long field
trip in second year are conducted during
the program to provide hands-on ground

with a chance to interact with representatives
of the corporate world and learn about the

PLACEMENTS 2015: A GLIMPSE

Continuing with the Institutes impeccable track record of excellence in academics and business, IIFM
Placements 2015 achieved 100% placement for PGDFM 2013-15 batch. This strong momentum continued
during the placement period with 32 organizations offering jobs through campus placement process. Total
number of jobs announced were 177, which was a 25.5 percent rise compared to last years placements.
IIFM concluded final placement for 2013-2015 batch of PGDFM by finally placing 73 students in 22
organizations. Organizations that took part in the Placement process include : IFMR, State Bank of India,
MicroSave, PRADAN, NCDEX, etc.

 Guidelines to offer
Summer Internship Project
The duration of Summer Internship is for a period of 10 weeks, (April 04 - June 10, 2016)
which includes the presentation of work and report submission at host organization.

1. To facilitate the student in selecting
a project, the organizations are
expected to give a brief description
of the work to be done including
deliverables by the student within a
period of 10 weeks.
2. Kindly note that not more than two
students are generally permitted to
do a single project. Also please kindly
indicate the qualification and language
requirements that are essential
or desirable, and whether the
requirements apply to one or both
the students taking up the project.
3. Please do not change the projects
or make substantial alteration in
the scope of the submitted project
proposal, as project detail is one
of the most important criteria for
choosing a project by the student.
4. Please mention the emoluments in
terms of stipend, accommodation,
travelling and other expenses to be
offered during the project as per the
organization norms.
5. Once with the organization, the
students will rely on the Reporting
Officer (R.O.) for guidance, and
hence please ensure that the officer
nominated as R.O. has sufficient time
for guiding students.
6. On completion of the project, the
students present their findings to the
organization and submit the draft
report before the relieving date from
the organization i.e. June 06, 2015.
7. All summer internship reports
submitted to IIFM can be publically
accessed in the institutes library.
8. Organizations are encouraged to
select the students for projects
based on the personal or telephonic
interview or directly short-listing the
candidates.
9. The organization should send
evaluation report of Internship
Project to Summer Internship Cell,
IIFM with the student in a sealed
envelope.
10. Kindly fill up the attached form and
mail/fax/email it to the address given
above.
