arrack craft as rhe ulrimare weapons in space warfare
pervaded rhe Bardefleer Tempesrus and plans were
made for fifteen Despoiler class bardeships.
However, as hisrory shows, rhe rrue bardeship was
nor ourdone by arrack craft and rhe program was
ended after rhe consrrucrion ofjusr rhree vessels. The
Despoilers originally saw lirde combar, being used
on long-range parrols rhrough largely unconresred
sysrems. Roughly rwo hundred and fifty years after
being laid down, rhe Merciless Dearh wenr missing
whilsr on rour rhrough rhe Amerikon Secror.
T
he Desecrator is an older design of
Imperial battleship. Commonly seen as
the flagship of Space Marine legions before the
Heresy, many of these ships went traitor during
the incident. Due to the paranoia of the
Inquisition, the remainder of these ships were
mostly destroyed, or otherwise disassembled
and components were used elsewhere,
although a few Space Marine chapters still use
the ship as a battlebarge today.

he grand cruiser was a precursor ro the
battlecruisers which are now more prevalent in
most Imperial fleets. Almost rivalling battleships in
its ability ro withstand damage and lay down a
barrage of fire, the grand cruiser fell out of favour
when the means for constructing sufficiently
powerful engines was lost (more recent! y built
engines were incapable of attaining a useful combat
speed). A few ancient grand cruisers can still be
found in reserve fleets of the Segmentum Obscuras.

CHAOS VESSELS
ot all crew aboard a treacherous vessel are necessarily willing participants. A corrupted captain may have turned little more than a handful
N of officers and quartermasters, whom he will conspire with to effectively enslave the ships remaining crew, turning them into unwilling
serfs to Chaos. Under such conditions, most inevitably succumb and turn to Chaos themselves, or else are broken and perish in their servitude.
Sometimes, however, the brave fight goes on. The traitor vessel, Desmeria, for example, was destroyed when intercepting forces from Battlefleet
Artemis managed to teleport a supply of melta-bombs to surviving loyalist sailors, holding out deep in the bowels of the Desmeria. In a
series of guerilla raids the valiant loyalists used the melta bombs to blast their way through to the ships anterior plasma coil before finally
sacrificing themselves in the Emperors name, overloading the plasma drive itself and committing their treacherous comrades to the oblivion
their actions so deserved.

Grand Cruiser came into existence.
There is no record of it ever being in Imperial
service. Naval experts theorize that the vessel
is a retrofitted Vengeance, however there is
no way to tell.

TRAITOR VESSELS

he Unforgivable earned its title during the 37th millennium, during an engagement
thar came ro be known as rhe Mordian Incident. Formally known as rhe Righteous
Fury, the vessel was accompanying fourteen Navy transports (canying thirty two thousand
Imperial guardsmen, fifteen hundred battle tanks and over ten thousand auxiliary staff and
vehicles) alongside the Justus Dominus, an Oberon Class Battleship and six escorts of
varying designation. The Righteous Fury reported a presence on its long range surveyors
and launched its fighters and bombers to intercept. However, this was nothing more than a
devious ploy for the Righteous Fury to launch all of its bomber wings. As they passed
alongside the Justus Dominus, the attack crafi: suddenly altered course, perpetrating a
devasraring bombing run against rhe barrlecruiser. Crippled by this surprise arrack, the
justus Dominus was unable to assist when the Righteous Fury turned its guns on the
smaller escorts, destroying four and forcing the two survivors to withdraw. The transports
were helpless against the traitorous cruiser and afi:er thirteen hours ofsuccessive attack runs
from its bombers, the Righteous Fury had destroyed all fourteen transports. Only three
thousand men survived by escaping in saviour pods and ether rafi:s and the loss of the army
led to the fall of Gestenbal ro ark invaders. Renamed the Unforgivable, the rogue cruiser
continued a rampage of wanton attacks that lasted for three millennia, until its destruction
by the Hammer of]ustice under Captain Grenfdd during rhe Port Maw Blockade.

B
efore being replaced by Lunar class cruisers, the Murder class cruiser was the mainstay
of Battlefleet Obscuras. Almost five hundred were built between the 33rd and 37th
millennia bur a proportionate number rurned renegade, joining the forces ofChaos. Armed
with several decks of the best plasma cannon batteries ever produced by the Adeptus
Mechanicus, this class is a formidable opponent at long range, with engines powerful
enough to keep our of range oflesser armed enemy ships. Several of these vessels combined
can cripple the largest battleships and it was a force formed from the Doom bringer, Steel
Fang and Monstrous rhat destroyed the Imperial battleship Relendess Persecution
(brought in from the Ardekka Sector) during the closing actions of the Gothic War.

T
he Heretic class light artillery cruiser is considered by Imperial Navy
historians to be the ancestor of the more common Dauntless class. The first
noted appearance of these ships is dated 476.32M in the Adeprus Mechanicus
archives. A fast support cruiser with huge firepower (compared to vessels of similar
size) was designed. Unfortunately, these deadly ships seemed to be prone to the
corrupting influence of Chaos. Later, this was summarised as probably due to
uncommon geometries and curves within the ship's hull structure. Within 120
years of service half of the Heretics had abandoned the Holy Light of the Emperor
and turned traitor. The remaining ships were destroyed by order of the
Inquisition. According to the Ordo Hereticus at least four of the renegade
Heretics have been destroyed in combat.

convoys. The first attacks took place in the Damacles sector, only 780 light years from
Monsk. However, over the last two centuries. these aUacb have been pezpetrated in an
ever widening area. It is widely believed 1bat squadrons of these vesaels are responsible
for many of the attacks onthe Imperium's scattered outposts throughout the Segmentum
ObSCUiaS, and many have been reported as far afield as Alphon in the Segmentum Solar
and Xanthus on the northern rim. Named Infidel class raiders by the naval hiemrchy,
these ships were used in great numbers during the Gotbic War, most notably in several
surprise aUacb against ships in arbit awaiting refitting and rearmament. In particular,
a 4-tltrong squadron proclaiming themselves as the Exterminators took part in the ill
fated Orar Raid during the Gothic War and were 1D reappear on tbirteen other occasions,
despite losing a total of tweDty ships or mare.

TRAITOR VESSELS
R
oving squadrons of Iconoclast class destroyers have been a constant peril to
shipping. Mainly used by pirates and other lawless bands, the Iconoclast is
similar in design to a variety of small escort ships turned out by almost every
shipyard. Although compact, they carry a fearsome amount of firepower for their
size and when encountered in numbers can be a threat to even a capital ship. In
fleet actions, they mainly engage enemy escorts, gun down attack crafi: and destroy
incoming torpedoes. The Carrion squadron, a band of renegades operating off the
Duran moon, became infamous for their skill at convoy attacks, daringly darting
amongst the convoy's defence vessels to destroy the transports before escaping.
The Lost Souls also achieved notoriety for their part in the Faustus Assault. It was
their vicious hit and run attacks that destroyed half of Faustus' orbital defences,
allowing the Excessive and Plagueclaw to bombard that world in preparation for
the subsequent landing.
