#1: Welcome to Cagayan de Oro Citya city rich in culture and history.

One of the most historically-rich

places in the city are the Capistrano-Burgos Streets. Much of the elite in the early days of Cagayan de Oro
resided in the area as it was in close proximity with the riverthe venue of merchant trading. This made
the place a home for certain famous and artistic structures.

COSMOPOLITAN

Our first destination is the Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel.

#2: When talking about striking architectural structures in the city, one cannot leave out the Cosmopolitan
Memorial Chapel. The beauty of the structure turns heads with the grace and glamor it exudes. Its white
paint gives the viewer a sense of purity, serenity, and sophistication.

#1: The Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel is located at Capistrano-Macahambus St, and it was founded in
1950 with its first branch opened in Cebu City by Mr. Renato Dychangco Sr. This Cagayan de Oro City
branch was opened in September of 1970 which included 3 chapel suites.

#2: The structure was influenced by the Greek architectural style. The architect incorporated Greek doric
columns at the anterior part of the structure.

#1: There is a hint of gothic revival in its sculpture of angels sitting on the Greek ionic columns along the
entrance. The gothic style can also be observed on the old-style lamp posts used on its entrance.
Additionally, the Victorian influence can be observed in the style of their gardening outside the building.

The Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel embodies the different ideals of the many architectural styles.
Indeed, an ideal place for healing experiences for the dead and their family.

#2: Our second destination is the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, located just a few meters from the
Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel.

SHRINE OF THE SACRED HEART

#2: The Shrine of the Sacred Heart, located at the Capistrano-Macahambus St. near the Cosmopolitan
Memorial Chapel, is a structure inspired by different architectural styles. It made use of different
components of the past, thus making a new design.

#1: The entrances at the front and along its sides features semi-circular arches which can be found in
Romanesque structures. Angels can be found at the entrance of the chapel and symbolizes the sanctity of
the chapel. Its walls, made up of stone, have a rough texture which can instantly be observed even without
touching the surface.

#2: It has a tin roof which is common in Filipino structures and houses due to its affordability and
availability.

#1: Onto our third structure, follow us as we look through the neighborhood for striking structure to fill
our eyes with beauty.
GREEN HOUSE

#1: When passing through Burgos St., one cannot help but notice the visually striking green house at the
side of the road. It captures the viewers attention not only because of its vibrant color but also because
of its unusual form. Unlike the typical Filipino houses around the area, the structure went for a unique
style that made it stand out from the rest.

#2: It is a postmodern architectural structure which does not follow any specific style of architecture. With
this said, it can also be considered as a post-modern structure. One feature that captures the eye of the
passersby is its mosaicking. It has a chaotic arrangement of differently-colored tiles attached on its walls
and support posts.

#1: The use of arcading can be seen in the structure. Arcading is used as a decorative feature in
Romanesque architectural style. Arcades are rows of arches used as walkways or shelters, and this feature
can be seen in the first level of the Green house.

#2: The use of the dominant striking colorsgreen and redform part of the reason how the structure
can be considered an example of post-modern architecture since one of its defining features is its
avoidance of the use of neutral colors.

#1: Its usage of pastel colors can also be caused by the influence of the Rococo architectural style. These
features all contribute to the eye-catching quality of the whole structure.

MODERN HOUSE

#2: Our next structure is the epitome of a simple modern architectural structure located at Kalambaguhan
St.

#1: The structure is simple and unnecessary details were eliminated. The dominant colors which were
incorporated in the structure were the neutral colors white, black, and gray.

#2: Materials at 90 degrees to each other were dominant features in the structure. It also made us of a
number of industrially-produced materials such as glass and steel.

#1: There was a clear visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines as geometrical lines governed most
of the structural elements.

#2: Lastly, the form followed its function. No unnecessary details were employed that did not serve a
certain function.

ANCESTRAL HOUSE

#1: Our last structure is the ancestral house located at corner Capistrano-Montalban St. Even though the
first level of the structure was now turned into a commercial area, the second level of the old structure
was retained and still houses a family.

#2: The dominant material used was wood which was highly accessible during the time of our ancestors.
This certain type of house was common especially during the reign of the Spanish rule in the Philippines.

#1: Geometrical shapesspecifically rectangles and squaresare dominant in the structure. However, it
should be noted that the jalousie windows were not elements dating back from the ancient times. They
were only incorporated later in time. Perhaps the windows were just wide open back in the day with
sliding frames used to close it.

INSIGHTS

#1: Architectural designs may or may not have significance in the engineering of the structures but its not
all meaningless and insignificant. The buildings dont necessarily need paint and sculptures to stand but
still they continue to feature and integrate it.

The design that add up to the beauty of the structures were not just added for the sake of it. The elements
incorporated into the structures are loaded with meaning which were derived from the artistic
perspective of the architect. Architecture as an art have signified meanings that the architects meant to
convey through his structures but it is up to the viewers how they shall interpret these meanings with the
knowledge they already possess.

The structure may also be not only for engineering and design purposes but also to cater the need of the
clients.
