CONCEPT OF EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE
Basically, Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the ability and skills to control,
perceive and evaluate the emotion itself. There are some arguments between the
researchers about the ability of Emotional Intelligence. Some said that, this ability can
be learned and strengthen while the others claim it is a gift and an inborn
characteristic that naturally exist in ones human being.

Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer had been the leading researchers when
they started their research due to Emotional Intelligence since 1990. They defined
Emotional Intelligence in their influential article Emotional Intelligence as, the
subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor ones own and others
feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to
guide ones thinking and actions (1990).

Salovey and Mayer had identified four different factors of Emotional


Intelligence; the perception of emotion, the ability reason using emotion, the ability to
understand emotion and the ability to manage emotion.
