Chap03 - Load and Stress Analysis

1. Sketch a free body diagram of eash element in the figure. compute the magnitud and the direction of
each force using an algebric method as specified.

Figure 1

2. For each of the plane stresses listed below, draw a Mohrs circle diagram properly labeled, find the
principal normal and shear stress, and determine the angle from the axis to 1 .

(a) x 12 MPa, y 6 MPa, xy 4 MPa cw

(b) x 10 MPa, y 18 MPa, xy 9 MPa cw
(c) x 30 MPa, y 10 MPa, xy 10 MPa ccw

3. A cantilever beam with a 25-mm diameter round cross section is loaded at the tip with a tranverse
force of 5 kN, as shown in the figure 3. The cross section at the wall is also shown, with labeled point
A at the top, B at the center, and C at the midpoint between A and B. Study the significant of the
tranverse shear stress in the combination with bending by performing the following cases.
(a) Assume L=250 mm. For the point A, B, and C, sketch three dimensional stress element, label-
ing the coordinate direction and showing all stresses. Calculate magnitude of the stresses on the
elements. Do not neglect the tranverse shear stress v . Calculate the maximum shear stress for
each stress elemnts.
(b) For each stress element in (a), calculate the maximum shear stress if the transverse shear stress
is neglected. Determine the % error for each stress element from neglecting the tranverse shear
stress.

4. A countershaft carrying two V-belt pulley shown in the figure 4. Pulley A receive power from a motor
through a belt win the belt tension shown. The power is transmitted through the shaft and delivered to
the belt on pulley B. Assume the belt tension on the loose side at B is a 15% of the tension on the tight
side.

(a) Determine the tension in the belt on pulley B, assuming the shaft is running at constant speed.
(b) Find the magnitud of bearing reaction forces, assuming the bearing act as a simple supports.
(c) Draw a shear-force and bending-moment diagram for the shaft. If needed, make one set for the
horinzontal plane and another set for the vertical plane.
(d) At the point of the maximum bending moment, determine the bending stress and the torsional
shear stress.
(e) At the point of maximum bending moment, determine the principal stresses and the maximum
shear stress.

5. The centilever bar in the figure 5 is made from ductile material and statistically loaded with Fy 1 kN
and Fz Fx 0. Analyse the stress situation in the small diameter at the shoulder at A by obtaining
the following information.

(a) Determine the stress element at the crossection A. Neglect the transverse shear at this location.
(b) For the critical stress element, determine the principal stresses and the maximum shear stress.
