Vera Brittain
Vera Brittain (18931970) was an English feminist writer best remembered as the author
of the best-selling memoir Testament of Youth. In it she recounts her experiences
during World War I and the beginning of her journey towards pacifism. This extract
describes the moment she learnt of her brothers death.
Compare Vera Brittains book with the war poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried
Sassoon, examples of which can be found in this Anthology.
Oxford University has a collection of Vera Brittains work which can be seen in their
