Millicent Atkins School of Education: Common Lesson Plan Template

PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson:

VA:Pr5.1.4 Identify exhibit space and prepare works of art including artist statements, for
presentation.
VA:Cr2.1.4 Create personally satisfying artwork using a variety of artistic processes and
materials.
List the Learning Objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson. Use the following format:
Students will be able to

Students will be able to create a 3-D Dr. Suess land out of pipe cleaners, paper, toilet paper
rolls, and many other materials. Students will use three different types of materials and need
to make four different paper structure designs. They will base these designs off of the
architect, Frank Gehry and his many works.

Describe how the objective is relevant to students lives.

This is relevant to the students lives because they will be understanding how to use space in
art and using different varieties of artwork. Students also interact with architecture everyday
so it is necessary to have some background knowledge on it.

List the words relevant to the content area that you will either introduce and/or review
during your lesson.

Shapes, scoring, fringe, accordion, cubes, architecture, attachment.

List the materials you will need to teach the lesson.

Construction paper, pipe cleaners, scrap book paper, toilet paper rolls, tissue paper, glue, scissors,
markers, crayons, tape.
ASSESSMENT
Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to measure students level
of understanding toward the learning objective(s) prior to teaching the lesson.

We will be assessing the students by having them practice scoring, fringing, folding, and a few other
techniques that they will be using on their final project. We also will show something that is 2
dimensional and something that is 3 dimensional to show students the difference and then hold up
more and have them guess which is which.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson pre-assessment. (if applicable)

Is your pre-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?

Describe the timeline as to when you plan to administer the pre-assessment?

(Recommended timeline is a minimum of two days prior to teaching your lesson).

We will administer the pre assessment before the lesson on the same day.
Create and insert a table/chart/graph that shows the pre-assessment data results. (if
applicable)
Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.
Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have demonstrated they
know) will be used to design the lesson objectives, instruction, and post-assessment.

We will watch the students practice and visually see if they have mastered the skill or where
they might need more help. They will need to show us four different techniques.
Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment you will
use to measure students level of understanding toward the learning objectives after teaching
the lesson.

Is your post-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?

APPENDIX: Include a copy of a Key/Product (completed by you, the teacher) which provides a
model of the desired outcome.

Is your key included at the end of this lesson plan?

TECHNOLOGY
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to incorporate into the
lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.

We will be using the smart-board to present our slideshow to start off our lesson.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to meet the needs
of all learners and accommodate differences in students learning, culture, language, etc. *
Be sure that these accommodations are based on what you identified/described in your
contextual information (Task I).

We will follow the students IEP and we will demonstrate and model for the students so that they
have many examples to look at. If a student is having trouble they will be put with a partner to work
on the project as a team.

MANAGEMENT
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student
behavioral/developmental needs in order to keep students on task and actively engaged
throughout the lesson.

We will walk around observing students and keeping them on task. We will be assisting them if they
need help and we will be answering any questions that they have. We will break the students into
two groups to show paper techniques. Once they have finished at a station they will switch to the
other one.

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
I Do
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome of learning objectives)
Describe how you will activate student interest and present the learning objective in an
engaging way (this is your lesson opening).
To start out our lesson we will be introducing the students to the artist, Frank Gehry, that gave us the
idea for our project. We will have a short presentation about the artist and what he designs. We will
tell them a few facts about the artist and about his background. We will then read a Dr. Seuss book of
the students choice.
Describe how you will communicate (to students) how the objective is relevant to their lives.
We will explain to students that it is relevant to their lives because they will be learning how to use
space in different varieties and how these modeling techniques are used, in a way, in architecture to
come up with ideas.
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to model/explain/demonstrate the
knowledge and skills required of the objective. (cite theories/theorists)
We will be modeling the strategies for the students to be able to see and understand what we expect
of them. We also know that Kolb has theorized that children learn better through experiences and by
actually doing a task rather than just being told how to do it.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on to guided
practice.
We will ask students if there is any other questions before moving on.
We Do
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to
practice the skills and content needed to meet the learning objective(s).
We will have students make some of the 3-D shapes on a smaller piece of paper so that they
understand and know what is expected on their final project. We will first show them how to fold the
paper and attach it to the flat paper. Examples would be laid out on the table.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on to independent
practice.
We will walk around and make sure all students are understanding how to fold and attach the paper.
Before moving on we will ask if students have any questions. We also will visually assess how the
class is progressing. We will go over the requirements on the rubric.
You Do
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills
required by the lesson objectives? (this is the post-assessment)
Students will be creating their own Who land. They will have a flat piece of construction paper and
will be attaching different types of materials to their paper to give it a 3-D effect. They will have to
use three different materials and four paper structure techniques. It is the expectation that the paper
will be filled at the end and the students will color or use different colored paper to have designs and
textures.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of your post-assessment.
Is your BLANK COPY of the post-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?
Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective and any skills/content that were
taught in an interactive manner (whole/small group, etc.).
We will explain to students once again that they will be able to use space in art by using different
varieties of artwork.

ANALYZE
(This portion may only be done after the post assessment is collected/scored.)
Describe the results of the Post-Assessment and be sure to address the following:
Students progress from pre-to-post assessment. (if applicable)
Factors that may have influenced the post assessment results.
How the results of the post assessment highlight what areas of the lesson will require
re-teaching (if any).
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph (below) that shows the post-assessment data results.
If you used the same document for both the pre and post assessments, it is strongly
encouraged that you show the comparison.

Description:

REFLECT
List and describe two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction
(successes).
One success was that the lesson was set up so that the students could have a maximum amount of
creativity and there was no right way to do this project as long as the students met the requirements.
Another thing that went well was when demonstrating to students the different paper techniques we
split them into groups because teaching in smaller groups is easier for students to understand what is
being asked of them.
List and describe two things you feel were challenges during the planning, implementation
and/or assessment of the lesson.
One challenge was that it was hard to get students to use their time wisely and fill the entire paper
within 40 minutes. We also felt it was a challenge to get students to branch out and use new paper
techniques instead of just doing the simple ones.
List and describe two ideas for redesign you would make if you were to teach this lesson
again.
If we would do this lesson we would read a book by Dr. Suess before we started since we
didnt the first time we did it. Also, we would show more techniques before and raise the
requirements for how many techniques they had to use and introduce more materials.
Lastly, we would make it a requirement to use a large sheet of construction paper and make
the students have it be full.
