Primer
TM by Sandy Feldstein and Larry Clark

Welcome to The Yamaha Advantage Primer

We are happy that you chose to play an instrument. The Yamaha Advantage Primer is designed to get you off to
TM

the right start. It contains a variety of music and all of the information you will need to quickly become a proficient
musician. If you have a computer, you can visit www.yamahaadvantage.com, a Web site designed to help you learn
more and have more fun.
The CD accompaniments included in this book are recorded by a great band. The CD will also give you an example
of how your instrument should sound as well as will provide hours of enjoyable play-along experiences.
Have a great time making music.

About Your Book

The Yamaha Advantage Primer is designed to look like a computer screen like an Internet Web site.
The buttons at the top of each page show the concepts you will learn throughout the book. Everything new
at the top of the page is presented with a colorful drop-down menu.
Take time to read through the proper assembly instructions on page 2. It is important, however to wait to
assemble you instrument for the first time until you are instructed to do so by your teacher.

Caring for Your Flute

Assemble, tune, clean and lubricate your instrument for the first time under the guidance of your teacher.

Assembly
Taking care not to apply pressure to the
main body keys, attach the foot joint to
the body with a gentle twisting motion.
Attach the head joint in the same
Embouchure
manner, using the marks on each
hole
joint as a guide.

Head Joint Care for the Interior of the Flute

Cleaning the Body and Pads
Insert the corner of a clean cotton cloth through the
small hole at the top of the cleaning rod. Wrap cloth
around the rod, making sure no metal parts are
exposed.
Insert gently into foot , body and head joints
individually, and twist.
When drying a pad, insert cleaning paper between it
and the tone hole and press down lightly, carefully
pulling the paper away.

Care for the Exterior of the Flute

For daily care, wipe the entire length of the body with a polishing
cloth, being careful not to apply pressure to the keys. Wipe down
the keys, taking care not to scratch them or damage the pads.
Middle Joint Silver-plated instruments should be polished using a specially
(Body) treated cloth

Cleaning the Tone Holes

Use a tone hole cleaner to clean the space under and between
the keys.

optimum playing condition,
have it cleaned and inspected
by a qualified repair technician
annually.

Advantage Foundations 3

Getting started
Sit up straight on the edge of a chair
with your feet flat on the floor.
Keep thumbs straight, fingers curved
and close to the keys.
Flute should be angled slightly down
with elbows out.

Making your first sound

Using only the head joint;
Cover the end with your right hand.
place the head joint on your chin so
that the hole is covered slightly by
your lower lip.
Form your lips as if saying too.
Take a full breath. Exhale across the
hole and play a long steady tone.

Tuning
Pitch is affected by temperature,
so warm up the instrument before
playing by blowing air through it.
To tune, pull head joint slightly away
from the body. The length you pull the
head joint out depends on individual
preference and method of playing.
