people respond differently to food. Therefore, food choices that
are good for one person may not be good for another.
One source of such variability is our microbiome the collection

Each of us has a unique microbiome, which is affected by what

Will this change everything?

Israel is unique in having a National Institute for Personalised Medicine, housed at the world-famous Weizmann Institute.
Now the latest research from Israel might, just might, be the final push that nutritional research needs to step out of the Stone Age. Especially
as it was featured on the front cover of Cell, one of the worlds leading journals.
Until now, nutrition researchers have just ignored everything we know about nutrigenetics, nutrigenomics and epigenetics. They carry on
regardless, trialling, testing and systematically reviewing diets and nutritional interventions as if one size fits all and disregarding, even, the
concept of biochemical individuality floated by Dr Roger Williams 60+ years ago.
Now we have the Weizmann Institute weighing in. It wasnt just the focus and scope of the research that was groundbreaking, but also
the manner of gathering information. They tracked blood sugar responses to more than 46,000 meals using embedded monitors. They
investigated changes in the microbiome. They recorded sleep and physical activity. And no wonky, three-day diet recalls here the 800

The Weizmann scientists put it this way:

Blinded by science: practising

nutrition as if evidence mattered
CAM contributing editor Miguel Toribio MaTeas, BANT chairman, sets us up for the New Year with
a look at the professional backlash against evidence-based scientism, and previews the launch of a
new Functional Dietetics curriculum.

I
f you are a social media user, particularly
a Twitter fan, you may have noticed a
growing trend Ive spotted in the last few
months. Increasing numbers of frustrated
healthcare professionals, including
medical doctors and dietitians, have publicly
raised their concerns about a group of very
vocal members of their own professions for
whom science and evidence are the most
valuable part of human learning.
This latter group of serial tweeters are
keen to let the world know that they believe
in the universal applicability of the scientific
method, and that empirical science constitutes
the most authoritative worldview. They take
this to the point where theyre quite happy
to exclude any other viewpoints, particularly
those that cannot be confirmed by large scale
randomised controlled trials which have then
been included in a systematic review.
Any piece of scientific and clinical
knowledge that doesnt make it to the tiny top
of this evidence-based medicine pyramid is
simply not accepted as true, hence the current
conflicts in the interpretation of evidence.
Only last month I had an interesting, mildly
heated Twitter debate on detoxification
with a well-known dietetics professor. He
is quite obviously a highly intelligent man,
but couldnt agree with me that inducing the
activity of detoxification enzymes by means
of nutritional substrates (food, nutritional
supplements etc.) was necessary at all. He

Cystic fibrosis researchers
discover how Candida
defends against bacteria
Researchers at the University of Toronto examined
fungi in the mucus of patients with cystic fibrosis and
discovered how Candida albicans has evolved to defend
itself against neighbouring bacteria.
Fungi have a staggering impact on human health,
infecting billions of people around the world and
killing 1.5 million every year thats in the range of
tuberculosis and malaria, says Prof Leah Cowen,
University of Toronto Molecular Genetics professor
and Canada Research Chair in Microbial Genomics and
Infectious Disease. And yet, they are underappreciated
and not well understood.
For this study (PLOS Pathogens, 2015. DOI: 10.1371/
journal.ppat.1005308), researchers analyzed 89 mucus
samples from 28 cystic fibrosis patients, using both
high-throughput genetic sequencing as well as culture-
based analysis. Candida albicans was predictably

The EPFL laboratory has shown that

the anti-inflammatory activity of intestinal
helminths involves cross-talk with the
microbiome. The researchers looked at the
effects of helminths that infect pigs. After
chronic infection with the helminths, they
discovered that the animals metabolism had
been changed drastically: specifically, they
produced increased levels of short-chain
fatty acids. These SCFAs produced by the
microbiome can activate a family of receptors
that in turn influence the immune system.
The receptors are also known to contribute
to certain functions and malfunctions of the
colon, and are even involved in modulating
allergic airway disease.
The same results were found when they
monitored cells in the immune system of
