Overview
Required Textbook
The main objective of this course is to build academic English skills in order
to successfully communicate in academic settings. Students will use Gramer & Ward (3) (2015) 2nd Ed.
educational language learning materials designed to develop their professional Q:Skills for Success / Reading and
communicative and interactive skills. Course activities are designed to develop Writing
all four language skills reading, writing, listening and speaking, with a focus New York: Oxford University Press
on discussion and oral interaction. Practice makes perfect, so these classes are ISBN: 978-0-19-481902-2
designed to let you discuss and think critically about interesting topics and
common issues found within modern society.

Goals
Build academic English skills in discussions, presentations,
and writing for academic purposes.
Improve all four areas of academic English skills: Reading /
Writing / Listening / Speaking
Develop critical thinking skills
Increase awareness and understanding of social and global
issues
Develop skills which will carry on outside of the classroom
walls

Course Requirements
Attendance
80% attendance is required to pass the course (up to 9 class hours
are excusable with absence notes)
If absent from class:
o -10 attendance points unless an absent note is provided.

Participation will be included in your grade. Read, write, listen, and SPEAK
in English. You can only improve your English by using and practicing the Quizzes 5%
