The youth residents of Hampton Homes and Bright Street received a

wonderful back to school treat this year! On Friday, August 18th at 2:00
p.m., former Hampton Homes resident, Joyce Johnson, and her
Email scannon@texarkanaha.org
granddaughter, Shanice Johnson, gave back to Joyces neighborhood.
Resident youth of these properties were given new backpacks to start their
school year with. And not only did they receive backpacks, but they also received school Housing Authority of
supplies! These wonderful donations to our youth was made possible through the generous Texarkana, Texas
and caring hearts of the Texarkana Independent School District, Christ Nations church, and @haoftexarkanatexas
HATT employee, Noratee Byrd Johnson (Mechanic for Hampton Homes/Bright Street). With her own personal deisre to see
her former apartments youth taken care of, Ms. Joyce personally knocked on resident doors and asked the names of the kids
who lived at each apartment who were starting school this Fall. After successfully obtaining the donations, she and Shanice
picked everything up and orchestrated the
event with the help of Quanica Ware
(Assistant Manager for Hampton Homes/
Bright Street). When asked what Ms. Joyce
thought about the generous donation
received, she couldnt stop saying, This is
still my neighborhood. God is GOOD!
Thank you to everyone! See more photos
of the event on HATTs Facebook page

FROM AMBERLY SHAW, WESTLAWN FAMILY ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST
SEPTEMBER 4th: LABOR DAY HOLIDAY- NO SCHOOL
SEPTEMBER 6th: district-wide leader in me parent workshop luncheon
SEPTEMBER 21st: 7 Habits of successful families workshop series for westlAwn
Westlawn Elementary is growing future leaders as a Leader In Me School. Leader in Me is a
school-wide program based on Franklin Coveys book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It
teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students. These include skills such as being
responsible, setting goals, honesty, teamwork, and renewal. Leader in Me creates a school
where every child can be a leader. Over the course of the school year, Westlawn students will
learn about the 7 habits and use them daily. Westlawn families will be able to increase their
childs learning of the 7 habits at home through school-home projects. Families can also take
part in the 7 Habits of Successful Families workshop series, which teaches how to use the 7
habits to strengthen the family unit and improve important relationships. During the first six
weeks, we will focus on Habit 1: Be Proactive. This habit teaches students about self-control.
They are responsible for their behavior, words, and attitudes.
On September 21st, we will kick off our 7 Habits of Successful Families workshop series for our Westlawn families. The event
will be from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the Westlawn cafeteria. We will provide both food and childcare. Those who come will learn
more about Leader in Me and how to use the 7 habits at home. We will start with Habit 1. Keep an eye out for sign up forms
to be sent home, or call the school for more information.
All TISD families are invited to attend the first district-wide Leader in Me Parent Workshop Luncheon on September 6th at
11:30 at the TISD Services Building at 1600 Waterall Street. This series will cover the same material covered in our workshops
on our campus. They are starting with Habit 2.

The Hampton Family Gives Back

Honoring The Memory Of Everlyn Hampton
On Saturday, August 26th, the family of late Hampton Homes resident, Everlyn Hampton, united together with current residents
in order to celebrate their loved ones legacy. The Hampton Family arrived not only to keep Ms. Hamptons memory alive, but to
also give back the love that she was known for giving the neighborhood. And the love was shown, indeed, by the family providing
& serving refreshments to the residents and donating backpacks to the Hampton Homes and Bright Street youth. Thank you!
