Student: Alice Lui

Alice was born in Albany, Oregon on April 8, 2001. Her parents Michelle and Paul came

from China to the United States in 1993. Alice has one older sibling. They are six years apart.

Her older sister is currently in college. In 2001, Alices grandparents Feng and Chiu moved to the

United States to take care of her while her parents worked. Since Alice was raised by her

grandparents her first language was Cantonese. Alice had a hard time communicating with her

peers during kindergarten but she got better at speaking English in first grade. In 2008, Alice and

her family moved to Las Vegas. The reason why they moved to Las Vegas was because her

mother Michelle knew that the company she worked for was going out of business. She thought

it was a great time to move to a big city. Alices father Paul is a chef and works in the afternoon

to midnight. Her Mother Michelle is a dealer and works the graveyard shift. Alice is currently

into Korean dramas and animation. In her free time, she likes to draw or listen to music.
The physical development for Alice is considered healthy for her age. Alices height is 5ft

and she weighs 91 pounds. According to the BMI calculator for children and teens Alice has a

healthy weight (BMI Percentile Calculator). Alice is a sophomore in high school. She is

currently attending the West Career and Technical Academy. This school is one of the top magnet

schools in Las Vegas. The West Career and Technical Academy has an intense curriculum,

because of that she is always sleep deprived. Alice gets six hours of sleep or less on school days.

The Sutter Health Palo Alto Medical Foundation states that girls usually develops between the

age of 13 to 16 years old depending on the age the hit puberty (Brown,2013). Alice is still in the

growing process. Alice is not an active person but she does like to go jogging sometimes on the

weekends. During the summer, Alice would goes swimming with her cousin at the community

pool.
Emotion development means to develop long lasting mutual and healthy relationships

(Headlee). Alice has a positive relationship with her grandparents and she was raised by her

grandparents after she was born. Alices grandparents have always been there for her. However,

there is a communication problems between them. As Alice grew older she started to speak more

English and less Chinese. Alices relationship with her parents is not bad but it is not great either.

Parents should listen to your childs feeling, talk to your child and maintain a positive

relationship (social and emotional changes in adolescence, 2014). Alice does not have a

healthy relationship with her parents. Alice does not see her dad much and hardly talks to him

since he works seven days a week. Alices mother is around but she does not speak to her mother

often. When they do speak to each other her mother criticizes Alices grades. Alices mothers

high expectations cause anxiety and stress for Alice. In the last three years Alice has not been

sleeping well. In 2016, Alice was diagnosed with depression. She was sent to a program to get

help with her problems. However, Alices parents do not believe in therapy and took her out of

the program immediately. They thought it was for insane people and if they let her stay in the

program it would ruin her future. Alice convinced her parents to let her see a therapist.
Philosophical development, also known as moral development starts at an early age for

children, Kohlbergs has six stages of moral reasoning (Snowman and McCrown, 2015). Alice

is between conventional morality and post conventional morality. Alice understand the concept

of right and wrong. However, Alice is still 15 years old and does not fully grasp the perspective

of others. Meaning what Alice might believes is right others might think it is wrong. Kohlbergs

stage four is law and order orientation (Snowman and McCrown, 2015). Which means to

maintain social order, fixed rules must be established and obey and must respect authority

(Snowman and McCrown, 2015). Alice is at stage four because she grew up in a traditional

Chinese home. In her family, she must obey the rules and respect authority. Alice was taught that

family always comes first.

Alice is not a social butterfly, and she is an introvert. At her age, she is still going through

social development. Adolescence starts social development between childhood and adulthood

(social development during teen years). Alice has always been a shy and quiet girl that does

not like to interact with people. She does not have much self-esteem and likes to think more

about the negative outcome instead of the positive one. According to studies friendship with

others can promote positive relationship between them (social development, n.d). Alice has

two close friends that she gets along with. Sometimes Alice hang outs with them at the mall or

movie theater. Most of the time she just stays home and wants to be left alone. Every other day

she will go to her uncles house to eat dinner and play with her younger cousins.
Alices intellectual development is above standards academically. Alice is an honor

student with a grade point average of 3.8. Currently she is in the Biomedical program aiming to

be a psychiatrist. According to the West Career and Technical Academy they are ranked as 3rd in

2017 best public high school in Nevada (Explore West Career and Technical Academy). Alice

is right on track for graduation with an advanced honors diploma. Alice is a linguistic learner.

She likes to learn with written and spoken instructions (Howard Gardners multiple

intelligences). Right now, her favorite class is English. She enjoys reading and interpreting

stories. Alices favorite novel is the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Her biggest weakness is

math. Alice has a hard time understanding math concepts. Based on test scores, Alice is above

standards in reading and writing. However, her math scores are below standards. Currently Alice

has tutoring twice a week for math.

In conclusion, Alice is an honor student on track for graduation. She is a shy girl that

does not like to express herself. I feel that Alices emotional and social development can develop

more in a more positive way. She should continue to see her therapist for counseling because

talking to somebody would help her. It could help her be more open with people and she can

express herself more. Also, she should hang out with friends more instead of staying at home

most of the time. Also, that way Alice can meet other people and befriend them. I am concern

about Alices relationship with her parents. Once she can express herself she can be more open

with her parents. Overall, Alice is a unique child with potential for her future.
