An Appreciation on the Basic Concepts of Art

The Inconvenient Truth

1. Subject

What is the subject being applied in your artwork and Why?

My artwork falls on the category of nature. It is a decaying human face, with nature covering it. It symbolizes
an inconvenient truth that if we dont change our ways, our planet might end up devastated so us humans. Our world
is being destroyed inevitably which became a disturbance for everyone. Thom Hartmann said that human culture
thinks that, we are superior life form on this earth but truth is we are part of nature. Indeed, we are nature. We cannot
survive without it. Even if we do, like the technology is promising us in the future, I dont think its humanly any longer.

2. Content

What message, idea, feeling, theme, and belief that you want to convey in your artwork and Why?

Were always part of nature. But through the years, particularly the birth of the industrial revolution, gradually
humans are separating from it. Boundless development and increase, population growth, the boom of technology, in
fact theres nothing erroneous to these ideas but not considering sustainability until the outcome prevails
desertification, melting of the polar ice caps, drought, hurricanes, overflows.

By mimicking natures blueprints, its still possible to form an improved way of life than to lose the planet
rather. As future architecture practitioner, its my responsibility to design a structure that would not be part of the earths
misery. Learning as many sustainable practices as I can today would help me shape the future through imagination.
Similar to number of green architects of our time, I also dream of being a part of it. I would be portion of earths
salvation. Participating to different organization that promotes sustainable practices would be my zeal for service to
nature. With this artwork, I convey an alarming message that we should do our part as residents of this planet to be
responsible enough before its too late.

3. Medium
What material/s or mean/s did you use in your artwork and Why?

Art is everything and anything. Limitation isnt acceptable in creating an art, I suppose, therefore I used mixed
media. I want to showcase my ideas through various forms of rendering materials with the intention expressing my
imagination at liberty. The drawing was first draft using a pencil. Followed by watercolor for the base color. Lastly,
technical pen, colored pencil and marker was used to enhance the drawing.

4. Technique

What technique did you apply in your artwork and Why?

Art can be in any form. In architecture, we are trained to used either manual or digital drawings. However, I
prefer to use manual drawing in a reason that it exert more effort than of digital art. Manual art in my opinion is also
more flexible, more realistic, and express more of artist feeling for it is directly created by the artist with his hand.

Moreover, I used various techniques in the presentation, it was first outline through drawing technique. It was
then paint through the use water color. Lastly, it was finalized through drawing once more.

5. Style

What style did you apply in your artwork and Why?

Awesome, ridiculous, unusual, far-fetched, suggestive, odd or enamoring; whatever words pop in ones mind
when one sees a piece of Surrealist art, odds are despite everything you have some thought that what one is taking a
gander at, is in fact, Surrealist art - or no less than, a nearby masterful connection. I found surrealism as the most
interesting among other styles. I also never had a chance to express my imagination in this kind of technique so I take
it as opportunity to try this Surrealist art.

Personal Reflection:
1. What did I feel when I was making my own artwork and why?

Restlessness overpowers my inner self each and every time I read articles or listen to reports about global
warming, deforestation, and other man made destroying factors that effects the earth. There are things, Im eager to
change however I dont have enough knowledge to execute not to begin with. Worst, I do nerve to turn the table and
stand up for what is rightful thing to do. Few things, like lessening electricity usage, avoiding spray products, using
paperless note-taking etc can do a slight modification. However, sometimes these small things are hard to surrender.
How would transform my ways? How could I turn out to be less self-centered? Honestly, I do not have an idea.

2. What are the different realizations I have discovered in the activity?

An ancient Chinese proverb states: "If we do not change our direction, we are likely to end up where we are
headed." I want to raise awareness of our last chance to transform our actions for a healthy and better forthcoming. My
artwork shows how human activities brought to a kind of planet we acquired nowadays our living, our influence in the
earths ecosystems, and what habits we must change to revise this.

Global warming, deforestation etc. are few major challenges we experience, the death of the seas, the
melting of the poles, the trapping of greenhouse gases, the devastation of the forests; all of which are necessary but
the most alarming is the result of these symptoms: the devastation of earth and the only chance we have for survival,
the human brain. Since it was our mind that created the idea of the impending, thus humans are the only one who has
the ability to distinguish: future is affected by our movements.

However, are we too egotistical to take actions to the issue? Sustainable practices are now in the market but
majority arent still into it.
