a) Standing with heels together, toes apart.
Hands relaxed at sides. Bend at the waist
not looking up. Quickly down, slowly up.
b) Go down on left knee first, then right,
push forward on toes. Knees are on the
line. (during exhale)

c) Slide hands down thighs to floor. Make a


triangle with hands on the floor. Bend
forward bringing head to about six inches
from floor. Come back up slowly.

d) Slide back on your toes, bring the right


knee up and stand. (on an inhale)

d. Shte grabs ukes elbow and keeps

e. Shte rotates the elbow forward as he


shuffles forward at about 20 degrees
to the right, causing ukes shoulder to
rotate down.

f. When ukes arm has rotated


sufficiently so that uke and shte are
palm to palm, shte grabs ukes wrist.

g. Uke goes down on the right knee, left

circular to eye level applying the pin.

bringing his own hand around palm down
while back fisting uke with the right hand.

d. Shte makes a 45 degree pivot to the back


while circling ukes hand to eye level.

e. Shte applies second control. Ukes tegatana


(or pinky side edge of the hand) should be
verticle.

f. Uke goes down on his left knee.

g. Shtes left hand goes down to ukes elbow


while the right hand stays on the back of
ukes hand. Shtes weight should be above

h. Shte does a 180 degree pivot and then body


changes while pushing uke in front of him
bringing uke to the ground.

i. Shtes left hand will adjust ukes elbow


to allow shte to pivot on his knees
bringing the right foot toward ukes head.
Shte is on the toes of his left foot with his
hip near his heal.

j. Ukes hand is palm up in the crook of


shtes elbow. Shte is grabbing His own
dogi at the opposite shoulder. Shte shifts

been since eighth kyu. In this test it is important that
you get deeper into the movements, that your body
stays in alignment (kamae), that your weight stays
forward, and that you begin to develop your own

a. Right stance kamae. (migi ai-hanmi kamae)

b. Uke strikes from the center of his forehead


to the side of shtes head.

c. Shte blocks by raising both hands with a


bend in the elbows (elbow power) and high
enough not to block vision while protecting
the head.

d. As the strike comes, shte pivots backward


on the right foot extending the left arm to
bring ukes strike down to chest level and
striking with the right hand to ukes face.

e. Shtes slides his left hand down ukes arm


and then grabs ukes thumb and base of
hand.

f. Shte brings ukes hand forward to shtes


center line then shuffles forward and cross
steps bringing arms into elbow power. Shte
keeps weight forward and hands at forehead

the forehead and extending the arms. At
about 20 degrees from front shte cuts down
with his arms like a sword. Bring the back
foot forward without raising the hands.
Shuffle forward to throw. Alternatively,
shte brings straightened arms over shtes
head during the body change and then cuts
down as the back foot shuffles forward.
Shuffle and throw.

h. Ukes elbow should be pointed straight up


with his arm close to his head before the
throw (not horizontal in chicken wing
fashion).

i. Uke steps back with the outside (left) leg


and does a back break fall.

bending the knee to about 130 degrees.
Shtes right foot should form a T with
ukes right foot. Shtes hands are palm up,
one chest high one at the waist, energy is
forward.

d. Shte cross steps to the back of uke while

ukes left shoulder. Shtes right hand is at
waist height.

e. Shte turns his hips to square shuffles in and


throws at a diagonal to ukes back. Shtes
hands are palm up.

c. Shte pivots 90 degrees to the rear. The


back leg is straight, the energy is forward.

d. Shte steps with his right foot to the back of


uke bringing his hands up the right at chest
level and the left at waist level.

e. Shte turns the hips to face uke while


cutting down with both hands. The throw is
at a diagonal to ukes back.

f. Uke does a back break fall.

d. Shte throws cutting straight down with his


arms. Ukes arm should be elbow pointed to
the ceiling. Shtes arms should be straight
but not locked.

been since eighth kyu. In this test it is important that
you get deeper into the movements, that your body
stays in alignment (kamae), that your weight stays
forward, and that you begin to develop your own
understanding of these movements. The challenge is
to look at each movement with the newness of the
beginner but with the depth of knowledge that you
have gained from your studies so far.

a. Shte and Uke begin in seiza.

b. Shte offers both hands.

c. Uke grabs from the side and pulls.

d. Flowing with ukes pul, shte opens his


knees and pushes the hips forward. Shte
raise his hands in a circular motion to ukes
arm pits and then onto his toes

e. Uke comes up out of seiza onto his knees.

f. Shte moves to the side on his left knee.

g. Shte engages his toes to push forward and


unbalance uke. Then shte shfts to the left.

h. When shte has ukes balance through


shifting left, he cuts down with both hands.

i. Using ukes energy from falling, shte


moves his lower body to position himself
along side uke.

(4) Ryote-mochi Tenchi-nage Ichi

b. Shte offers both hands. Uke grabs and


pulls.

c. Shte cross step forward with the left foot


in a circular movement around ukes right
foot. At the same time shte brings his left
hand forward and palm down while the
right hand circles up the ukes shoulder.

d. Shte then cross steps at a diagonal in back


of uke keeping his hands in front. End in
zanshin.

(Uke is spun around a little like a rag doll.)

e. Shte punches to ukes face then running the


knife edge of his hand up ukes collar shte
rotates his hips to face uke.

e. Keeping ukes hand at hip level, shte body


changes back rolling ukes hand over palm
down. Shte puts his other hand on the back
of ukes hand.

f. Shte shuffles forward and uses his right


hand to mow ukes hand and rotate it
down.

g. Uke does a jump break fall.

h. Shte rotates ukes elbow and pins.

(7) Shomen-uchi Sankajo Osae Ni

Front Strike 3rd Control Pin #2

a. Shte in left kamae, uke in right. (Hidari


gyaku-hanmi kamae.)

b. Uke strikes to shtes forehead. Shite blocks


by raising his right hand.

c. Shte catches ukes strike his right arm


crossed with ukes and grabs ukes right
elbow with his left hand.

d. Shte pivots 180 degrees rolling ukes


shoulder and bringing ukes arm down to
chest height.

e. Shtes right hand grabs ukes hand at the


first knuckle while shtes left thumb goes
into ukes elbow. Shte shuffles to the back
of uke by about 6 inches. Shte is looking at
the palm of ukes hand and ukes arm is at a
right angle.

f. Shtes left hand slides down to ukes


tegatana and rotates the hand to push the
little finger toward s the body but in back of
uke. Simultaneously shte pivots at least 90
degrees. (This is a forward rotation.)

g. (The third control grab is done between the


thumb and the little finger. The index finger
should be extended all other fingers
engaged.)

h. At the end of the rotation, shte brings uke


forward and then down in a circular motion.
Shte cross steps back with a punch to ukes
face, which uke blocks.

i. Shte cross steps back, shuffles to the side


and then turns and steps forward.

j. Shte sets ukes shoulder into the mat by


pushing forward. The third control pin is
maintained by keeping ukes hand turned
palm down.

k. Shtes right hand, which is at the elbow


rotates to the top of the arm and then slides
to the wrist. Shte brings ukes wrist up to
his own left shoulder.

l. Shtes left arm cuts across ukes arm at a


diagonal. Shte then shifts his weight
pushing ukes hand over his opposite
shoulder. Shte keeps on his toes and keeps
his hips low.

Starting in right stance kamae, cross step back and


sit down. Bring both hands to the right side of the
body as you kick the left foot over the right
shoulder. Push up with both hands, bring your head
up and stand up.

Starting in right stance kamae, sit down bringing


both hands to your right side and kick right knee
and the left foot over the right shoulder and stand up
as in number 1.

Uke kneels on one knee and extends arm. Shte


grabs over the top of ukes sleeve with the forward
arm and holds on.

Jumping off of the forward leg and rotating the back


(left) hand backward, shte lands slapping first with
the back hand and then gently landing on the left
side of the back not flat but in a continued rotation.
Then stands up.

a. Shte in left, uke in right stance kamae.


Hidari gyaku-hanmi kamae.

b. Uke strikes as shte blocks by raising his


lower hand.

c. Shte pivots 180 degrees while rotating


ukes shoulder.

d. Shte positions the base of his index finger


of his left hand over the radial bone at the
wrist.

e. Shte makes a 45 degree pivot backwards


while thrusting ukes elbow up.

f. Using ukes forearm as a sword, shte cuts


down on a diagonal as he pivots more that
180 degrees. Bringing uke down on his knee
and forearm.

g. Shte cross steps forward bringing uke all


the way down. Coming own to one knee,
shte shuffles forward to put ukes shoulder
into the mat.

h. Shte turns to face ukes side. Shtes back


hand rotates in front of the front hand then
shte brings ukes hand up to his left
shoulder.

i. Shte brings ukes hand over his far shouler


to pin.

Behind Both Wrists Grasp 1st Control Pin #1

a. Shte and Uke begin in right stance kamae


and perform hojo dosa movement.

(Shte and uke begin to strike. Uke strikes.


Shte blocks. Shte punches with the left
hand. Uke blocks by pushing shtes right
hand down onto her left. Uke then lets go
and goes around to the back.

b. Uke grabs both of shtes hands from


behind and pulls. Shte shuffles back at an
angle to the left while bending her wrists to
be palm up.

c. Shte brings her hands together in an egg


shape to about head height.

d. Cross-stepping back at an angle to be about


90 degrees to uke, shte cuts down with
both hands.

e. Shte then brings her back knee to a position


just behind her front calf and the knife edge
of the hand in back of ukes elbow.

f. Shte rotate his left hand to grab the back of


ukes hand.

g. Shte shuffles forward at a diagonal across


uke, using the back leg to push forward.
With the right hand shte brings uke down
to the knees.

h. Cross-step, cross-step, pin. Ukes shoulder


is down, more than 90 degrees from the
body. Shte is on the toes, hips near the
heels.
