Theworkwasoriginallyintendedasamereprefacetoacollectedvolumeofhispoems,explainingand
justifyinghisownstyleandpracticeinpoetry.Theworkgrewtoaliteraryautobiography,including,
togetherwithmanyfactsconcerninghiseducationandstudiesandhisearlyliteraryadventures,an
extendedcriticismofWilliamWordsworth'stheoryofpoetryasgivenintheprefacetotheLyrical
Ballads(aworkonwhichColeridgecollaborated),andastatementofColeridge'sphilosophicalviews.
InthefirstpartoftheworkColeridgeismainlyconcernedwithshowingtheevolutionofhisphilosophic
creed.AtfirstanadherentoftheassociationalpsychologyofDavidHartley,hecametodiscardthis
mechanicalsystemforthebeliefthatthemindisnotapassivebutanactiveagencyintheapprehension
ofreality.Theauthorbelievedinthe"selfsufficingpowerofabsoluteGenius"anddistinguished
betweengeniusandtalentasbetween"aneggandaneggshell".Thediscussioninvolveshisdefinition
oftheimaginationoresemplasticpower,thefacultybywhichthesoulperceivesthespiritualunityof
theuniverse,asdistinguishedfromthefancyormerelyassociativefunction.
