HOW THE NETWORK TRIED TO
BURY THE REAL UFO STORY.

Sometime ago, CBS had a news special with CBS news
correspondent Christopher Glenn and Carol Martin. The
nature of the shoW' was to show that all UFO sightings could
be explained.
Presented here is the preliminary analysis of the above
named CBS News Special broadcast, which was aired
December 4, 1976 on KDKA-TV channel2, Pittsburg, PA and
WTAJ-TV, channel 10, Altoona, Pa.
Copies of this report have been distributed to all persons
and organizations interested in UFO research.
These are direct quotes from the CBS-TV Show, and
rebuttal remarks are by Robert Goerman.
Glenn: Wait! I see we have something from correspondent
Carol Martin in the field.
Martin: That's right, Chris. This is Carol Martin out in Long
Island, N.Y., where an Unidentified Flying Object has just
passed overhead. Look at it! (Eerie sound effects and slow
motion footage of a "Frisbee" in flight).
Glenn: Well, it certainly looks like a flying saucer. Carol, what
do you supposed that is?
Martin: Wow! (acting surprised) Well, I guess it is a flying
saucer of sorts, but, most people would call it a... Frisbee.
Glen . Come on back, Carol. Let's take another (Carol Martin
suddenly appears in studio) ...look.
Martin: Hi, Chris!
Glenn: You sur.e get around.
Martin: You have to when you're tracking flying saucers.
Glenn: You know, it was a pilot named Kenneth Arnold who
saw something he couldn't identify back in 1947. He said it

was round, and he called it a flying saucer. He was the first to
use that name.
Rebuttal: Arnold saw nine discs flying in formation, like, he
said, "A saucer skipping over water." As a result of his
description, the newspaper headline writers coined the
phrase "Flying Saucer" which rapidly became the most
popular phrase to describe UFOs.
Martin: Well, we don't know what pilot Arnold saw, but we
know that this is a Frisbee. Still, if you did not know that, and
you wanted to believe that this was something from outer
space, well, I bet you could convince a lot of people.
Rebuttal: The illogical nature of the above statement borders
on propaganda. This example is far worse than simple
misrepresentation of fact; it uses a background of authority to
establish biased opinion as fact.
Glenn: You know, a lot of UFO's get reported that way.
Someone sees something and isn't exactly sure what it is.
They call the police. 'f'here's a story in the papers. People
read the story, and they start to see UFO's. And pretty soon,
everybody sees one.
Rebuttal: The "experts" try to slough off UFO sightings by
claiming that a mass hysteria builds up after a few reports
have been published. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
There is no time lag, no build up of sightings. (Example:
January 1st, 1975 UFO sightings in Illinois, where at least
three, possibly more, similar, if not identical objects, were
observed and dutifully reported by individuals by as much as
200 miles apart).
Martin: And maybe all that it was, was something simple,
that any scientist could explain.
Glenn: That's right! Now what do you suppose we'd do if we

opened our door tonight and looked out in the sky and saw
this? (Segway to visuals of Aurora Borealis)
Martin: Oh! (acting afraid and confused) I know what I'd do.
I'd slam the door and run back inside. What is that, Chris?
Glenn; This is the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Light
They're seen often in Alaska and Canada's Northwestern
Territories, and they are beautiful.
Martin: Mmmm, they certainly are.
Glenn: But if you couldn't identify this as the Northern
Lights, then seeing them in the sky could be very frightening.
Rebuttal: There has never been a single case In which a
UFO sighting has later been identified as aurora effects. The
least that CBS could do, if they truly wanted to be objective,
would be to stick to the known facts.
Martin: Now what's that, Chris? (Again acting confused)
Glenn: This is animated film of satellites, one of thousands of
man-made objects circling the Earth. (Close-up view of
sateiUte as seen from space with Earth in background).
Again, if you see it and don''t know what it is, it's aUFO. Until
someone, a scientist or a teacher, identifies it. And then it
becomes an IFO (Identified Flying Object).
Martin: I see, and because so many people might see a
satellite i[ld not know what it really is, they'd report it as an
Unidentified Flying Object; get's in the paper or on TV. And
pretty soon people report this UFO that's not a UFO at all.
Rebuttal: The animated view of the satellite was factual
enough, but it gives people a deceitful view of exactly what a
satellite looks like from ground level. In reality, no actual
form is ever seen, just the star-like source of light. Satellites
travel a very steady course through the field of stars. They

never stop nor change direction as many UFO's are reported
to do.
Glenn: That's right. There's even a name for that. It's called a
flap. A UFO flap. Most UFO sightings happen that way.
When everybody in the same area sees the same satellite or
meteor or the Northern Lights.
Rebuttal; According to CBS elite, the term "flap" is
apparently defined as a condition of spontaneous hysteria,
when known phenomena suddenly for no apparent reason
becomes "indentifiable." This is probably a take-off on the
original Air Force term, flap, which indicated a state of
general confusion. The actual meaning of the word.
flap, now connotes periods of time, in which large numbers of
UFO's are reproted, regardless of geographic location or
general descriptions.
Glenn: Hey Carol, where are you off to?
Martin: Well Chris, you said weather balloon, and
here... it...is! They are big... and they get bigger as they rise
high into the sky, eighteen miles hjgh in fact. And they carry
all kinds of equipment for measuring wind speed and
temperature...all to help us predict the weather. But here at
Fort Tauten, the National Weather Service launches over 700
weather balloons each year...and as we watch one go up, we
can see how many people might think weather balloons are
flying saucers from outer space.
Glenn: If you didn't know, that would be a UFO.
Rebuttal: According to the Air Force, weather balloons
account for less than 02.5 per cent of the total number of UFO
sightings. More accurate estimates place the number below
the 01.5 per cent mark.

Kenneth Arnold coined the phrase flying saucer nearly thirty
years ago. For years, theUnited States Air Force investigated
UFO sightings. But now private groups do the investigating.
Almost all the UFO's have been identified as meteors and
weather balloons, gases like the Aurora Boreails, even the
reflection of an airplane's tail assembly. Most experts feel
they can identify every UFO...and more important...there's
no proof at all that a UFO from outer space has ever visited
the Earth.
Rebuttal: (1) Once again, it wasn't Arnold, but newsmen like
Chris Glenn who coined the term Flying Saucer. (2) During
1972, at a meeting of the Retired Officers Association in
Baltimore, Maryland, Lt. Col. Lou Corbin stated, "Although
the Air Force will deny it, they are still investigating UFO's.
This is being done through two projects-"Oid New Moon"
and "Blue Paper." Also, we have information that the
Aerospace Defense Command has stepped up UFO inter
ception pursuits. (3) It is true that a certain percentage of
UFO sightings can be explained. (4) The only experts who feel
they can identify every UFO sighting are those persons who
sit in their- ivory towers and give blanket explainations for
UFO incidents without once ever thoroughly looking at all the
evidence. (5) And as for that last point, what consitutes
"proof?"
Glenn: Okay Carol-Let's take a close look at one of the most
famous UFO sightings...
Voice: (Narratlon)-October 18th, 1973...A captain and a
crew of three aboard a Bell UH-1 H helicopter...The captain is
the commanding officer of the 316th Medical Detachment,
United States Army Reserve, based in Cleveland, Ohio. It's
just past 11 P.M.... The crew chief sights a bright red light,
due east. The light seems to travel with the helicopter when
suddenly, it grows larger: ..and comes faster...The tight and
the helicopter seem to be on a collision course. T.he captain
puts his helicopter into a dive. The red light seems to follow
the dive. The captain tells his crew, "Brace for impact!" ...But,
there's no impact. Suddenly the cockpit is illuminated, as if
the object has stopped directly over the helicopter. Then the
glowing object disappears to the west; radio contact is lost.
But when the captain checks his altimeter, he finds that his
helicopter is no longer diving; instead, it is gaining altitude.
Glenn: What did the captain and his crew see? AUFO? A ship
from outer space? Well, this sighting has been investigated
by organizations and private individuals. The captain,
himself, participated in a re-creation of the sighting. The
conclusion of one very experienced investigator: the captain
and his crew saw a fireball; a meteor, a piece of interplanetary
rock that catches fire when it passes through the Earth's
atmosphere. A meteor shower was under way at the time this
inciden1 occurred. And most of us have seen meteors; we call
them sWooting stars. Scientists have learned that it's almost
impossible to judge distance when you're in the air, so the
crew could have made an honest mistake and thought the
meteor was much closer than it was. Now, immediately after
the incident, the crew tried to radio airports in Cleveland,
Akron and Columbus, but they weren't able to make contact.
But later investigators show there was no mystery. The

helicopter, at Its low altitude, was simply too far from these
airports. The same investigator says the captain might have
thought he was diving down, but he probab1y pulled back on
the stick and raised the helicopter when he jerked back to look
at the meteor:
Martin: So it might have been a meteor, but you can't be
sure?
Glenn: Not 100 per cent sure. But remember, there was a
meteor shower in Ohio at the time. This sighting has been
investigated more than once and all the evidence says,
''Meteor.''
Rebuttal: It was at this point in the program that CBS openly
twisted facts and conveniently ignored crucial observations to
fit their purpose. Here emotional prejudice and personal bias
take their toll. For these reasons, this rebuttal will be given in
three parts.
PART 1 THE SIGHTING: What actually occurred
October 18th, 1973, Captain Lawrence J. Coyne, command
er of the 316th Medivac Unit U.S. Army Reserve, based at
Hopkins International Airport, Cleveland, Ohio, and three
reservists, all aboard a Bell U H-1 H helicopter, departed from
Columbus at 10:30 _P.M. for a return trip to Cleveland.
Captain Coyne was the pilot, Lt. Arrigo D. Jezzi was the
co-pilot. Coyne is a veteran military pilot and a very qualified
observer.
Chronology of Events:
At 11:P.M.the helicopter was flying at 2,500 feet on a
northeast course about 10 miles east of Mansfield when
the crew chief, E5 Robert J. Yanacsek, reported a red
light about 5 miles to the east. At first the crew thought
it was a radio beacon. .
Yanacsek advised, "The light is moving. It is coming
at us. It's on a collision course." ,
Coyne grabbed the controls from his co-pilot. "It
looked like a fighter plane coming straight for us,"
Coyne said. ''I took immediate evasive action. I cut the
power and dropped into a shallow dive. We dropped
through 2,000 feet, and it was heading right for us. We
braced for impact.''
Just as collison seemed certain, the object came to a
dead stop, and the crew got a real look at their
''bogey''. Coyne described the craft: ''It was un-real. It
was unlike anything produced on earth-cigar shaped
with a glowing steady red light on it's leading edge. A
hull was at the very top of it, and a green light emitted
from the rear of the craft filled our cabin with a green
glow. It was eerie."
Coyne tried radio contact with Mansfield tower.
Negative.
With the green light still illuminating the helicopter,
Coyne looked at his instruments. His altimeter was
rising. "I could hardly believe It was reading 3,500 feet,
climbing to 3,800. I made no attempt to pull up. All
controls were set for a 2D-degree dive, yet we had
climbed from 1,500 to 3,800 feet with no power In a
 matter of a couple of seconds with no G-forces or other
noticeable strains,'' Coyne said. (Such a rate of ascent
is impossible for a helicopter that takes a full minute to
climb 2,000 feet under maximum power.)
Then the crew ''felt a bounce,'' and the other craft
shot off in a northeastern direction.

PART 2 THE EXPLANATION: was It a meteor?

Despite the CBS claim that the UFO "disappears to the

west," neither Christopher Glenn nor Carol Martin were
aboard the Bell U H-1 H. The fact of the case is that the
object approached from the east, moved on a westerly course
until it was above the helicopter, then zipped off to the
northeast.
A check with Paul Oles conffrmed my suspicions: meteors
simply do not hover nor pull ninety-degree turns.! Mr. Paul
Oles )s Director of Programs with Pittsburgh's Buhl
Planetarium. As to the fact that a "meteor shower in ohio"
was underway, first of all, meteor showers are not localized
phenomena which occur only over certain towns or states, and
only on occasion. More than 100,000,000 bombard the earth
every day, and there are meteor showers of greater or lesser
intensity occurring year-round with nine showers taking
prominence.
Besides, the detailed testimony of the crew indicates that
this was anything but a meteor.

PART 3 THE INCONSISTENCES: CBS vs facts

CBS had played down the Coyne case In Its debunking

attempt in many ways. First, they ighored the color change
and detailed description given by the crew. CBS carefully
worded their report so that a meteor would be the only
obvious explanation. They claimed that the object headed
west, giving it a straignt-line trajectory typical of meteors.
They also altered the chronological sequence of events, played
up the meteor shower "in Ohio" angle, said that Coyne
probably pulled back on the stick when he jerked back to look at
the meteor. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Final note: According to an Army spokesman at the Pentagon
in Washington, "The Incident is described in our records as
the sighting of an Unidentified Flying Object."
Back to the CBS show
Glenn; ...And we'll be back in a moment with the most
amazing film of an Unidentified FlyingObject ever seen, until
it was identified.
It was at this point in the program that the Jean Oldfield
UFO O'Wiion pictures were shown to the television audience.
Glean: Well that was the best filrrr ever taken of an
Unidentified Flying Object. (Glenn then went on to report on
how that particular film was identified as the reflection of the
an airliner's tail assembly reflected on the window.)
Rebuttal; Granted, CBS, your explanation of the Oldfield film
is probably correct. But that film is certainly not ''the best

film ever taken" of a UFO. Not by a long shot.

military and civilian researchers alike; the verdict: the objects
depicted on these films are. and remain, unidentified. Among

I'm sure that no one who saw
this UFO will deny their e.yes, nor
their memory . They'll never for
get it; I know because I vias there .
I'm an executive. for an American
oil company and was in Kuwait, a
6,532 sque mile country in the
Middle East, on business.
I had driven out to one of the oil
fields- owned by my firm which is
approximately 90 miles from_ the
nation's capital, Umm Alaish. I
had made the little trip many,
many times before . This time, I
had some papers to give to the
head technician, requiring his
signature .
It was just as I was driving up to
the main building when I first saw
the strange aircraft. As I watched
it descend, several others, in
cluding some Americall employ
ees, stopped to watch the fasci
nating and awesome sight .
God, it was bigger than a
74 7- maybe twice the size -and
round It was a very bright silver
..
in clor, with a huge dome on top,
and flashing red lights .
I just stood there gawldng,my
mouth wide open, not knowing
what was happening. The strange
craft had no wings and no
visible surface controls . At least
none that I could see. Im
mediately, everybody tha at first
had gathered in bewilderment,
now started running from the
object. I ducked down behind a
. low cement wall which leads to the
base's communications system.
I don't mind admitting I was
scared . But there 's something rm
good atcontrolling my emotions,
my fears included. And that 's
what I did. I popped my head over
the wall to see what was going on.
Most of the workers were out of
sight, and all I was. able to make
out were several men in the
distance running away from the
thing which had actually touched

or should I say rotated, and as it
did so, a window came into view .
Protruding from this window was
a large tube . I figured it was some
sort of weapon (from knowledge of
the many sci-fi films I'd seen

in my time) and it was pointing .
straight at me . I crawled away_ and
ttlanaged to get myself into the
communications building .
I turned to some fellow who was
seated at a desk, his. face glued to
the company 's COIIlDlunication
board, obviously teying to cotact
someone on the radio. His eyes
looked downcast as he turned
toward me . "It's useless. There's
just no juice . Everything's simply
gone dead ."
Suddenly, a brilliant blue light
filled the entire room. It was so
bright that we all had to close our
eyes and raise our hands over our
faces.
Curiousity is my middle name, I
must say here and now. Even as a
kid, when the other fellows and I
would walk home from school and
pass a ladder, which would be
standing beside a building, they' d
scoV(l and quiver and walk around
it. I never did. I'd just walked
under it. Just to see what would
happen. Nothing ever did.
With that same curiosity, I
walked over to the door and pulled
it open. That blue light was
coming from the tube which "was
sticking out from the little window
in it's dome. That light was aimed
straight at me . There was no time
to duck. I simply spotted it too
late. I felt a strange feeling come
over me as the light hit me,
bathing me, making my whole
body feel weak, my head spinning,
arms and legs heavy, my eyes
drowsy.
The dome then started to tum . I
was able to make that out. Or,
_ rather, it opened up, as it turned,
to reveal an inner dome made of
something transparent. I couldn't
makeout what. And .then I saw
the figures. They looked human,
and at the same time they looked
alien. They just waved to me, at
least in my drowsy condition
that-s what it seemed like . And
sor in somewhat of a drunken
stupor, I waved back.
All of a sudden the place wlt.ere
I stood started to rise and make
some sort of hUmming noise, but
one I'd never heard before . It
almost sounded musical.

two occasions, Hildy's father, and
her uncle Julius, said they heard
them also.
''I was awakened in the middle
of the night-it must have been
two or three in the morning,
proclaimed Julius Hammanneyer,
a recently retired insurance sales
man who was visiting with his
family in Gienburg. ''I heard
voices-men's voices-and they
seemed to be coming from Hildy's
room."
H ammarmeyer told how he had
strained his ears at the walls,
listening. He told this reporter:
''The voices were coming from
Hildy's room - or seemed to -
and yet it was as though they were
emanating from all over the house
-from within the very walls, the
floors and ceilings themselves."
Hammarmeyer went on: ''I
walked down the corridor to where
Hildy's room was situated. I saw
my sister and brother-in-law lis
tening at the door. The voices

room. There were three distinct
voices. My sister, Gersula, said

agree on how many voices there
were, they were positive they
were all male voices, speaking in a

Brauers to Dr. Werner Haverme

The priest told the Brauers, ''If

planetary bodies, the resources
available from these would still
require a reduction of population
on the home world. Only then

then nature replaced them. An
alien planet could support as
many as fifty million people in
palatial comfort for billions of

We have no justification for our
childish belief that resources are
unlimited or that sources of energy
unknown to us exist to support
more people. To suppose that
psychic powers can make some

The real barrier to our further
advance in science is increasing
vagueness of data. This is why
technically superior aliens need
not be more than 200 years in
advance of ourselves, if that
much. That they may be billions of
years ahead of us as people is
another matter.

mature civilization would be most

beings would have all their amen
ities in the countryside . The real
pleasures of life are iii the very
web of life itseH, and never in a
city. We have not yet learned how
to transplant urban amenities into
the backwoods. We seem to prefer
automobile exhaust to clean air.
One of the major epochs in any
alien existence is precisely when
their planet reaches the stage
which earth has reached. Our
planet is absurdly overpopulated
and driven by a mad greed for
resources. It is choked by aliena
ting cities, intolerance, and hostil
ity . No superior aliens would dare
allow us anywhere near them.
How, then, are we to be reconciled
with them?
Pleasant life on a mature world
is safe only if ail other intelligent
beings are themselves mature.
Exchange between these mature
beings separated by vast distances
is possible becau of openness to
alien values . Safety is assured
only when no beings capable of
interstellar .travel are still at the
stage of being aggressive in
nature .
If the Galactic Club is a real
thing, then membership in it is
based upon three requirements .
An intelligent people must reduce
its population drastically, use its
resources wisely, and develop a
truly civilized disposition. Any
new planet (such as our earth)
which does not fulfill these re
quirements is a menace to all the
others . But if we were regarded as
a menace, it would be very likely
that we would have been destroy
ed by now.
Could it be that the superior
aliens have selfish motives? Why
else would they leave their home
planets to spend time around the
disheartening human scene in
stead of getting rid of it and going
back home? The only possible
explanation is that in a galactic
community, every civilization is
capable of contributing unique
talents which could enrich and
diversify all the other cultures .
Thus , it is to the advantage of the
superior aliens if we manage
somehow to mend our ways.
Many scientist now believe that
there must be an enormous num
ber of worlds that can support
intelligent beings. Evidence from
many sciences support this idea.
We must therefore look upon the
Galacitic community as a very real
possibility. Any objection to this
view would if the aliens wanted us
to develop to maturity, why would
they not interyene now to prevent
us from failing. There are several
valid reasons why their interfer
ence should be minimal. Alien
advice to us would not be readily
followed. Many of us would refuse
to Understand it. It would be
suspected of being a way to
fatten us for the kill . Those of us
who prefer simple lies to the
complex truth would happily listen

 May 1 2 , 1974 : Thirty-nine stu
dents in a Miami, Florida elementary
school were rehearsing a musical
play. Abruptly one of the students,
Lisa Edney, fainted. Within minutes
the entire class became ill. Time:
around ten a . m .
Immediately fire amd ambulance
services were notified and dispatched
to the school. The entire student
body-a total of 450-was evacuated
from the building. When officials
arrived, they began searching for a
suspetted gas leak, which, it was
theorized, could be traced to a
broken main. No such leak was
found.

wondered if a newly laid library
carpet might have affected the
students. It was reported that the
carpet did have an "overpowering
smell . " Unfortunately , this was but
another unfounded theory; the stu
dents had not been anywhere near
the library.

for nausia, faintness , and head
aches , and later released in good
condition. Dr. Daniel Wuensch of
the North Miami General Hospital
was the physician reported to have
treated the students. Wuensch, after
thoroughly examining the children,
reached a conclusion that was some

by carbon dioxide which "had leaked

December 30, 1973: An Associat
ed Press wire story described another
"mass illness" affecting persons at a
Gillespie, Illinois movie theater.
According to that report, 84 viewers
(again most of them teenagers and
youngsters) were overcome with the
now familiar pattern of "nausia,
headaches, and dizziness. "
Again only eight of those affected
were taken to hospitals for treat
condition . Dr. Lee Johnson, a trau-

results of medical tests. "

Richard Zarr didn't agree with Dr.
Johnson's hypothesis. however. "It
wasn't any kind of follow-the-leader
type thing , " be said. "Seven or eight
people were lying on the sidewalk in
front of the show. These people were
actually passed out. We were re
viving them with oxygen and every
thing else."
The sheriff reported that the
viewers began feeling ill during the
movie showing, and as spon as they
left the-theater for air, collapsed onto
the sidewalks.
Officials felt that a "foreign
substance" could have been injected
into the theater ventilating system.
No results on the actual findings-if
r:."-v-were made known.
April 13, 1969: Approximately 20
! enagers were affected by the same
mysterious illness during a showing
of the movie , Romeo and Juliet. The
place in question: Paradise Theater
in Faribault, Minnesota.
Kirk Dean, a 21 -year-old senior at
St. Olaf College who had been
escorting his lady friend out of tbe
building, was quoted as saying "My
girl friend was fine until she got
outside. She took a whiff offresh air
and keeled over. Most of them [the
other victims] were like that," he
said.
The affected persons were taken
by ambulance to Rice County Hospi
tal, but were "soon released after a
dose of oxygen . "
Power company officials and po
lice and firemen who e,amined the
theater afterward suspected, as
usual, a gas leak. They found none.
Whatever the cause of these
accounts of group sickness, one
thing c be safely assumed: Every
case cited above is obviously inter
related. Nearly all the victims were
young, 2 1 or younger. The same
symptoms were exhibited in every
instance- nausia,_ vomiting, head-
aches . and finally faintness. In
terestingly enough, the ill-struck
seem to have been affected worse
after leaving the respective buildings
and breathing outside air. Equally
interesting is that in two of the four
cases I mentioned, only eight of the
many victims were actually hospital
ized. This makes one wonder how
many people may hav:e been treated
in the two cases not so thoroughly
documented.
In the May, 1974 issue of Preven
tion, that magazine commented on
an attack of nausia and dizziness
experienced by British school child
ren. The children were performing in
a youth parade featuring "hundreds
of kazoo players. " Again, physicians
declared the incident as nothing
more than an attack of "juvenile
hysteria."
A David Anderson of Miller Falls,
Massachusetts, wrote to Prevention
and ct>mmented tht a few years ago,
a French scientist was working on"a
sonic weapon that could kill at
rges of five miles. " That scientist
is one professor Gavraud, according
to Lyall Wilson, in his book Super
nature.
According to Wilson, Gavraud
was experiencing attacks of nausia
whenever in his Marseilles penthouse
office. Eventually he traced the
nausia to an air conditioning unit in
another room which was causing his
entire office to vibrate at the rate of
seven cycles per second.
Gavraud began carrying out ex
periments using high frequency
sound. This led to the designing of
of all things-a six-foot police
whistle powered by compressed air.
When the whistle was "fired" for the
first time, the technician pulling the
trigger dropped dead. An autopsy
revealed his internal organs "bad
been mashed into an amorphous jelly
by the vibrations . " Fortunately, this
sort of thing is very rare.
Apparently sound isn't the only
effect which can cause nausia and
faintness . Wilson also reported in
Supernature -that during 1946, one
Grey Walter began experimenting
with light flashes of a regular nature.
A flicker of between 8 and 1 2 cycles
per second was found to cause a
seizure similar to an epileptic fit.
Walters reported that one person in
20 is affected by light flicker,
sometimes inducing less than an
epileptic seizure but stimulating a
feeling of nausia and light-head
edness instead.
That sonics or cycled light may
play a part in the reports document
ed above seems apparent. Or does it?
Why, for instce, did the phe
nomenon single out teenagers and
youngsters? Surely sound or ight
patterns wouldn't differentiate be
tween 21 -year-old Kirk Dean and his
18-year-old girl friend? Or is a few
years of physical maturity vital to an
immunity against such attacks?
Then, too, there are the reports of
people collapsing after leaving the
buildings. Why pass out then, when
removed from the course of the
irritation?
One possible explanation for all
this may be an atmospheric de
ficiency within the affected building.
Just possibly, a gas had been-in
some manner-removed from the
air. An abrupt return of the removed
element into the hum system could
have induced a kind of shock, thus
resulting in collapse. Like a peson
who has been airborn or at sea for a
length of time and needs to regain
his "land legs , " the individual
deprived of a normally present (but
not necessarily essential) element
must be reoriented to its return.
Scuba diver undergo something of
this sort while using a prepared
breathing mixture for deep diving.
On returning to the surface, they
must adjust slowly or suffer the
consequences.
The fearful thing about all this is
that if indeed some element is being
removed from the air under certain
circumstances , or if light flicker or
sonic waves are being broadcast in
whatever fashion, who or what is
creating the problem ? It's almost as
if some new technique in biological
warfare were being tested . A sound
notion is that perhaps we should find

Nikola Tesla, pioneer electronics
technician, flashed radio mes
sages from earth to outer space
two years before Guglielmo Mar
coni transmitted his feeble signals
across the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1899 Tesla constructed an
interplanetary radio transmitter
near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Power was driven through a
gigantic Tesla coil, seventy-five
feet in diameter, and flashed like
lightning from a two hundred foot
tower. A make-and-break de
vice wired into the coil permitted
the transmitting of messages in
code .
During these experiments, Tesla
began receiving codes on equip
ment at the Colorado station.
While these weird sound-symbols
were unintelligible to Tesla and
Marconi radio stations in Europe
just before the First World War,
especially during 1919-1921.
On one occasion in 1920 the
Italian inventor was vacationing in
the Mediterranean Ocean aboard
his 220- foot yacht, the Electra.
Marconi used his leisure time to
test high-powered radio equip
ment. It was on one such occasion
that he became aware of strange
coded signals.
Marconi said that the code wu
never used on earth, and that it
was transmitted over a wave
length (2 kilocycles) ten times
longer than could have lasted at
that time, broadcasted by any
terrestrial radio station. He be
lieved that the messages came
from outer space , possibly from
the planet Mars.

the period August 2 1-23, all high
powered radio transmitters in all
parts of the world shut down for
five minutes every hour. During
these periods of silence, Dr. Todd
suggested that the radio bands
should be combed for signals
coming from outer space. Radio
stations throughout the world, at
the diplomatic nudgings of the
United States Government went
along with the Todd plan.
During these five minute seg
ments, ' ' strange noises ' ' and
c lharsh dots" were received by
monitors in the United States,
Canada, England and France.
Station WOR, Newark, New
Jersey, received coded messages.
Mysterious sounds were picked
up on 10 kilocycles by a 24-tube
receivjpg set manned by Marconi
Company at Dulwich, England.
Marconi spokesmen said the
signals were not coming from any
terrestrial transmitter.
The code was received at the
Point Grey wireless station, Van
couver, British Columbia. It was
also heard by the radio operator at
the Vancouver Merchants ex
change. It was revealed that the
signals had been heard in the area
since late July, almost every day
at 6:20 and 7 : 12 a.m.
It has heeD insinuated that the
Vancouver signals were actually
the result of malfunctions of
the Point Grey equipment. C.W.
Mellish, head radio operator at
the Point Grey station, insisted
that ' 'The signal has been noticed
at the same hour practically eyery
day for over four weeks. It is
absolutely distinctive and cannot
be attributed to any known
instrument, static, or leaking
transformers in Vancouver. ' '
In addition to his broadcasting
project, Professor Todd approach
ed an inventor named Charles
Francis Jenkins . Jenkins had
developed the "Jenkins Radio
Camera, " a device that recorded
radio signals on a thirty foot strip
of paper tape.
This apparatus was tuned to 50
kilocycles. Impulses which came
in over this frequency were
printed upon the tape. When the
tape was later examined, it was
discovered to be covered with
dots. Along one edge the dots
were fairly evenly spaced but the
dots along the other edge were so
arranged as to make up crudely
pictured human faces/
Dr. Mansfield Robinson, a
psychic researcher from Royden,
England, tried to contact Mars by
radio in 1926 . He had previously
received (he claimed) telepathic
instructions in the matter from a
big-eared Martian woman named
' 'Compararu. ' ' Robinson said that
his radio picked up the letter M
and S in a special' ' Martian code. ' '
The psychic researcher again
attempted to contact Mars on
October 24, 1928. His five word
message was transmitted on 16.04
kilocycles by the powerful post
office wireless station at Rugby,
England . The British government
charged Robinson the going rate
for mundane messages . . . seven
shillings , six pence ; about $1.80 in
American money at the 1928 rate
of exchange.

UFO while in orbit was Major
Gordon Cooper who during the
Mercury flight 7, (May 15th 1963)
while passing over Australia,
sighted an unidentified flying
object (called bogeys by NASJ\)

UFO was also spotted by over 200
persons at the Muchea Tracking
Station near Perth, Australia.
Cooper said the object was of
"good size" and claimed "it was
higher than I was. It wasn't even
in the vicinity of the horizon . . . ' '

opinion , most important sightgs
were made by our Apollo astro
nauts on and around the moon.
Neil Artnstrong and Buzz Aldrin
on the very first moon landing
expedition sighted an unusual
bogey just one day out. My book
gives an actual description of their

NASA transcript of the teChnical
debriefing session during which
the astronauts tried to analyze
their encounter with this space

B R: If so many UFOs were
sighted, why weren't these heard
on the live telecasts of the trips to
the moori?
WILSON : Some were, but most
came at times when there was no
live telecast . When the astronauts
actually saw UFOs while their
activites were being carried on

through a pre-arranged code. This
is clear from the mission control
conversations of the sightings.
Dr. Farouk El Baz, now with the
Smithsonian Institute, admitted
as much in a recent interview.
Furthermore, Dr. James Harder
of the University of California,
came across these same sightings
while reviewing mission-control
conversations on tape. When
NASA officials were asked by Dr.
Harder to comment on them, they
embarrassingly adJnitted that the
astronauts did indeed sight UFOs
on the moon trips.
BR: Why did NASA try to cover
them up or keep them from the
public?
WILSON: According to Harder, a
NASA official said that it was
because of "fear of public panic" .
BR: Do you believe that UFOs
may be based inside the moon?
WILSON: Yes, definitely. Very
few people realize how many
strange moving lights have been
spotted on or around the moon,
not only in recent decades but
over the past several centuries as
well. AstronomiCal journals all
over the world are filled with
hundreds of such reports . One
rece_nt survey of astronomical
journals alone uncovered over 800
such reports. Another careful
study of these done by Patrick
Moore of the Amagh Planetarium
in Northern Ireland and Barbara
Middlehurst of the Planetary and
Lunar Laboratory, University of
Arizona, claims there are over 400
solid, unquestionable sightings of
strange lunar lights and inexplic-
. able lunar events Qf all kinds. In
fact, even our government knows
that SOJWthing strange is going
on. NASA actually commissioned
a program called Operation Moon
Blink, in which observatories
around the world began a special
search for such strange lights.
In a short time, ten such lunar
phenomena were cited.
BR: The major thrust of your book

WILSON: Simply because the
facts and the evidence indicates

by some unknown alien beings
and steered into orbit around the
earth eons ago.
BR: What evidence do they offer
to back their claim?
WILSON: First and foremost, a

Dr. Gordon McDonald did a
motion study which concluded
that the moon is hollow and Dr.
Sean Solomon's (M.I.T.) study of
the gravitional field based on data
from our Orbiter program leads to
the frightening possiblity that the
moon is hollow.
BR: Why should such a discovery
be frightening?
WILSON: Because if it is hollow
then the moon must be some kind
of spaceship that has been created
by an unknown alien intelligence.
If this is true, such a discovery
would have frightening Implica
tions for man and his world. I
might add that seismic evidence
from the moon also indicates that
the moon is hollow and, believe it
or not--has an inner shell of metal.
BR: What seismic evidence exists
that the moon is hollow?
WILSON: On our trips to the
moon we placed sensitive seism
ometers on the surface to learn as
much about the internal make-up
of our satellite as possible. Vari
ous objects, like spent third stages
of rocket boosters as well as lunar
landing modules: were crashed
into the moon. Every time w:e did
this, the moon, as NASA scien
tists put it ' 'rang like a huge
gong' ' . Or, as one NASA scientist
put it, ' 'like a huge bell' , and it
has done so time and again, for up
to four hours. Furthermore, the
vibrations traveled down to a
depth of about 22 - 25 miles and
reveals an inner layer of differ
ent composition and material
exists inside the moon. This mat
erial is definitely not rock, for, not
only did the vibrations travel great
distances around the moon but
they did gradually accelerate to a
speed of 6 miles per second. This,
I believe, is the speed of sound
through metal.
NASA scientists have made

 The legend of ancient astro
nauts has probably fascinated
man as much as any other. With
the flood of books and movies on
the subject, millions have taken
an interest in these visitors from
outer space.
The theory itself is nothing
new . . . having been around since
the days of Charles Fort . . . but it
was Erich Von Daniken ' s Chari
ots of the Gods that brought this
amazing legend to the general
public' s attention . In doing so,
Von Daniken carried a carload of
errors and misinformation . This
information was erroneous back in
the fifties when it was originally
presented ; and he didn 't do the
one thing required of any good
reporter - to get the facts !
By not checking his facts , Von
Daniken has passed on misin
formation to his millions of read
ers ; and, indirectly , presented a
theory based on many false state
ments .
To do justice to the mistakes in
The Chariots of the Gods would
take a whole book, so I will limit
myself to a few random samples
as I thumb through Von Daniken ' s
first book on the ' 'fact' ' of ancient
astronauts .
Possibly Von Daniken 's most
outstanding error in logic comes
when he talks of all those
' 'advanced' ' civilizations that have
' 'popped-up' ' from nowhere . . . as
if overnight . Of course, his argu
ment is that aliens interfered and
helped to develop the technology
of these primitive cultures. In
other . words, if a civilization was
primitive 2000 years ago and had a
somewhat advanced culture only
1500 years ago , then Von Daniken
would imply that all of a sudden
an advanced civilization popped
up from nowhere.
Has t he ever heard of social
evolution?
After 500 years , a culture is
bound to take advantage of ad
vances by pure technological evo-
lution . So that a more advanced
civilization would be expected,
and one would, indeed , be sur
prised if we did not find one. To
help you understand what I mean,
suppose that a man in the far-off
future was to dig up ruins from
our present day society and ones
from only two hundred yem-s ago.
The range of technological ad
vance would be amazing, but
could this future man say,
"Wow . . .look ! In less than two
hundred years this civilization had
suddenly advanced . . . 'popped up '
out of nowhere . It must have been
visitors from outer space . ' ' Hard
to believe? Yes , but this is what
Von Daniken is saying when he
talks about advanced civilizations
popping up out of nowhere.
Not only is his logic faulty on
civilizations popping up, but so
are his facts , which look impres
sive but do not add to the validity
of his theory. For example , Von
Daniken states that we (i.e . , the
scientific community) do not know
where the ancient culture of
.Sumeria came from . He maintains
that it came from the aliens
because it was so advanced over .
the Semite barbarians. But we do
know the origin of the Sumerians
and it is well documented by a
series of cultures , which evolved
between 9000 and 3000 B .C . Yet,
Von Daniken claims it materi
alized out of nowhre.
In the Chariots of the Gods, Von
Daniken lists a group of amazing
archeological objects that he be
lieves can only have been created
by a more advanced civilization
than was present at that time in
man ' s cultural evolution . A few
are listed below:
In Helwan there was found an
ancient piece of cloth . . . with a
fine fabric that only a special
factory in modem day time could
have produced. Or so Von Dani
ken leads us to believe . What he
overlooked was the simple fact
that the Anatolians were good
weavers 2000 years before the
date of this ' ' amazing' ' piece of
cloth . . . and in 2000 years, no
doubt, they would have developed
the craft , one of the oldest, to a
fine art.
Cut crystal lenses were found
amon the ruins of ancient sites.
So firie , that today we produce
such lenses from an electro
chemical process using cesium
oxide . This doesn't mean that our
forefathers used the same meth
od ; and, by the way, electrochem
ical processes occur quite readily
in nature . By experimenting, a
bright individual could have dis
covered how to use these natural
occurring processes to his advan
tage . No alien interference need
be implied.
The Baghdad Museum has a
clay container on display . Next to
it lays two metal rods. Von
Daniken says that this is an
ancient dry cell battery . . .if one
adds acid (an electrolyte) . Just
because a battery can be created
by adding an electrolyte doesn't
mean that the ancients did this ;
and it, the container, could have
been for an entirely different
purpose.
Von Daniken has the habit of
calling any ancient drawing (e.g.
cave paintings) with a man in
costume as being the primitive ' s
interpretation of their gods . . . the
ancient astronauts. His argument
becomes stronger if the person in
the drawing is wearing some type
of headgear, especially with ob
jects projecting from it. Of
course , to Von Daniken, the
headgear is a helmet and those
projecting objects could only be
antennae . Hasn't he ever heard of
war and hunting costumes worn
by primitive tribes? Costumes
that consist of hoods with horns?
Horns or antennae, which are
they?
The Bible is a major source of
UFO sightings . . . as recorded in
UFOs in the Bible by Morris K.

ken. I am not going to argue with
Von Daniken on this subject ,
because the Bible is a matter of
interpretation as it is. But I would
like to object to one of his major
theories . . . that he formulates from
the Biblical reference in Genesis
.6 : 4 . . . "when the sons of God came
in unto the daughters of men , and
they bore children . ' '
Von Daniken believes that the
' ' sons of God' ' were the alien
astronauts that came to our planet
and mated with sub-human primi
tives . . . thus creating the superior
human that we have today . . . . a
hybrid of man and space being.
This is hard to accept, from a pure
biological standpoint. Given that
the aliens exist, that they are
humanoid , that they visited an
cient Earth . . . I find it difficult, as a
zoologist, to believe that their
genetic make-up would be com
patible with ours . . . though it
might be quite similar. I might
accept that genetic engineering
took place . . . but Von Daniken does
not mention this. Why? Not
sensational enough?
Von Daniken says that the
a
wicke cities of Sodom and.. Go
morrah were destroyed by a
nuclear blast. He asks , ' 'What
else could have caused such an
explosion?" He may have arrived
at a different answer if he had
studied a few facts dealing with
the location of the two cities . They

sat, probably, over a large amount
of subterranean oil , and were
situated on the Great Rift (the
biggest earthquake fault in the
world) . Conclusion . . . a giant oil
explosion created by an earth
quake. As a side point, many
earthquakes spit up many mine
rals . . . including salt!
The Island of Elephantine was
named, according to Von Dani
ken , after the fact that the island
looks like an elephant . . . which it
does. But how did the native know
this? There is no hill to view the
island 's shape . This is inter
esting . . . if it was true . Actually,
the origin of the island' s name
comes from the Greek word for
' ' ivory ' ' ( from the Egyptian
"yeb " ) . . . which has nothing to do
with the shape of the island. Good
try, Erich.
On Easter Island we find hup
dreds of stone heads looking out
over the waters . . . as if waiting.
Waiting for the gods? Anyhow,
Von Daniken' s lack of research
really shows up here. He states
that these 25 to 30 ton statues
were made from steel-hard vol
canic rock and erected by some- .
one other than the island' s 2000
population . After all, he says,
they had no wood to make rollers
or tools to cut this steel-hard rock.
Other than the fact that the rocks
are quite soft, he overlooked a way
to find out how the native 5000
(not 2000) constructed these sta
tues . . . just ask them . This is
exactly what Thor Heyerdahl
did . . . he asked them. A group of
twelve men erected a fallen head
in just eighteen days . . . using only
ropes, stones and poles. No wood
rollers were needed . . . nor any
gods .
At times Von Daniken seemed
to mix legends . . . to fit his ideas?
For example, he records in Chari
ots of the Gods, ' 'Among May
ans . . . the god Kukulkan presum
ably corresponds to the figure of
(their) later god Quetzalcoatl. ' '
But what he failed to realize was
that not only was Quetzalcoatl not
a Mayan god, but that he pre
dated (not post-dated, as Erich
says) the Mayan god Kukulkan as
a Toltec god.
As for those marks on the plains
of Nazca ( and elsewhere ) , Von
Daniken wants us to believe that
they are landing strips and mark
ers to help the alien crafts. First,
he tells us that these beings can
cross vast expansions of space,
but then tells us they need the
help of a landing strip . . . like
modern planes. Von Daniken
gives and then takes away.
Probably the most interesting of
all, in relation to this ancient
astronaut theory, is the pyramids .
Those wonderful feats of ancient
engineering that, according to
Von Daniken, could only have
been created by superior beings.
Why does he believe this? A few
of his reasons follow :
Von Daniken states that it
would take 10,000 men 664 years
to transport the 2, 600, 000 blocks
 (each, he says, averages 12 tons)
to build the 490 foot (actually
481 . 4 feet ) Pyramid of Cheops. He
says that they couldn't feed that
many men. There were no ropes,
no wood rollers or instruments to
carve and transport the huge
stones and fit them together
within a thousandth of an inch.
This might be true if the facts
were. What he forgot to do was to
look at the hieroglyphics (picture
writing ) on the walls and tombs...
for he would find his answers. For
they record how the pyramids
were built.
First, a few of Von Daniken's
facts were wrong. The average
weight of the 2 , 300,000 stones
(not 2 ,600,000 . . . but what's
300,000 stones here or there? ) is
2 2 tons, not 12 tons. These facts
alone would reduce his estimated
time of completion from 664 years
to about 525 years...that is, if we

S A N D E R S O N : Well, yes, I'm this funny phraseology in the way of

omer and he wrote it up in his book .

sent to the office of Naval Research.
They were so fascinated that they
sent it to a place in Texas and had it
all re-done and then they called
Jessup in and said , 'Where did you
get this story?' and he said, 'I don't
kno' and they said , 'Look here, the
peole who annotated the copy of
your book are probably gypsies.
Have you ever seen anything with
minute , that sounds just like some
letters that I've received from a crazy
fellow. I've put them in the crackpot
file because I thought they were so
crazy. ' So, he went home and found
the letters and they were from this
fellow, Carl Allen whom I k.tiow
personally for many years. He half
did it as a joke. It was half a joke and
he admits now he should never have
done it because even people like the
Office of Naval Research took it
seriously. Well , that started it all!
Then all the screwballs , crackpots,
kooks, pseudo-scientists, saucerians,
and UFOlogists all got on to it . I
suppose, there must be a dozen
books published on this subject. The
.whole of it was a leg-pull on the part
of Carl Allen except for the fact that
he was in the naval service, and that
they were carrying on some exper-
iments. Now this business about
being founded on Einstein's unified
field thoory. Well , naturally, every
thing is! The moment you get into
photoelectrics, photonics , anything.
After all , the only thing that Einstein
didn't actually do was to prove that
gravity had a way of motion and he
thought that if that got itself proved
. (and I believe that we are just in the
process of doing it now) then you
could probably unify gravities (gravF
ty . . . being a way of motion) with
electro- magnetics which , of course,
is linked on the other hand to
ordinary material physics, or me
chanics as we call it. That's what is
called 'the unified theory.' But ,
anything you did of such a nature
would have to be founded on
Einstein's principles of relativity -
the bending of light, for instance. "
B O N D : ''What about all the
strange disappearances, such as the
six partrol bombers leaving Florida?
SANDERSON: "Well, that's all
that business about the Bermuda
Triangle. It's not a triangle and
Bermuda's not in it. It turns out to
be one of ten , maybe twelve . . . (as
of an article published in The
Scientific American, we did the
preliminary work and found that
there wasn't just one of these). They
aren't triangles. They're lozenge
shaped things. They're all over
water. There was another one known
to the Air Force for a long time,
south of Japan . The funny effects in
these places come and go. Then we
did some work - a whole bunch of
geologists, geo-physicists, ocean
ographers - and we found that
there were about ten of these things
concentrated where there are whirl
pools or sort of whirligigs , not
whirlpools. The moment I say whirl-
"'pool everyone's going to think of a
maelstrom or The Sargasso Sea. But,
if you look at a map of the surface
currents of the oceans, you'll see that
there are these ten places where cold
water comes jetting from the polar
regions into the hot regions and
starts turning round and round a lot
of hot water. Now, when you get a
temperature difference between the
outside of a whirligig and a thing
going around on the inside, some
very curious things happen, which
you'd never expect! It concentrates
into the center and this is really the
explanation of hurricanes, too, and
how they get going. How they seem
to gather energy rathe than dissi
pate it! Now, funny things do happen
from time to time. But , like hum
canes, they only occur sometimes.
They whirl and they finally die. But ,
in some of these ten areas , every now
and then, they develop very curious
features - something goes wrong with
electro-magnetics, for instance,
compasses don't work ; there's a
complete radio blackout; something
definitely goes wrong with time
(particularly in the one south of
Japan) and I have, here, all the
documentation from both commer
cial and military flyers. There are
planes that have arrived before they
have left and there are those that
have taken six hours longer to get
somewhere. The only way that could
be possible was (they were in touch
with the ground all the while, mind
you) that they would have to be
running into a wind of over 250 miles
an hour, 250 knots at about 1.000 ft.
And, there is no such wind. If there
had been, it would have blown
Kwajaleen and Okinawa into the
sea! All right now, these areas do
have these curious anamolies. What
happens when these natural physical
forces are sort of tampered with due
to the whirling motion? There's a
whole science of whirligigs etc. We
don't know , but it would seem that
things here drop out of our universe -
our spaceptime continuum - and it
seems to be around these areas that
things drop in. I'm back, always
back, to what I was saying in the very
beginning of our talk, you know.
That it's not a question of coming
from somewhere else or going some
where else. lfs a question of going
out of here and into here, right out of
our space-time oontinuum! "
BOND: "But , what about the dis
appearance with no trace whatso
ever? There's no flotsam or jetsam
left behind. And, wltat about the
crews of ships disappearing and the
ship is still intact."
SANDERSON : "Ah , wait a min
ute, .now youre coming to another
very interesting thing. Of course you
wouldnt find any flotsam or jetsam
if they drop out. They go right out of
our universe so you wouldn't fmd
anything. Let's talk about a boat
There's a boat going through one of
these anomalous areas when things
begin to go wrong physically. And we
think just because it vanished that
everything on it will vanish. But it
seems to be much more selective
than that, especially if there is
intelligen behind what is plucked
out.
BOND: "How so?"
SANDERSON: - "Because some
times everything alive on board is
gone! Other times the human beings
are gone, but the canaries and the
dogs and pets are left. So, this is . . .
BOND: "Are you saying this is
oontrolled by intelligence?''
SANDERSON: "Yes, intelligence
in another space-time continuum!
Some of these things are controlled.
I've been into this for Good Lord,
thirty years now, and I cannot see
anything of a purely, or what we
would call a 'physical' nature, such
as you teach in physics and chemistry
in school and our straight-forward
materialistic science, which could
possibly explairt selective snatches
such as that. Some of the cases really
are most pecu)iar of where, as I say,
the canaries, a parrot. a cat and a
oouple of dogs are left and every hu
man being has gone off quite large
modem "shi.Ps The ships still intact!
Other times the whole dang shoot
ing-match disappears. Looks to me
as if there is intelligence behind it .
Somebody's collecting seamen
or . . . And, other times the pets go,
and the people are left. If you go to
the New York Bureau of Missing
Persons, they say supposing 100,000
persons at an average disappear a
year and they get back about 70,000
but there are still bout . . . 1 2 ,000
which cannot be accounted for at all.
You know, husbands taking powders
and people oommitting suicide, you
know, all that sort of thing. Police
have an incredible record for getting
them and yet there is this tremen
dous mass which are not accounted
for (and a lot of them disappear in
the presence of other people) This
is what is so very odd, the ones that
they don't see! You see , if a hus
band decides suddenly: "I'm going
to Nevada, take a powder, change
my ruune, grow a beard". . . that's
one thing. You don't see that per
son go, really. Whereas its the one
who. 8ays: 'Til be back in one sec
ond" ...and vanishes. Now, those are
the ones that they never fmd."
BOND: "Maybe they're the chosen
few?n
SANDERSON: "But how the heck
do you know who I am, for instance,
and how do I know who you are? I
mean , you may be from someplace
else. You may not know it, but you
might still be from someplace else.

ZETA RETICULI
CONNECTION
The publication in the December
1974, issue of Astronomy maga
zine of an article by Terence
Dickinson called ' 'The Zeta
Reticuli Incident, ' ' has caused
reverberations in the scientific
community which are still being
felt to this day.
The provocative article concerns
a possible visit to earth 15 years
ago by extraterrestrials from a
binary star system known as Zeta 1
and Zeta 2 Reticuli. This faint pair
of stars, some 37 light years (220
trillion miles) distant from our
own solar system, could quite
possibly be the home base , accord
ing to the article, of the intelligent
beings who allegedly landed in
New flampshire and abducted
Betty and Barney Hill in the late
summer of 1961 .
The case of Betty and Barney
Hill has been widely circulated in
the press and other media. The
couple claims to have been taken
aboard an alien spacecraft and
being subjected to physical ex-

wninations by four-foot-tall hu
manoids. They were told upon
their release that they would not
remember anything that had
transpired during their abduction.
Their memories of the incident,
whic;h took place over a period of
two hours, were only brought to
light under subsequent hypnosis
and psychiatric sessions. While
under hypnosis, Betty Hill drew a
star map, which she claims to have
seen on a wall panel within the
spacecraft. She says that the
spacecraft commander pointed to
two stars on the map and somehow
gave her the impression that this
was the stellar system from which
the aliens had come from.
In 1968, Ohio researcher and
astronomer Marjorie Fish became
intrigued by the Hill map. In the
following year, 1969 , an astro
nomical reference book called the
Gliese Catalog of Nearby Stars
was published ; it listed all the
known stars within a radius of
55-light-years of our solar system ,

their distances, luminosities, and
perhaps most importantly, their
spectral types. Using the Gliese
Catalog, with other soutces of
data, Ms. Fish painstakingly con
structed three-dimensional mo
dels of our immediate stellar
neighborhood. She employed
beads of various color to represent
the different spectral classifica
tions of the stars. In this manner,
she could immediately determine
the locations of those stars most
like our sun and hence the ones
most likely to harbor life-bearing
planets .
The lines on Betty Hill ' s map

were purportedly described to her
by the aliens as being trade or
expeditionary routes -the aliens
would, of course, want to visit
only those stars or star systems
capable of sustaining life ; there
fore , they would presumably map
out a route consisting only of solar
or near-solar type stars close
enough to our sun in terms of
temperature , luminosity, chemi-

Composing himself, the doctor
asked the stranger to step into his
examining room. He asked the
man if anything was bothering
him. " No, " replied the man , " all
I want is for you to examine me. ' '
The doctor then proceeded to
examine the man .
What the doctor discovered was
something that no mortal on this
planet would believe. The man ,
about five feet tall, was bald and
completely devoid of hair except
for some strands on his head . His
skin was as white, or whiter, than
that of an albino- and , like
Elizabeth Taylbr, his eyes were a
deep violet. The doctor noted that
the strange man did not have hair
follicles either.
After examining the man Dr.
Diaz asked ' ' Who are you? ' ' The
man replied, ' ' I wanted you to
examine me so that you would
have no doubt that what I am
about to tell you is the truth . I am
from another sun system and I
have a message for earth people . ' '
Dr . Diaz felt faint as he slumped
into his chair. He was shocked but
his mind ws racing with the
implicatons of this encounter.
' ' I find it difficult to believe but
after examining you . . . well , I
never believed in UFOs and all
that but I guess I was wrong. ' '

What' s it like to see a UFO up
close? Would you run away?
Would you be willing to tell
anyone of your experience? Most
of us go about our daily business
without giving it any thought -not
until they read about such UFO
encounters as occurred to Warren
Martin and four of his friends.
Martin had no interest in UFOs ,
nor did he ever expect to see one.
Martin and his friends were
driving through the suburbs of
Canton, Massachusetts , when it
all started.
It was raining for the past few
hours , and somehow the rear tires
of their car had gotten stuck in the
mud only a few feet away from the
railroad traks which passed
through this area. Warren and his
friends worked hard to release the
tires from the mud for fear that a
passing train would demolish the
c. They complained loudly as
they worked to free the car from
the situation it was in.

It was about .9 pm on this cold
and wet night, when a sound from
above caught their attention . " I
thought it was a plane at first , "
said Martin . ' 'Then I noticed that
the colors of the lights were wrong
because I know that an airplane
couldn 't stand up to the -way the

on the wings would probably have
snapped them off. ' '
One of the men who would not
give- his name for fear of being
ridiculed remarked: Wow! we're
seeing flying saucers . ' ' Martin
further stated ; "We were really
kind of paranoid about it . ' ' Martin
who is 20-years-of-age said that
the group was amazed as well as
frightened as the UFO swooped to
within two or three hundred yards
from where their car was stuck .

shouted : "Tum it off, tum off

er was bad, so they decided to just
sit in the car and watch this
strange object in the night sky.
' 'We watched for aboui . ten
minutes, and then it suddenly was
gone. As . soon as it was gone, we
heard a train approachiDg, and
lucky for us it was on the $e00nd
set of traCks; otherwise the car
would have been struck. But as
the train passed and sped away. in
the diStance, we l90ked up and saw
that the UFO was back again! ' '

minutes before it left in a burst of

see what they want you to see and

certainly won't see something that
you couldn't imagine and they
wouldn't show you anything that

will only show you what they want to

after all , they could create a space
animal just as much as they could a

SANDERSON: "NO, NO, that would
be within OUR universe. They come
from Ultra - from another universe.
But, we MAY have space animals.
We've lots of jelly running around
living on space energy. I have always
thought that's possible. That's an
other probability. But you s=an't say
(to talk about U FO's) as if they were
flower pots, or houses. It's not so.
Look at the nmber of different
things there are in the North Atlantic
Ocean , for instance. believe there
are 140,000 species of foreign mini
flora alone and 48,000 species of
fish, and God knows you can go on

BOND: "What about this theory of
a hole in the earth? You know-where

SANDERSON: ''The Hollow
Earth! " Personally, I really do think
that's. a lot of rubbish. We do know
too much about our little planet,
now , to believe that there is a hole
somewhere. Admiral Byrd would
never have got out if there was. He's
supposed to have gone down , or
some rubbish . "
BOND: "But , aren't there holes
that penetrate the Van Allen Belt
themselves from the poles them
selves, the South Pole and North
Pole?"
SANDERSON: "Oh yes, through
our atmosphere that's supposed to
be true , but not through .solids , or
through water or jce. That's pure
mechanics. I mean , if you have a
hole . . . As a matter of fact there's
one very interesting thing about this
report which started all this stuff
about the hole in the earth . It was
made by Admiral Byrd, and it was a
matter of pure semantics . What he
stated in his report was that when he
was flying over the Antarctic boih
times he said, "we've flown beyond
the pole. " . . . not over the pole. But,
he said "beyond" the pole. It was
simply his way of saying that we
came from one side . . .you see when
we get to the poles there is no
geography because it all comes to a
point. So, supposing he came from
the North America side and went to
the Atlantic side , you and I would
much more likely say we flew 'over'
the pole, but in his dispatches he
said, "I flew beyond the pole. " And
then they reported they began to see
vegetation and so on . Well, of course
they would because they were in
Siberia! People turned that around
and said that they'd flown off the
earth and hit a sort of reverse earth
somewhere else . "
BOND: "What about Atlantis re
appearing? "
SANDERSON: "Now, Atlantis.
There never was such a thing. There
probably were a great number of
large islands in the Central Atlantic
which were above the surface at the
middle late Pleistocene period. That's
just before our modern period. More
especially, as the sea levels were
certainly different and the con
tinental levels were up and down.
That there was a great continent out
there which had cities on it and
civilization started on it and all that,
I see no evidence of that, whatsoever.
But, that there were large islands
which were inhabited by peoples of a
pretty advanced state of cultur (in
some volumes too, about the Stone
Age, the late Paleolithic Age) the
people who did that beautiful art in
Spain, they probably did come out of
the sea in the West from these
islands which sank . The actual story
of Atlantis, itself, is pretty well
proved now that it was that volcanic
island in the Aegean which was the
sort of mode picture before it blew
up and caused the end of the Minoan
civilization in Crete. That's all now
pretty well established by dating the

where the civilization was and it got
transferred in the old Greek stories

radioman reported that he was

the southeastern United States

this story a hoax since the

Their address is unknown to me
but, their testimony appeared in

thank-you note. A few who did
take the trouble to read it and
respond to its contents varied in
their reaction.
One leading lunar expert, for
instance , who long before the
Apollo expeditions held that our
moon was a stranger to our solar
system and who after examining
the Apollo . evidence claimed that
our moon was definitely Ioder
than the earth and therefore had
to come from somewhere else
misunderstood the entire thrust of
my book. He wrote to me : 4 'I have
not read your entire book. I
started with c)lapter 4 (the first
few chapters dealt with UFOs
seen on and around the moon
especially by our astronauts ) and
read through to the suggestion
that the moon was made by
human efforts. This, of course,
cannot possibly be true. Man has
a great deal of capacity for doing
things , but making a moon is
beyond his capacity. It just cannot
be a correct explanation. I agree
that there are many puzzling
things about the moon, and I think
no suggestion in regard to the
origin of the moon is satisfactory.
But this explanation is not satis
factory either. ' '
Of course, the artificial moon
theory holds not that the moon
was made by human effort but
some alien intelligence.

responses to this fantastic theory?

Could the tube have been a
radio sonde , or probe , from an
extraterrestrial spaceship? If so,
the instrument must have occu
pied a place in the electromagnet
ic spectrum slightly higher than
what is generally regarded as
visible light. Swifte and his wife
could see higher into the ultra-vio
let than could their relatives .
A similar, though by no means
identical observation was reported
by the Baron de Guldenstubbe in
Robert Dale Owen 's ragbag col
lection of ghost stories , Footfalls
on the Boundary of another world,
published in New York in 1860.
The Baron 's adventure took short
ly after midnight on March 16,
1854 . Born in Latvia, he was then
living at 23 Rue Street, Lazare ,
Paris .
Guldenstubbe returned home
from a party, lit a candle , and
selected a book to read. While
paging through the volume he
picked out, the Baron experienced
eight or ten body-jarring ' ' electri
cal shocks ' ' in rapid succession.
A few minutes later, he saw a
luminous, dimly-glowing cylinder
of grey vapor forming in a corner
of the room. The column , over ten
feet high, reached from the floor
almost to the ceiling. The color of
the glowing tower changed from
grey to blue. As the color altered ,
the column started to glow more
brightly.
The figure of a man began
forming within the shining cylind
er. This form solidified eufficient
ly that the Baron could make out
the body of a white-haired , elderly
man. fhe blue-eyed old man was
clean-shaven except for a few
thin , white whiskers.
Guldenstubbe watched his visit
or float away from the tube of light
and hover in the center of the
chamber. The elderly man event-

and faded away . The tube 's
brightness grew so intense that
Guldenstubbe extinguished his
candle - and was able to read
several sentences from his book.
Robert Dale Owen believed that
the Baron had witnessed the
return of a departed human spirit,
or a ghost, in the traditional sense
of that word.
I wonder if the Baron could not
have witnessed some type of
scientific experiment. The episode
as recorded by Owewn is quite
similar to the fictional ' 'beaming
down" procedure used on the
television program , Star Trek.
Could it have actually been an
electronic teleportation from an
extraterrestrial spaceship?
On July 5, 1852 , less than two
years before Gulaenstubbe's ex
perience , a Paris tailor's shop had
been "buzzed" by a mysterious
globe of light . The tailor' s name
does not seem to have been
recorded, but nis shop was on the
Rue Saint James, near the Val de
Grace .
The fireball entered a window
and brushed across the floor
towards the tailor. When the
flaming sphere reached the terri
fied shopkeeper, it climbed up the
man ' s body to the level of his face.
The fireball seemed to be study
ing the tailor.
The thing then entered the shop
hearth and roared up the chim
ney - burning through a pile of
logs on its way up . Once it was
above the roof, the sphere bst
apart with a tremendous explosion
that destroyed the chimney._
On May 23, 1955, a weird,
glowing fog was observed by
Rollie B. Mohrfahl of Jamesville ,
Wisconsin. Mohrfahl awoke at
about two a.m. on the morning of
the 23rd to find everything in his
bedroom ' 'bathed in a white
light. ' ' This illumination was so
bright that Mohrfahl--like Guld
enstubbe before him--found he
could read by it. He looked out the
window and saw a glowing,
shining, "living fog, " white as
cotten , but light as the glow from

blanket and everything could be

Mohrfahl -had to flick on his
radio for a time-check to convince
himself that it really was night out

What real connection do the
