Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: 01.09.17 Time: 45 min Year: Pre-primary

Learning Area: Mathematics Topic: 2D Shapes

Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)

ACMMG009 Sort, describe and name familiar two-dimensional shapes and three dimensional objects in
the environment

Students prior knowledge and experience:

(Outline what the students already know about this topic)
Students have been working on 2D shapes for the past week. They have been doing activities every day on shapes
via mat time and small group activities, and are coming to the end of their 2D shape lessons. Students have not
yet started learning about 3D shapes as yet.

Learning purpose: (May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content description here)
Sorting and describing squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, spheres and cubes.

Learning objectives: Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson, students will be able to: (Explain how you will know that lesson objective have
(What will students know and be able to do at the been achieved / monitor student learning)
completion of the lesson specific, concise and
attainable objectives) Class discussion
Count how many corners their 2D shapes have Success of activity
Will be able to fluently identify what a triangle,
circle, rectangle, square is.
Be able to create these 2D shapes in physical
form
Will link that 2D shapes take form in different
items.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment will be required)

Youtube video The Shapes Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfRuLS-Vnjs

Class list Yellow group
Everyday items- Triangle:Dorito chip; Rectangle: Pencil case; Square: plate; circle: CD
Pavement chalk
Ipad for photos
Photos of kids making shapes while lying on the floor
Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource adjustments)

Two students nearly permanently away Sanchez and Finlay.

Will have members of other groups join if short.

Timing: Learning Experiences:

1. Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)

Start lesson on the mat

Play youtube video The shape song
Will say to the children so as you can see shapes are found everywhere in many ways and
items.
Can anyone tell me the shape of any other everyday items
Mrs P has found some of her own everyday items
Show the dorito, plate, pencil case and cd
Show photos of kids making shapes
And say now we are going to make shapes out of ourselves too!
Explain one group will go outside at a time and I will draw around their shapes so they can
see

2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the students achieve the
learning objectives? What tasks and activities will the students be involved in to help
achieve the learning objectives?)

I will join them outside and ask them to make a triangle, square, circle , rectangle by lying
on the floor
I will then draw chalk around their shape
The group will then stand up and tell me how many corners each shape contains
3. Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
objectives?)

Knowing learning objectives have been reached by:

Count how many corners their 2D shapes have = will be assessed by answering my question
before they go inside and start next acitivity
Will be able to fluently identify what a triangle, circle, rectangle, square is.= will be assessed
by answering my question before they go inside and start next activity
Be able to create these 2D shapes in physical form = by creating them whilst I observe.
Will link that 2D shapes take form in different items. = class discussion

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

Successes: Engagement and enjoyment, the students clearly enjoyed the choice of you-tube video and the
everyday examples, lots of answers and smiling faces. All participated happily with floor activity, they seemed to
like the physicality of it and the team work.
Unplanned teachable moment was a success also, handled the question well and turned it into a subtraction
lesson.

Improvements: I first didnt say the correct amount of students in class for the teachable moment exercise, I
would be sure of the finer details like the number of children actually present.
