TheSoundmancanrevealenemieswheretheywerepreviouslyunseen,andcanshowshipsonthe
mapasifyouhadavisualcontactwiththem.TheSoundmanalsohasthepassiveabilitiestogive
yourhydrophonesalongerrangeanddetectionspeedalongwithareductionofdarknesspenalty
whenscanningforshipswhilesurfacedatnight.
TheWatchOfficercanbefoundintheForeQuarterswhilesubmergedandontheconningtower
whilesurfaced.TheWatchOfficercanbeaskedtomanthedeckorflakguns.
CommandRoom/ConningTower
Thispartofthesubmarinehasthreelevelsthetopoftheconningtowerwhichisoutsideand
containstheUZO(functionallyaperiscope),theattackperiscopewhichisinthesecondlevelofthe
conningtower,andtheobservationperiscopewhichisinthecommandroom.Notethatthe
observationperiscopeismorevisibletoothershipsthantheattackperiscope.
TheconningtowerhastheExecutiveOfficerErichvonDobenecker,theNavigatorEmilDbler,the
ChiefengineerJosefErdmann,andontoptheWatchOfficerDieterEpp.
TheExecutiveOfficer(XO)hastheactiveabilitiestocallbattlestations,andrigtheboatforsilent
running.
TheNavigatorhasthepassiveabilitiestoincreasetheoperatingdepthofthesubmarine,make

morale,andRipostewhichspeedsuptorpedoreloadtimes.
TheCookhasthepassiveabilitytoincreasethemaximummoralevalueandtheactiveabilitytocook
aspecialmealincreasingmorale.
DieselEngines
ThedieselenginecompartmentcontainsWilliPelztheDieselEngineOfficer.TheDieselEngine
Officerhasthepassiveabilitiestomaketheboatchargethebatteriesfaster,runquieter/faster.The
DieselEngineOfficercantemporarilyoverchargethedieselenginesorelectricmotorsmakingthe
boatmovefaster.
ElectricMotors/SternTorpedoRoom
ThegunnerMaxBauercanbefoundhere,andhasthepassiveabilitiestoincreaserange,and
accuracyalongwiththeabilitytodecreaseweaponloadingtimes.

Justbecauseyoucanseetheenemy,doesnotmeanthattheycanseeyou.Uboatsare
smallerandlowerprofile.Thismakesyouhardertospotandhardertohit.
Thesonarthermallayerisatadepthof40meters.Onceyoudivedeeperthanthis,destroyers
andotherpursuingcraftwillnotseeasonarreflectionfromyoursubmarine.Becareful,theycan
stillhearyou.
STRATEGY:
MerchantAttackWithAutomaticTorpedoSolution
Whenyoucomeacrossasingleunescortedmerchantvessel,youshouldalwaysattackit.Usethe
markingtooltomarkthemerchant'spositionsastimegoeson.Onceyouhavetwomarksyoucan
drawalinethatrepresentsthemerchant'scourse.Thebestplacetoattackfromisaperpendicular
angletothemerchantwithabout1kilometerofrange.Youmayhavetooutrunthemerchantbefore
settingyourangleup.Note:thevisualrangecircledoesnotmeanyouwillbespottedimmedietly
aponentrytotheperimeterofthecircle,howevertheclosertotheshipyouare,themorelikelyyou
aretobespotted.Ifyouarespottedbyanyship,thatshipwillbegintozigzagorvaryitsspeedto
makeatorpedosolutionhardtoget.

Onceyouareinapositiontobeginyourattack(perpendicular,rightoutsidethevisualrangecircle)
youshoulddivetoperiscopedepthandsetcoursesoyouwillbeinrangewhenthemerchantgoes
by.
Gotoaperiscope(ortheUZOifyouaresurfacedforsomereason),andselectyourtarget.TheTAI
willdisplayalinecomingfromyoursubmarinewithnumbers13andasimilarlinecomingfromthe
merchantvessel.Yourgoalistoallignanytwoofthenumberssotheyareinthesamespot(3ontop
of3,2ontopof2...)etc.Ifyouareliningupthe3s,andtheyareatdifferentdistances,thenaimin
frontorbehindthemerchant's3(ifyour3isfurtheraway,aiminfront).Luckilyifyouareinclose
range,thisdoesn'tneedtobedonewithsurgicalprecision.Note:InWW2UboatCaptains/XOsoften
aimedslightlyforwardfromcenterontheenemymerchantbecausethemerchantcouldaccelerateif
theysawthetorpedo'sbubbletrail.

Waitforthemtoimpactiftheymissthenyoushouldeitherletthemerchantgo,orifpossibleallign
yourselfforanotherattackrun.Oncetwotorpedoes(ormoredependingonthesizeoftheenemy
ship)haveimpacted,surfaceandmanthedeckgunbypressingF5.Note:youareabletoopenthe
conningtowertophatchatadepthof6.5meters.
Atthispointgototheconningtowerandscrollforwardwithyourmousewheeltoselectthe
binocularsandpressthespacebar.Keepaneyeontheenemyship,asyourgunnerswillkeepon
attackingitevenafteritbeginstosink.Oncethedeckgunhasfinishedoffthemerchant,adjust
courseandleavequicklyoftenadestroyerwillcometohuntyoudown.Note:Thetopbar
representsthemerchant'sstructuralintergrityandthebottombarrepresentsthemerchant's
bouyancy.
Torpedoes:
Differenttorpedoesaregoodfordifferentuses.TheTII(G7e)torpedoiselectricpowered,anddoes
notleaveatrailofbubbles.Thismakesithardforenemiestoseeandavoidthetorpedo(destroyers

warshipsandagoodstrategywouldbetousetheminthesterntorpedotube.TheTIIelectric
torpedohistoricallyhadproblemswithdepthkeepinganddetonation,sobecarefulwhenusingiton
highrealism.
TheTIItravelsat28knots,andhasarangeof3km.TheTI(G7a)torpedoissteampowered.The
TIhasalongerrangeandmultiplespeed/rangesettings5kilometersat44knots,7.5kilometersat
40knots,12.5kilometersat30knots.
Torpedoesshouldimpactenemyshipsasclosetoaperpendicularangleaspossibletoavoid
bouncingoffthehullwithoutdetonation.Ifashipischasingyou,setthetorpedodepthtoaleveljust
underitskeelandusethemagnetictrigger.
Torpedoesaremosteffectivewithin2kilometers,andtheidealrangeis1kilometer+/400meters.
Becarefulasshipscanspotyourperiscopethisisespeciallyimportantwhendealingwith
destroyers.

TheHEroundisgoodforhittinganenemyshipatlongrangeanddoingdamagetothestructureson

relativetoyourboat,withbearing0beingyourbow,and180beingyourstern.Thispartispretty
simple,justpointatthecenterofthetargetshipandrecordthatnumber.
Step3:Range
Click"range"andaimyourperiscopeatthewaterlineofthetargetship.Click"usethestadimeter"
andaimtheperiscopeatthehighestpointonthetargetshipthisincludeseverythingontheship,
soifaflagpoleisthehighestthingontheship,aimatthetopoftheflagpole.Whenyouhaveit,left
clicktogeneratearangeestimation.
Keepinmindyoucanalsomakerangeestimationsifyoudon'thavethetimeforthis.AtypeVIIU

Angleonbowiswhereyourboatiswithrespecttothetargetship.Thediagramshowsagenericship
withthebowpointingupwards.Youcandragasmallcirclearoundtheshiptoindicatewherethe
torpedowillbecomingfrom.Anegativenumbermeansyou'reoffthetargetship'sportside(the
targetship'sbowisfacingtheleftinyourperiscope).Apositivenumbermeansyou'reonthe
starboardside(thetargetship'sbowisfacingtherightinyourperiscope).
