POWER

Harnessing the Miraculous Energies
of a Small Group to Heal Others,
Your Life and the World
Lynne McTaggart
The miracles in fact are a retelling in small letters of the very
same story which is written across the whole world in letters too
large for some of us to see.

For many years, I refused to write this book because I didnt believe
for one moment the strange healings that were happening in my
workshops; which is to say, I had a hard time handling miracles.
By miracles and healings I am not being metaphoric: I am
referring to genuine loaves-and-fishes-type miraculous events a
series of extraordinary and untoward situations in which people were
instantly healed of all sorts of physical conditions after being assembled
into a small group and sent a collective healing thought. I am talking
about the kinds of miracles that defy every last belief we hold about the
way we are told the world is supposed to work.
The idea of placing people into small groups of about eight started
out as a crazy whim of mine during a workshop I ran in 2008, just
to see what would happen if group members tried to heal one of
their group through their collective thoughts. Id billed them Power
of Eight groups, but I may as well have called them Power of Eight
Million, so potent did they turn out to be and so much did they rattle
everything I thought I knew about the nature of human beings.
As a writer, I am drawn to lifes great mysteries and biggest questions
the meaning of consciousness, the extrasensory experience, life after

then launched the book, kicked off the first experiment two months
later, and took a deep breath.
As it turned out, the experiments did work. In fact, they really
worked. In the 30 experiments Ive run to date, 26 have evidenced
measurable, mostly significant change, and three of the four without
a positive result simply had technical issues. To put these results in
perspective, almost no drug produced by the pharmaceutical industry
can lay claim to that level of positive effect.
It was a year after I began the global experiments with groups of
thousands that I decided to try to scale down the entire process in my
workshops by creating Power of Eight groups and having them send
healing intention. For me it was just another, more informal experiment,
and just as foolhardy a one until it too began to work in ways that
eclipsed everything Id imagined would happen, and people with long-
standing conditions reported instant, near-miraculous healings.
The Intention Experiment caught the public imagination. Bestselling
author Dan Brown even featured me and my work in one of his books,
The Lost Symbol. But the results of the experiments themselves are only
part of the story. In fact, they arent the important part of the story.
For most of the time I was running these experiments and Power of
Eight groups, I now realize, I was asking the wrong questions.
The most important questions had more to do with the process
itself, and what it suggested about the nature of consciousness, our
extraordinary human capacity, and the power of the collective.
The outcome of both the groups and the experiments, amazing
though they were, paled in comparison to what was happening to the
participants. The most powerful effect of group intention an effect
overlooked by virtually every popular book on the subject was on the
intenders themselves.
At some point I began to acknowledge that the group-intention
experience itself was causing big changes in people: changing individual
consciousness, removing a sense of separation and individuality, and

Communal
I was sitting at my computer with my husband, Bryan, one
afternoon in late April 2008, both of us trying to figure out how we
might scale down the large Intention Experiments Id been running for
the workshops we planned to hold in the United States and London
the following summer.
It was a year after Id launched the big global Intention Experiments,
inviting readers from around the world to send an intention to a well-
controlled target set up in the laboratory of one of the scientists whod
agreed to work with me. Wed run about four of them by that time,
sending intention to simple targets like seeds and plants, and recorded
some remarkably encouraging results.
Now I was trying to scale down these effects to something personal
for people, something that would fit well in a weekend workshop, but I
hadnt run many workshops before, and all I knew at the time was what
I didnt want, which was to pretend that I could help people manifest
miracles, as many similar workshops on intention were being billed. I
was also preoccupied by the natural limitations of a workshop setting.

had altered so much that shed had to move the rearview mirror in her
mothers car to accommodate her new, straightened posture.
And Paul in Miami, whose tendonitis in his left hand was so bad
that hed had to have a brace on it at all times, until he was the target
of a Power of Eight group, and stood in front of the audience the next
day, showing how he could now move it perfectly.
There was Diane, with such pain in her hip from scoliosis that
shed had to stop working out and had lost an inch in height over
the previous year. During the intention shed felt intense heat and a
rapid-fire, twitching response in her back. The next day, she declared,
Its like I have a new hip. And Gloria, who felt as though she were
being stretched and elongated on both sides of her core during the
intention for her, after which the constant pain in her lumbar spine
was completely gone.
And Daniel, from Madrid, with an unusual condition that
interfered with his bodys ability to process vitaminD, so much so
that his spine had developed a severe forward curvature, limiting
his capacity to breathe. During the intention, his back felt sore, his
hips felt heat, and his extremities cold. He felt an increase in pain,
a sensation of his back stretching, as though it were growing. For a
moment it felt like it were about to break. After the intention, Daniel
said he was able to breathe normally for the first time in years, and his
posture was notably straighter.
There were hundreds, even thousands, more, and each time I was
standing there, watching these changes unfold right in front of me. I
should have felt good about these amazing transformations, but at the
time I mainly viewed them as a liability. I believed they were going to
undermine my credibility in what I saw as my real work: the large-
scale global experiments.
Which is why, for many years, I ignored what was happening. As
any journalist would tell you, I buried the lede of the story. I didnt fully
appreciate what people like Rosa had been trying to tell me about the

moment when her group sent her intention for her underactive thyroid:
I felt an opening in a tunnel and connecting with the universe. And
if I received this I would be able to heal. It felt like I was giving and
receiving healing, like I was healing myself.
