Qualifications to progress to industry training (IT)

Students must have:
A GPA of at least 70% (pass)
No less than 85% classroom attendance
Possess at least 70 PA points.
Anyone not attaining these averages is considered to be unprepared for Swiss industry training.

Choice of industry training

Industry training is an integral part of any BHMS program. To qualify for an Award, all students
must complete a period of four to six month industry training in Switzerland or abroad. To assist
in this important part of a students education, BHMS will assign each qualified student a
position deemed suitable in relation to his past demonstrated performance as well as his/her
perceived capabilities and behaviour.
If a student does not wish to perform an industry training in Switzerland or is unable to find a
suitable position on their own within three weeks after the end of the school term, the student
will then have to depart Switzerland for the duration of their industry training period, as the
purpose of their stay in Switzerland would have expired. The school will de-register the student
for the period of this industry training and the student may have to re-apply at the Swiss embassy
in their home country for a re-entry visa to Switzerland. Should a student not find an Industry
Training position before the start of the new semester, they may continue the next school term or
re-take failed subjects by paying full fees for the next term.
Should a student be offered an industry training position other than what was offered by BHMS,
the student should supply an initial offer to the IT Placement Officer at least 8 weeks prior to
their IT period. If an agency has helped the student find such a venue, the student is responsible
for any costs incurred by the third party. If BHMS finds that the employer selected by the student
is not suitable for a BHMS IT training venue, the school will not approve the contract and
incurred fees will not be refunded to the student.
Contracts protect the interests of students and any contract must be pre-approved by the
Industry Training Officer.

Duration
Industry training (IT) is mandatory for all students who have met the above qualifying criteria,
and who do not have equivalent prior hospitality experience required to achieve their award. The
industry training period must be the same as the length of full-time studies and therefore lasts a
minimum of four months but a maximum of six months including all statutory holidays. Industry
training must be completed in the time set out by the academic program enrolled in. Students are
not on the open labour market, but rather under supervision of the Industry Training Department
of BHMS.
IT cannot be done in advance of studies. All contracts, whether arranged by the school, the
student or a third party, are subject to Foreign Police and BHMS approval. The school will place
a student in a position the school feels is suitable, one time and one time only..
In all cases of a change in internship deemed to be caused by the student, an administrative
charge of CHF 500.00 will be applied.

2
Problems during industry training
If a student is unhappy or having problems with his/her employer, he/she should immediately
inform the Industry Training Officer at BHMS before making any decision. In any case, the
student MUST inform the IT Officer of any intent to terminate or cancel his work status prior to
acting, otherwise BHMS will deem that the student has chosen to discontinue his/her academic
program and will want to depart Switzerland.
Students agree to terminate their BHMS studies in the event of chronic illness or psychological
difficulties or when expecting to become a parent, both of which will hinder the completion of
studies and employment. The student further agrees to inform either the IT Officer, Resident
Manager or the Academic Dean of any psychological difficulties or of the expectation of a child.

Refusal of industry training

If a student refuses an Industry Training position provided by the school the following rules
apply:
Industry training can be performed only in the six months following immediately after the
students last school term.
If a student refuses an offer negotiated by the school for an IT position, or does anything that
would endanger such placement either by his/her own actions/behaviour, or unwillingness to
participate in this process, the student will be required to sign a declination letter.
The responsibility of the school to assist in any way whatsoever to obtain an Industry Training
position anywhere ends from the date the declination letter is signed.

Change of industry training position

In extenuating circumstances only, BHMS may consider offering a second placement or a
student may find their own alternative position, but this is not guaranteed.
In all cases of a change in internship deemed to be caused by the student, an administrative
charge of CHF 500.00 will be applied.
Students found changing their industry-training venue without the consent of the school are
deemed to be working illegally and will be suspended and de-registered with immediate effect.

Checkout
Checkout time for departure to industry training is in the first week of each term break. This
allows the school to prepare the vacated rooms for new and returning students. Students are
asked to obtain, complete and return a check out form to the Front Office and at least 2 days
prior to the planned checkout date
If a student wishes to continue to live in school, they will have to re-register at school as a tenant
costing CHF 60.00 for room and board per day/night. The accommodation fee has to be paid
each day in advance and this entitles them for only one night accommodation and the meals
available during that day in school. Checkout time is at noon.

Delayed start or early completion

Some adjustments for early start or departure may be made through the IT Officer. However,
should a student start industry training late or stop early for any reason, the time lost cannot be
carried forward into the next semester/s. Industry training is an integral part (50%) of the

3
Academic program and must be completed within the 12 month duration of each program year.
No additional IT time is allowed for extra terms required, to complete academic credits.

Starting Industry Training

Important: It is the trainees responsibility to ensure that his/her employer has received the
necessary work permit issued by the corresponding authorities of the particular Canton
BEFORE starting their industry training. Should students be caught entering their industry
training position early, they will be facing legal consequences. School cannot be held responsible
for any surcharges or penalty fees issued by the authorities.

Accommodation during industry training

Students starting their industry training late are responsible for their own room and board, from
the checkout date onward. In exceptional cases, the school can provide emergency
accommodation & food at CHF 60 per day for individual students whose industry training start
date is delayed. This amount can be paid in cash for each day delayed.

Health Insurance
During their IT, students will be covered by health insurance as well as workman compensation
coverage. There will be a CHF 100.00 deductible fee required to be paid by the student for all
Medical Cases over a period of 12 months (Golden Care). Recurring treatment will not require a
new deductible payment. This coverage is valid throughout Switzerland. Workmans Comp
Insurance is paid 100% by the employer.

Return visits to school

During industry training, students normally live in accommodation provided by their employer
and will not be accommodated in the school. However, students working in the Luzern area may
have the option to rent BHMS accommodation for the duration of their IT, subject to availability.
Such enquiries should be made to the Resident manager.
During days off students can, if they wish, rent room and board with the school, if available
and for CHF 60 per day, or pay for meal tickets if only attending the restaurant. A cash payment
to the Front Office will be required in both cases.

Illegal working
Students found working illegally are contravening Swiss law and school rules. Students will be
fined by the local police and their residency permit will not be renewed when due. That means
they will never receive a second student visa for re-entry to Switzerland.

4
Dear Student
Soon you are about to start your Industry training. For some it is the beginning of their career
and for others improving of their skills.

The training is a learning process, which is no different than going every day to class. Like both
it is your own responsibility to give 100% in completing everything successfully.

This work represents 50% (time wise) of your program. It is therefore necessary that you gain as
much experience as possible and retain it for the future.

You will be required to carefully record what you did in industry training. You will then at the
end be required to make a brief presentation of your IT experience that should include the diary,
new insights, your employers Reference Letter (Zeugnis), a menu or a recipe folder if you are a
culinary student.

During your second training period you will be asked to continue with your diary, menu and /or
recipes folders. Furthermore, you will write a project related to your IT. This document will be
reviewed, assessed and graded by either Chef Wernli and/or the service instructor together with
Mr. Nissim Ben-Aharon.

Student responsibilities during IT:

1. Make sure school receives a copy of the working-approval from immigration within
the first month of IT. (Stellenantritt)
2. Inform school about absence from work. (Health certificate is required)

This mark represents IT part of your final grade. (24 credits)
