Investigating the Space

Scientists have gathered a lot of information about the universe. They have
used their observation to develop a theory called the big bang. The theory states
that about 13.7 billion years ago, all the matter in the universe was concentrated
into a single incredibly tiny point. This began to enlarge rapidly in a hot explosion,
and it is still expanding today. After the big bang the universe assumed the form of
huge clouds. These clouds of gases and dust formed stars. Very large group of stars,
nebulae, gases, dust and planets are called galaxies. A galaxy may contain billion
of stars. Our solar system is the part of the Milky Way galaxy. Scientists classify
galaxies in three main types based on shape. Elliptical, Spiral, and irregular.
Irregular galaxies are not very common. A constellation is a group of stars with a
definite pattern or arrangement. Each constellation has a different pattern. Each
constellation is found in a certain place in the sky. The big dipper is a famous
constellation. Others are Cassiopeia, Leo. We are having very beautiful sky but due
to human development now streets are enlighten by sparkling street lights but these
lights have made it difficult to see the night sky clearly this is called light pollution.

Ozone Depletion and its Effects

Ozone is present throughout the atmosphere. But its

maximum concentration called ozone layer lies in
stratosphere about 25 to 30 km away from the earth
surface. This layer surrounds the globe and protects earth
like a shield from harmful radiation of sunlight.
Otherwise ultraviolet radiations cause different problems.
Thus ozone layer in stratosphere is beneficial for life on
earth.
One group of gases is particularly likely to damage the
ozone layer. These gases are called CFCs (Chloro-Fluoro-
Carbons). CFCs are used in some spray cans to force the
contents out of the can. They are also used in refrigerators, air
conditioning systems and some fire extinguishers. They are
used because they are not poisonous and do not catch fire.
Scientists have discovered that the ozone hole over Antarctica
started in 1979, and that the ozone layer generally started to
get thin in the early 1980s.

Solid Waste
Waste is also known as rubbish, trash, refuse, garbage, junk, and litter. It is a
pejorative term for unwanted materials. Solid waste can be classified into
different types depending on their source:
a) Household waste is generally classified as municipal waste,
b) Industrial waste as hazardous waste
c) Biomedical waste or hospital waste as infectious waste.
Municipal wastes are more
commonly known as trash or garbage
consist of everyday items we use and
then throw away, such as product
packaging, furniture, clothing, bottles,
food scraps, newspapers, appliances,
and waste from streets. This garbage is
generated mainly from residential and
commercial complexes. With rising
urbanization and change in lifestyle
and food habits, the amount of municipal
solid waste has been increasing rapidly.
Industrial waste is considered hazardous
as they may contain toxic substances.
Hazardous wastes could be highly toxic to
humans, animals, and plants; are corrosive,
highly inflammable, or explosive; and react
when exposed to certain things e.g. gases.

Hospital waste is generated during the

diagnosis or treatment of human beings or
animals or in research activities in these fields.
It may include wastes like sharps, soiled waste,
disposables, anatomical waste, cultures,
discarded medicines, chemical wastes, etc.
These are in the form of disposable syringes,
swabs, bandages, body fluids, human excreta,
etc. This waste is highly infectious and can be a
serious threat to human health if not managed
in a scientific and discriminate manner.

Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the major issues of today. It is define as a change of

composition of air by the addition of harmful substances (e.g. industrial and
automobile gases and particulate matter). The harmful substances present in air
are called air pollutants. Even a beneficial substance beyond a specific
concentration may be harmful. Air pollutant changes the weather, badly affects the
human health, damage the plants and destroy buildings. All sources of air pollution
are related to human activities.

Major air pollutants are classified as primary pollutants and secondary

pollutants. Primary pollutants are the wastes or exhaust products driven out
because of combustion of fossil fuels and organic matters. These are oxides of
sulphur (SO2, SO3) carbon (CO2, CO) nitrogen (especially nitric oxide)
,hydrocarbons(CH4) ammonia and compounds of fluorine.

Secondary pollutants are produced by various reactions of primary

pollutants. These are sulphuric acid, nitric acid etc.

Effects Of Acid Rain

Acidic gases (SO2, NO2) are produced when fossil fuels like coal and oil are burned
in power stations, factories and in our own homes. Most of these acid gases are
blown into the sky, and when they mix with the clouds it can cause rain or snow, fog
or hail to become more acidic.
Acid rain with pH range 3-6 has harmful effects. It destroys the necessary
nutrients present in water of rivers and lakes. It lower the pH of water and most of
the aquatic life cannot survive at this pH. Metallic surfaces exposed to this rain are
easily corroded. Building materials such as
calcium carbonate present in marble are
weakened with acid rain because of the formation
of soluble compounds. Acidic rain is dangerous
for historical monuments. The building of famous
Taj Mahal has been corroded at many places due
to acid rain. This rain increases the acidity of soil.
Many crops and plants cannot grow properly in
such soil.
