Summary

Sun radiation has potential as unlimited renewable energy, but until now it still difficult
and expensive to obtain and to store the energy. But, we can utilize plant which can capturing the
energy from sun and storing it. Plants using system called photosynthesis to storing the radiation.
This ability of plant make plant has so much potential to be a renewable energy to fix the problem
of scarcity of fossil fuels. Based on a article in Nature, Professor D. O. Hall proposed four method
to make biomass as a renewable energy source.
The first methods to make biomass as a renewable energy is integrating traditional methods
with a new technology. Before the fossil fuels is discovered, the mankind used to utilize plant to
make traditional fuels such as wood, charcoal and agricultural leftover as a source of energy. As
the population grows, this resource is decreasing which also create second energy crisis and now
plant is only used as a food. But with integrating it with a new technology system, traditional
methods can replacing the fossil fuels. The second methods is producing steam from wood-fuel.
The gained steam from 9100 hectare wood can be used to generate 75 MW electricity. The third
method is using certain crops to produce oil as a liquid fuels. Not only certain crops, but also
farming residues can also be used to produce oil. And the last, liquid fuels-alcohol also can be
obtained from fermentation techniques. Ethanol and methanol is an example of alcohol that can be
obtained from plants such as sugar cane and also from coal, sewage and waste products.
So, the biomass has so much potential to replace the limited fossil fuels. And using biomass
will also increase the experiment to researching and developing biomass so this is such an
opportunity to scientist, engineers and administrators in one field supply.
