CHANGING AN UNOCCUPIED BED

EQUIPMENT:
Two large sheets
Cloth drawsheets
One blanket
One bespread
Waterproof drawsheet or waterproof pads
Pillowcases
Pillows
Portable linen hamper, if available

1. Wash hands

2. Place the fresh linen on the clients chair or overbed


table; do not use another clients bed.

3. Loosen all bedding, starting at the head of the bed,


moving down the bed, working around the foot, and moving
up to the other side of the head.

4. Remove the pillow cases, and place the pillows on the


bedside chair near the foot of the bed.

5. Remove spread and blanket. If they are to be reused,


fold them and place on the chair.

6. Remove the waterproof pad.

7. Roll all soiled linen inside the bottom sheet, hold it away
from your uniform, and place it directly in the linen hamper.

8. Place the folded bottom sheet with its center fold on the
center of the bed. Spread the sheet out over the mattress,
and allow a sufficient amount of sheet at the top to tuck
under the mattress.

9. Miter the sheet at the top corner on the near side, and
tuck the sheet under the mattress, working from the head
of the bed to the foot.

10. Place waterproof sheet over the bottom sheet so that


the center fold is at the center line of the bed and the top
and bottom edges will extend from the middle of the clients
back to the area of the mid thigh or knee. Fanfold the
uppermost half of the folded drawsheet at the center or far
edge of the bed, and tuck in the near edge.

11. Lay the cloth drawsheet over the waterproof sheet in


the same manner described above.

12, Place the top linen on the bed, hemside up, unfold
them, tuck them in, and miter the bottom corners.

13. Move to the other side of the bed. Pull linen toward you
and straighten out linen.
14. Tuck in the bottom sheet under the head of the
mattress, pull the sheet firmly, and miter the corner of the
sheet.

15. Straighten out waterproof sheet and cloth drawsheet.


Tuck sheets under bottom sheet.

16. Straighten out top sheet. Tuck sheet at the foot part.

17. Miter corners at the foot of the bed.

18. Make a small pleat to allow room for patients feet.


(vertical or horizontal)

19. Fanfold top linen to foot of bed.

20. Change pillowcase

21. Return bed to lowest position.

22. If the unit is unassigned, leave top linen pulled up,


covering the bed.

23. Dispose of soiled laundry.

24. Wash your hands.

1. Wash hands.

2. Place the fresh linen on the clients chair or overbed table; do


not use another clients bed.

3. Remove call signal from linens.

4. Adjust the bed to a comfortable working height with side rails


up. Help patient into a supine position.

5. Lower side rail on your side of the bed but make sure side rail
on opposite side is in UP position.

6. Loosen linens at the foot of the bed, and remove the spread
and the blanket.

7. Leave the top sheet over the client.

8. Assist the client to turn on the side where the clean linen is.
Raise the side rail nearest the client.

9. Fanfold the cloth drawsheet, waterproof pad and bottom linen


toward the center of the bed.

10. Place the new bottom sheet on the bed, and vertically fanfold
the half to be used under the soiled linens.

11. Miter bottom sheet at head and foot of bed. Tuck the sides of
the sheet under mattress.

12. Place clean waterproof pad, fanfold the half to be used under
the soiled linens.

13. Tuck waterproof near side edge under the side of the
mattress.

14. Place the clean cloth drawsheet on the bed, fanfold the half to
be used under the soiled linen, and tuck near side edge under the
side of the mattress.

15. Log roll client over onto side facing you.

16. Move the pillow to the clean side of the bed for clients use.
Raise side rail.

17. Move to the other side of the bed, and lower the side rail.
18. Remove the used linen, and place it in the portable hamper.

19. Unfold bottom sheet, use both hands to pull, miter at head
and foot part and tuck the sides of the sheet under the mattress.

20. Unfold the waterproof pad, pull it tightly with both hands and
tuck in.

21. Unfold the cloth drawsheet, pull it tightly with both hands and
tuck in.

22. Reposition the pillows at the center of the bed.

23. Assist the client to the center of the bed.

24. Spread the top sheet over the client, and ask the client to hold
the top edge of the sheet or tuck it under shoulders. Leave a 6
inch cuff of top sheet at the head of the bed.

25. Remove bath blanket and straighten top sheet.

26. Miter corners at foot of bed.

27. Pull up all layers of linen at patients toes. Make a small pleat
to allow room for patients feet.

28. Remove pillow from bed and change pillowcase

29. Return bed to lowest position. Reattach call signal to linens.

30. Dispose of soiled laundry.

31. Wash hands.

FOLDING A MITERED CORNER

EQUIPMENT:
Same as for Unoccupied Bed

STEPS YES NO

1. Tuck sheet tightly and smoothly under mattress at top of the


bed.

2. Grasp edge of sheet with hand and bring sheet onto mattress
so that edge forms a right angle.

3. Tuck lower edge of sheet under mattress.

4. Place finger on sheet where it meets mattress and lower top of


sheet over finger.

5. Remove finger without disturbing folds.

6. Tuck sheet securely under mattress.

CHANGING A PILLOWCASE

EQUIPMENT:
Clean pillowcase

STEPS YES YES

1. Pick up center of closed end of pillowcase.

2. Continue to firmly grip end of pillowcase; then with other hand


gather pillowcase from open end and fold back over closed end.

3. Pick up center of one end of pillow with the hand holding the
gathered pillowcase.

4. Pull pillowcase over pillow with other hand. Do not place pillow
and / or case under arm, chin, or in teeth.

5. Adjust pillow corners in pillowcase by placing hand between


case and pillow.
