Lesson(s): Risk Taking & Decision Making

Top 30 x 30: Values Assignment

As young adults, you have important life decisions to start making, most of which are
impacted by parents or teachers or societal values and expectations. They are big
enough and important enough to be a part of, but it is difficult to do if you havent had a
chance to practice the skills or clarify your own values. They also require a bit of risk-
taking and falling down, the likes of which many of us havent seen since we were a
baby. Remember learning how to walk probably not but each of us in this room at
one point was crawling around on our hands and knees before we learned to be bipedal.
And we didnt just get up one day and start walking, we clambered on the couch, the
wall, our parents legswe lurched, we stumbled, we fellover and over again. But for
some reason we kept on trying, we kept on getting up, and finally we stood on our own
two feet for the first time. You are at the same juncture but with more at stake.

So our task today is to get clear on whats important to us, and to think about and plan
to take some risks, so we are better prepared to make the big decisions coming our
way. Previously, we viewed three movie clips (with supporting quotes and poems)

The Dead Poets Society with Robin Williams

o This is your life and it is ending one minute at a time Narrator,
Fight Club
Shawshank Redemption with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman
o We do not choose to be born, by Joseph Epstein
Rudy
o Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed.
Michael Pritchard

All three films talk about making choices to live an exceptional life. Long before the
bucket list came into play, there were two men who met each other on their birthdays
to celebrate their successes. By the time they were about 25, and had the wife, the
house and the 2.3 kids, the job they realized that they were kind of bored. Is this all
there is they asked???? Are there no more exciting, challenging things to look forward
to in life?

Right there they decided to make a list of 50 things to do by the time they were 50 that
could have nothing to do with financial gain, family or career. Their list had to push
them to take risks, to try something new, to get out of their comfort zone. By the time
they were 30 they had accomplished half of them by the time they were 40, they had
completed all of them and had to start again. By the time that they knew it, they had
made their life more fulfilling, more exceptional, more intentional than before.

The task before you today is to create your very own visual-based 30 x 30 list that you
will be asked to present to me. Those slightly more daring, those willing to take the
risk, are strongly encouraged to present their final product to our class.
