The Serious Student of History

Philippine history is one arena in which we must

struggle to free our minds so that we may at last
act in our best interests. But the task of
reexamining our past will not be easy since to a
greater or lesser extent we are all captives of
colonial scholarship. A nationalist viewpoint is
therefore an indispensable prerequisite to the
attainment of a liberating history; it must
constitute the ideological framework to which
we must all adhere. Nationalism endows the
serious student of history with a definite point
of view. THIS POINT OF VIEW IMMEDIATELY
ALERTS HIM TO ANY KIND OF DISTORTION
WHICH WOULD SERIOUSLY AFFECT HIS
APPRAISAL OF BASIC PROBLEMS AND MIGHT
PRODUCE MISCONCEPTIONS THAT MERELY
SERVE THE PURPOSES OF COLONIAL POWERS
AND RULING GROUPS.-----RENATO
CONSTANTINO-iNSIGHT AND FORESIGNT

n INDEPENDENT NATION Which rejects foreign

dictation, depends on itself, thinks for itself, and
decides for itself what the common good is, how
it is to be attained, and how its costs and
benefits are to be distributed.
An HONORABLE NATION where public powers
are used for the public good and not for the
private gain of some Filipinos and some
foreigners; where leaders speak not only well
but truthfully and act honestly; a nation that is
itself and seeks to live in peace and brotherhood
with all other nations of the world--- 1984 JOSE

The Filipino Graduate

Mere professional skill is not sufficient for the
Filipino graduate; his heart must burn with the
patriotic ardor of our heroes, if he wants to help
build and strengthen the Filipino nation. The
Filipino graduate must foster in our masses of
pride of country and a firm faith in our great
destiny as a nation. How can those graduates,
who have so little knowledge of our past, open
for our people a vision of our future?-- Dr. Jorge
Bocobo

Working with Head, Heart and Arms

The principal thing that is required of a Filipino
is not to be a literary person, but to be a good
man, good citizen who helps with his head, his
heart and perhaps with his arms the progress of
the country. With the head and heart we could
and ought to work always, with the arms when
the time comes.
--Jose Rizal

Finally, there is a need of taking a much deeper

interest in the History of our country and of a
stronger determination to correct the grave
falsehoods written concerning our people.... We
should have more Filipino writers who have not
been fascinated by foreign historians whose
opinion on the virtues of the Filipino people is
degrading our nation---Dr. Jorge Bocobo

" You must be better than a good

communicator--you must be a translator of
dreams, a demonstrator of passion for pursuing
the dream..." R.G. Director, Office of HCR
You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if
you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity,
he will continue the learning process as long as
he lives.

rief History of Philippine Mass Communication

To understand Philippine mass media at present,
one has to look at them in the light of history.
They have roots that go back to the countrys
colonial past. For example, the first book,
Doctrina Cristiana, was printed in the
Philippines in 1553, just over a century after
Johann Gutenberg introduce printing with
movable types in Europe, in 1425. It may be
interesting to note that the first book in the
United States was not printed until after 1638.

So over the years have been seeing western

books in our schools. Even our mass
communicators have been reading mostly
American or English books in communication.
And so western cultrual imperialism has
extended even to our mass media. As a member
of the board directors of the Philippine
Association of Communication Educators (PACE)
many years ago. I remember how we talked
fervently about the need for Filipino textbooks in
communication and I remember how no one did
anything about it, until now.--The foreword of
former Senator Orly Mercado on the book of Dr.
Crispin Maslogs Philippine Communication
Today

Philippines as a developing country in the South

East Asia is still on its process of urbanization
and industrialization, were life became more
complicated. As the population expanded, the
job of communicationINg in a massive scale
became more complex. A system of delivering
infromation to many people at the same time
became necessary and so mass communication
was born. (Maslog,2007)
