DISCUSSION

When the term of solids in terms of water quality is discussed, the two terms that
related are suspended and dissolved. The term solids is generally used to refer to any
material suspended or dissolved in water as well as wastewater that physically isolated either
through filtration or through evaporation. (Delong,2004)

In this experiment, total solids dried (TSD), total suspended solids (TSS) and total
dissolved solids (TDS) had been determined by using different sample from different sources.
The aim of this experiment was to determine the total solid dried, total suspended solid and
total dissolved solid in a wastewater sample. The sample was namely V132 which is the
sample from the UniKL MICET pond, V133 from an agriculture pond in Kendong area and
the sample from Kendong drain, V134.

Firstly, total solid dried of the wastewater samples were determined at temperature
1030C to 1050C. A well mixed of each of 25 ml of the samples were evaporated in a weighed
dish and dried to constant weight in an oven 1030C to 1050C. After an hour, the dried residue
was weighed from each of the samples. Based on the results above, the total dried solids for
sample V132 is 0.0163 mg/L after 2 hours being dried, V133 is 0.0025 mg/L after 2 hours
while sample V134 is 0.0028 mg/L after 2 hours being dried in the oven. The total solids was
represent when there is increasing in weight over that empty dish. Based on the data that had
been collected, shows that sample V132 which is the sample from the UniKL MICET pond
contain higher amount of dried residue compared to sample V133 and V134 which is the
sample from agriculture pond and drain in Kendong. The sources of the total solids may
come from organics sources such as microorganisms, decaying plants and animals since the
pond had not be clean and take care off for a long time. The high level of total solids may
impact the health of the stream and the organisms that live in the pond. The clarity of the
water also decreases and makes the water less aesthetically pleasing.

Secondly, total suspended solid was conducted at temperature 1030C to 1050C. Total
suspended solids gives a measure to the turbidity of the water and it is the portion of the total
solids that are retained on a filter paper. The weighed filter paper is placed in a filtering
apparatus and a suction pump is applied. 50ml of samples is passed through the filter. The
filter that contained residue was then dried in an oven for one hour at 1030C to 1050C. The
sample then cooled and weighed. Based on the data that had been collected, shows that the
results for sample V132 was 0.000026mg/L, sample V133 was 0.000038mg/L while sample
V134 was 0.000202mg/L of total suspended solids. This shows that sample V134, sample
from Kendongs drain contain higher numbers of suspended solid compare to sample V133,
sample from an algriculture pond in Kendong followed by sample labelled V132, sample
from the UniKL MICET pond. As stated in Environmental Business Specialists, the high
total suspended solid values in effluent was often related to excessive solids generation due to
an increase in Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) loading or can indicate problems with
the bacteria like nutrient deficiency. This suspended solids, then affect the clarity of the water
in which the water turn muddy due to the light scattering from very small particles present in
the water. This can be seen on the colour of each of the water samples in which sample V134
(Kendongs drain) more darker compared to sample V133 and V132. A high total suspended
solid values also impute to high flows because of some of the zones were filled with solids
and this affect the flow of Kendongs drain.

Last experiment were the determination of total dissolved solids (TDS) dried at
1800C. Total dissolved solids (TDS) can be defined as comprising inorganic salts and small
amounts of organic matter that are dissolved in water. The total dissolved solids (TDS) are
the solids that presence in the filtrate from the total suspended solids (TSS) test. The liquid or
the sample that passes through the a standard glass fiber filter is collected. 25ml of filtrate of
the samples was evaporated to dryness in a weighed dish and dried to constant weight at
1800C. The dish is then re-weighed to see the difference between the dish weight before and
after filling with filtrate and drying. The weigh showed an increasing in which this
represented the dissolved solids. Based on the data collected, the results show that the total
dissolved solid of sample labelled V132 is higher which was 0.0163 mg/L compared to
sample V134 which is the total dissolved solids was 0.0041 mg/L and followed by sample
V133 which is 0.0031 mg/L of total dissolved solids. The high number of total dissolves
solids of sample that took from the filtrate of sample V132-UniKL MICET pond shows that
the water contain much inorganic and organic substances. Ions and ionic compounds that
make up total dissolved solids included carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, fluoride, sulfate,
phosphate, nitrate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium whereas the organic ions
include pollutants, herbicides, and hydrocarbon. The frequent cloudy water problems,
frequent bouts of algae, and the presence of scale and stains on tile of the pond shows the
signs of a high TDS level in the water. So, the result was acceptable.
CONCLUSION

This experiment were conducted to determine total solids dried (TSD), total
suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS) from different sources of water
samples. The samples of this experiment were taken from UniKL MICET pond (V132),
agriculture pond in Kendong (V133) and also Kendong drain (V134). In TDS, sample V132
has the highest amount of total dried solid followed by sample V134 and then sample V133.
The amount of TDS in V132 highest were might be due to organic sources such as
microorganism and decaying plant. Second experiment was to determine the total suspended
solid because it gives a measure to the turbidity of water and it is the portion of the total
solids that are retained on a filter paper. Result shows that V134 has the highest mount of
total suspended solid which were 0.000202mg/L followed by V133 and then V132. As stated
in Environmental Business Specialists, the high total suspended solid values in effluent was
often related to excessive solids generation due to an increase in Biochemical Oxygen
Demand (BOD) loading or can indicate problems with the bacteria like nutrient deficiency.
The suspended solid can affect the clarity of the water and turn the water to muddy and this
can be proven because water sample V134 was darker than V133 and V132. Last experiment
was to determine total dissolve solid. This experiment was correlation from the second
experiment because the water sample used was the filtrate from the second experiment (TSS).
Based on the data that have been collected, water sample labelled V132 has the highest value
for total dissolve solid compared to V133 and V134. Comparing the result from experiment
TSS and TDS, it can be said that sample V134 has the highest amount of suspended solid but
less amount of dissolve solid but sample V132 has the highest amount total dissolve solid but
lowest amount total suspended solid because mostly all the solid in the sample has dissolved.
The frequent cloudy water problems, frequent bouts of algae, and the presence of scale and
stains on tile of the pond shows the signs of a high TDS level in the water. As a conclusion,
the objectives of the experiment were achived.
