Case I. Allergic Rhinitis

1. Learning objectives:

1.1. Compare and contrast available agents used to treat allergic rhinitis with respect to
efficacy and safety

1.2. Develop a safe and effective therapeutic regimen for the management of allergic
rhinitis based on disease severity

1.3. Develop a prescription for the patients and evaluate or monitor or terminate or
modify the therapy.

Scenario:

Ana is a 19-year- old woman who presents to her physician with complaint of upper
respiratory sympatoms. The symptoms have occurred off and on since she was child,
worsening in the rainy seasons, however, they have been continues for the last 3
months. Additionally, she has developed itchy, watery eyes that did not occur with
rhinitis symptoms she had in the past. She has not run a fever and does not have throat
pain, but she does have an occasional nonproductive cough that gets worse at night.

2. Question:

2.1. What drug, dosage form, dose, schedule, and duration of therapy are best for this
patients?

2.2. What is the Single firstgeneration antihistamin, second-generation antihistamine,


and intranasal corticosteroid? Immunotheraphy?

2.3. What alternatives would be appropriate if the initial therapy fails? CAM?

Case II. Infection

1. Learning objectives:

1.1. Compare and contrast available agents used to treat Pneumonia with respect to
efficacy and safety

1.2. Develop a safe and effective therapeutic regimen for the management of Pneumonia
based on disease severity

1.3. Develop a prescription for the patients and evaluate or terminate or modify the
therapy

Scenario

A 25 year old woman who has previously had excellent health is admitted under your care
with a 7 day history of malaise, feverishness and cough. She has pleuritic pain in her lef
axilla. Her temperature is 38,50C. You find an area of dullness in the lef axilla with bronchisl
breath sounds. She is uncomfortable but able to joke with you examine her. She has no
known allergies and you think that the diagnosis is Pneumonia.

2. Question:

2.1. What antibiotics, dosage form, dose, schedule, and duration of therapy are best for
this patients?

2.2. What is the appropriate drugs if she is a pregnant patient. Justify your selection of
pharmacologic agents based on their efficacy and safety profiles.
