Rabbis Greetings

O ne of the greatest challenges Orthodoxy faces
is to remain relevant and vibrant yet authentic and
loyal to our roots. How do we involve ourselves in
that which is ancient and not become antiquated?
The answer to striking this balance is found within a
familiar phrase from our tefilot , renew
our days as of old.

A new year brings new beginnings at KCT. A brand

new calendar of educational and social programs as well as a newly invigorated youth program headed
up by Rebecca and Yehuda Bromberg. With gratitude to Hashem we proudly welcome our Sephardic
Rabbi, Rabbi Netanel Isaacs along with his wife Sarah and family as they herald in a new and exciting
era for KCT. At the same time we will double our efforts this year to renew and improve upon the past.
We dont replace in Judaism, we reinforce and strengthen that which we have been doing for years with
a fresh perspective and renewed vigor.

Our programming will revolve largely around this theme. KCT hopes to reignite that spark with Torah
study, with a goal of providing a variety of opportunities to allow 100% of our membership to be engaged
in some form of Torah study during the week, be it chavruta study or shiurim. We continue to expand
our tefila offerings with more minyanim and greater participation than ever before. You will find that our
social gatherings are geared towards a wider audience with more creative and fun-filled opportunities.
We will explore Jewish life, from practical kashrut, to the esoteric. This year we pay attention to truly
engaging those who have most recently become a part of our tzibur, while at the same time, helping
those of us who have been here for many years feel as excited and remain as engaged as ever.

I hope you will take advantage of our shuls vast and incredible
opportunities to engage in this spiritual renaissance together.

Sincerely,
Rabbi Shaanan Gelman

The KCT Sephardic Minyan is a synagogue where Sephardim from various
ethnicities and backgrounds can come together to honor and observe their
traditions and customs with a traditional Sephardic minyan, while still being a
part of the larger Skokie Jewish community. Adam Soleymani

I n the 20th century the Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities

were vastly separated. With each community trying to retain their
own rich culture and tradition, a town containing both traditions was
unheard of. Only in the 21st Century did Asheknazic and Sephardic
Jewry unite in one land as they landed on the shores of the United
States and Israel. As American Jews, we grew up being exposed to
both traditions and cultures throughout our communities and schools,
but we have yet united to embrace each other under one roof. We at
Kehilat Chovevai Tzion have created a cultural environment that hasnt
existed since Maamad Har Sinai. One shul that encompasses both Ashkenaz and Sephardic
tradition side by side is truly a revolutionary concept and can serve as a beacon of hope for the
future of the Jewish nation. By stepping out of our comfort zone and uniting two very diverse
cultures into one entity, we are strengthening our Jewish values. We are reminding the world how
klal yisrael stood by Har Sinai, . We are renewing the love and acceptance of all
Jews as it once was. May Hakadosh Boruch Hu reward us by renewing our days like
the old. - .

Wishing you an amazing year!

Sincerely,
Rabbi Netanel Isaacs

in the capacity of Assistant Rabbi for the congregation at large. Please join us in providing a warm welcome to

RENEW

Renew through Song...

Yosef Kardunor
in Concert
Presented by KCT in partnership
with ICJS and Isralink
Sunday, October 22, 2017

Sit back and take in the soothing

and uplifting Jewish music with
the one and only Yosef Kardunor.
The Maharal of Prague once said
that the word shir comes from
the word , the remnants
of the heart. True music does not begin with the lips, it begins deep down on the inside. It is
not enough to listen to something pleasant with your ears. We ought to allow the holy words
and sweet melodies enter our soul. Yosef Kardunor is not an entertainer; he is teacher. His
songs are not background music they are exalted prayers.

Renew Your Soul...
Ahavat HaGer
Featuring Rabbi Dr. Dovid Fox &
Harav Yona Reiss, Av Beth Din of
the CRC
Sunday, April 22, 2018

The Sages teach us that when

a person converts it is as if they
become a newly born soul.
Anytime a new person enters
a group there is an inevitable
learning curve. All the more so
when the newcomer has gone
through such a comprehensive and profound transition. The challenge of integration is not
one that the Ger should confront alone. It is one that the rest of the congregation needs to
contemplate and address. Join the Chicago Rabbinical Council for a truly unique and much
needed educational gathering. This will be a multidisciplinary workshop on the role of the
community, practical halachic challenges and integration into our social networks.

The Womans Balcony
December 2, 2017

New York Times & Los Angeles Times CRITICS PICK!

Israels #1 Film of the Year!

An accident during a bar mitzvah celebration leads to a gender rift

in a devout Orthodox community in Jerusalem, in this rousing, good-
hearted tale about women speaking truth to patriarchal power.

When the womens balcony in an Orthodox synagogue collapses,

leaving the rabbis wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock, the
congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears
to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his
fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the womens
friendships and creates an almost Lysistrata-type rift between the
communitys women and men.

The Wedding Plan

February 3, 2018

At 32, Michal (Noa Kooler), an Orthodox Jewish woman, is finally

looking forward to the comfort and security of marriage, when she is
blindsided by her fiancs decision to call off the wedding with only a
months notice. Unwilling to return to lonely single life, Michal decides
to put her trust in fate and continue with her wedding plans, believing
Mr. Right will appear by her chosen date. Confident she will find a
match made in heaven, she books a venue, sends out invitations and
buys a wedding dress, as her skeptical mother and sister look on with
trepidation. During Michals month-long search for a spouse, she enlists
the help of two different matchmakers, goes on a series of disastrous
blind dates and finds an unexpected connection with a charming but
utterly unsuitable pop star (Oz Zehavi) - all while dismissing pleas by
concerned friends and family members that she reconsider her risky
plan. As the day of the ceremony grows closer and no suitor appears,
Michal puts everything on the line to find happiness.

A Green Chariot
March 17, 2018

Set in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, A Green Chariot is a drama about

identity, belonging and romance. Yair (Vitali Freedland), a twenty-
year-old Russian immigrant, yearns for acceptance as an Israeli, so
he disconnects himself from his father and his secular Russian friends,
finds a modern Orthodox girlfriend, and joins a religious/nationalist
youth movement, Bnei Akiva. But on the eve of his wedding to Dafna
(Daniela Wirzer), his world is upended and his new life is jeopardized.
Rummaging through a package sent by his aunt, Yair, known in
Russian as Sasha, discovers a crucifix. His father assures him that
his late mother was thoroughly Jewish, but admits that his maternal
grandmother was a Christian. For Yair, who has adopted Orthodoxy
and is engaged to be married to an Orthodox woman, the revelation
could unravel everything.

Fannys Journey
July 22, 2018, Tisha Baav

Based on a true story, FANNYS JOURNEY is an incredible tale of

bravery, strength and survival, a story of a daring young girl who
will stop at nothing and fear no one. In 1943, 13-year old Fanny
and her younger sisters were sent from their home in France to an
Italian foster home for Jewish children. When the Nazis arrive in Italy,
their caretakers desperately organize the departure of the children
to Switzerland. When they are suddenly left on their own, these 11
children do the impossible and reach the Swiss border to freedom.
