STP Plant Manufacturers Explain Equalization Tank And Its

Functions

Sewage treatment plants are constructed with several critical components, which
play significance role in the sewage treatment process. There is bar screen
chamber, aeration tank, oil grease grit trap, equalization tank, and more. Packaged
STP manufacturers explain the use and functions of equalization tank in a typical
STP Plant process.

A well-running STP has primary benefits, such as-

Assured availability of water for several secondary purposes

Big savings in fresh water costing
Enhanced public health
Lesser environmental degradation

A STP has to manage the certain sewage quantity and deliver satisfactory quality
of treated water. For this, manufacturers prepare proper design and perform
engineering practices; followed by precise operation and maintenance throughout
its life.
A lot of variations are made in the design and engineering of an STP since there
are permutations and combos of developers/constructors, architects, vendors, etc.

Lets now learn the concept of equalization tank. We will discuss its functions and
operation to make you understand better.

The sewage from the bar screen chamber and oil, grease and grit trap enters the
equalization tank. This tank is the first collection tank in a sewage treatment plant.
It acts like a buffer that gathers the incoming raw sewage that comes at extremely
fluctuating rates. The tank passes the sewage on to the rest of the STP at an
average flow rate.

The equalization tank stores the sewage, and lets it out when there is no or little
incoming sewage.

The design criteria:

Since the diurnal variation in the sewage quality is not critical, the equalization
tank is only meant for buffering the routine fluctuations in the sewage flow
quantity. The tank must be of sufficient capacity to collect and hold the peak time
inflow quantity.

The incoming line of the sewer is generally gravity-fed, and is likely to be at

significant depth below the level of ground. Thus, it is important for
manufacturers not to make the equalization tank of STP deeper as it will require
deeper excavations and costly construction. It is important to force compressed air
in the sewage stored in the tank. It is required and must for following reasons-

It keeps the raw sewage aerated; less chance of septicity and odor
generation.
It keeps solid in suspension and prevents settling them in the tank; lower the
frequency of manual cleaning.
