Physics SI units
the study of the universe, from the sub-atomic (basic to Physics 211)
scale to the full size of the universe
a science based on experiment (measurement)
meter (m): unit of length
fundamental units:
Mass: kilogram (SI), slug (English) kilogram (kg): unit of mass
Length: meter (SI), foot (English)
Time: second (SI and English) second (s): unit of time
Current (E&M): Ampere (SI)
Kelvin (K): unit of temperature
The Meter
In 1792 the meter was defined to be one ten-millionth of the
Old meter
A distance from the north pole to the equator.
Earth
AB
1 m
C 107
For practical reasons the meter was later defined as the
Equator B distance between two fine lines on a standard meter bar
made of platinum-iridium.
Since 1983 the meter is defined as the length traveled by
light in vacuum during the time interval of 1/299792458 of
a second. The reason why this definition was adapted was
that the measurement of time had become extremely precise.
The speed of light is defined to be 299 792 458 m/s.

MASS
Units
SI kilogram, kg
Defined in terms of a kilogram, based on a specific cylinder kept
at the International Bureau of Standards
The meter is now defined to be the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second
in a vacuum. Distance traveled is speed multiplied by time.

New Standards Coming in 2018 The units for length, mass, and time (as well
as a few others), are regarded as base SI
units.
Number Notation
When writing out numbers with many digits,
spacing in groups of three should be used.
No commas
Standard international notation
